Representative Cynthia McKinney Watch: Black Minister Calls for McKinney Prosecution by United States Attorney

Rep. Cynthia McKinney, D-Ga., gives a thumb-up during a news conference in Atlanta, Monday, April 3, 2006. Black clergy and lawmakers came the defense of McKinney during the news conference. Capitol Hill police have referred a scuffle between one of their officers and McKinney to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington.

CCN: Black Minister Calls for Prosecution of Cynthia McKinney

On March 29, Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) struck a police officer who attempted to stop her when she entered a House office building without proper identification. According to witnesses, McKinney three times ignored Capitol Police orders to stop at a security checkpoint. Rep. McKinney later held a press conference with her attorney and supporters where she accused the Capitol Police of “racism” and of “racially profiling” her. Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND (Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny) issued the following statement regarding this matter:

“This situation is an example of a black liberal Democrat using allegations of racism in order to get away with breaking the law. It’s disgraceful that Cynthia McKinney would charge the Capitol Police with racism for trying to do their jobs. Charges of ‘racism’ and ‘racial profiling’ by McKinney and her attorney are code words often used to intimidate white Americans and get black racists off the hook.

McKinney could have easily defused this situation by apologizing for not having proper identification and for attacking the officer; instead, she held a press conference flanked by known racists such as Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover, and members of the NAACP. The real racists here are Cynthia McKinney and her racially divisive supporters. The U.S. Attorney’s office must vigorously pursue this case regardless of the race, gender, or position of the person involved, in order to send a clear message that this type of racial demagoguery will not thwart justice.”

Rep. Cynthia McKinney, right, D-Ga., is greeted with a kiss by Georgia state Rep. Tyrone Brooks, D-Atlanta, as she was about to address the media at a news conference in Atlanta, Monday, April 3, 2006. Black clergy and lawmakers came the defense of McKinney during the news conference. Capitol Hill police have referred a scuffle between one of their officers and McKinney to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington.

In the meantime two members of the House are introducing a resolution supporting the Capitol police.

Washington Times: Resolution to commend Capitol Police

Two House members will introduce tomorrow a resolution to commend the U.S. Capitol Police department, which Rep. Cynthia A. McKinney accused last week of racial profiling.

“The 1,700 officers of the Capitol Police force risk their lives every day protecting constituents, staff and members of Congress,” said Rep. Patrick T. McHenry, North Carolina Republican. “The right thing to do is to commend these men and women. They deserve a pat on the back, which is more appropriate than what they’ve gotten lately.”

The resolution, by Mr. McHenry and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, Florida Republican, which could be voted on this week, comes after increasingly harsh accusations by Mrs. McKinney, the Georgia Democrat who was stopped by Capitol Police last week for bypassing a metal detector.

And….. are the Democrats distancing themselves from McKinney?

The Hill: McKinney is distraction, say the Dems

“There’s been a lot of eye-rolling,” said an aide to a moderate Democrat who spoke on condition of anonymity. “The national attention it’s been getting has been unfortunate. It’s becoming a distraction.”

A Democratic strategist concurred.

“This isn’t the view of Democrats that we want to project in the tough races, one of victims and race-baiting,” the strategist said.

An arrest warrant today?
