AFP: UN must take action on Iran: Rice

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that the UN Security Council “has to act” in response to Iran’s failure to allay international concerns over its nuclear plans.

The United States believes… that in order to be credible the security council of course has to act,” she told reporters on the sidelines of talks with her NATO counterparts in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

“I would certainly hope the Security Council is prepared to take some action,” she said, adding that “it is highly unlikely that Iran will accede to the demands of the international community.”

But Rice played down talk of military action against the Islamic republic, saying: “I have been talking with my colleagues around the world concerning a diplomatic agenda with Iran. We are committed to a diplomatic course.”

Measured responses from the United States and when the IAEA report is released…….
