Washington Post: Can Giuliani Overcome Abortion Stand?

Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani may be able to overcome his support for abortion rights with primary voters who oppose abortion, GOP lawmakers said Sunday.

“I think it’s an uphill fight on that issue,” House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said. “But I think a lot of Republican voters see Rudy Giuliani as competent and able to do the job.”

Rep. Tom Tancredo, agreed it is possible for Giuliani to win the nomination.

“Because one of the things that happens, of course, is that Republicans start looking at alternatives and saying, `Oh my gosh, even if Mayor Giuliani is a pro-choice, or at least a flip-flop, candidate on this issue, maybe he will appoint strict constructionists and that sort of thing,” Tancredo said.

“And God knows we don’t want the alternative, being whoever the Democrats have in place,” Tancredo said.

Boehner was on “Fox News Sunday,” while Tancredo appeared on “This Week” on ABC.

The fact is the Mayor’s position on abortion and federal funding of abortion has been so miscontrued/twisted/spun that no voter absolutely understands the Mayor’s position. And Hizzonder did not help himself out this week in the debate by saying:

In a GOP debate last week, Giuliani said “it would be OK” if the Supreme Court upholds Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision legalizing abortion. “It would be OK to repeal it. It would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as precedent,” Giuliani said.

What the Mayor was attempting to say in a nutshell was that the issue of Roe v. Wade and abortion is for the Supreme Court to decide not the President.

However, as President he feels the issue/choice of abortion is best left between the woman and her doctor within certain restrictions as determined by each state.

Moreover, he supports the Hyde amendment which limits federal funding for abortion.

He opposes partial birth abortion and the recent ruling of the Supreme Court limiting/outlawing it.

Also, the Mayor should have emphasized that he has NO litmus tests on the issue of abortion for new appointments to the Supreme Court.

Can Rudy be nominated by the GOP with a pro-choice position on abortion?

The answer is YES and others in the GOP agree, if he adequately states his mainstream position on this issue.

Rudy can’t overcome his pro-abortion stance unless he can provide more than one reason for Republicans to choose him. He had two: 9/11 and “I can beat Hillary”. He is now tied with Hillary, and the debate made it clear he is not the only strong defense candidate. IT may take some time, but Rudy is sinking.

Matt being a Mormon supporter of Mitt Romney I can understand why you want Rudy to sink in the polls.

However, Rudy in the latest polls may be tied with Hillary but all of the other GOP candidates lose to her, including Mitt Romney who loses by what, 22 % pts?

Nice try to plant a story.

Now, be a good Romney boy and get over to Real Celar politics and look at the polls: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/national.html

And tell Flap why do you use a web page relocator for your pro-Romney blog?
