Dentistry Today: Grapefruit ‘May CUT Gum Disease’

BBC New has Grapefruit ‘may cut gum disease’

Eating grapefruit could help fight gum disease, a study suggests.

Researchers found people with gum disease who ate two grapefruits a day for a fortnight showed significantly less bleeding from the gums.

They believe this is due to an increase in blood levels of vitamin C, known to promote wound healing and cut damage by unstable free radical molecules.

The research, by Friedrich Schiller University in Germany, is published in the British Dental Journal.

The study of 58 people with chronic gum disease found that eating grapefruits had a positive effect on both smokers and non-smokers.

Smoking is known to increase the risk of gum disease.

It is probably the vitamin C in the grapefruit that is helping.

    But…….

Quitting smoking would most likely have a more propitious effect

    and…..

proper diet, good dental hygiene, and regular professional dentl care will have much more profound long-lasting effects.

Gas Attack at Russian Store: A Result of Cutthroat Capitalism?

People sickened after of a gas attack at a store of the Maksidom home-supplies chain, get medical care in hospital in St. Petersburg, Monday, Dec. 26, 2005. A gas attack on a Russian chain store sickened more than 70 people Monday, and boxes with glass vials attached to wires were found in three other outlets of the same store, authorities said. Police said they believed a commercial dispute or blackmail attempt was behind the incidents, and Russian news agencies quoted the city’s top official as saying that authorities had ruled out terrorism.

The ASSociated Press has Gas Attack at Russia Store Sickens Dozens

A gas attack in a home-supply store on one of the busiest shopping days of the year sickened scores of people Monday in an incident that police called likely motivated by a commercial dispute or blackmail attempt. Boxes containing timers wired to glass vials were discovered at the scene of the attack and three other stores in the same chain in Russia’s second-largest city.

Seventy-eight people sought medical care: 66 were briefly hospitalized and sent home without any lasting ill effects, officials said. Police said that the store where the people were sickened had not yet opened for the day and all those affected were store employees or police, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

A police spokesman told The Associated Press that some customers had been sickened.

Officials with the Maksidom home-supply chain, which sells furnishings, home-repair material and other domestic articles, said they had received recent threats that sales would be disrupted around New Year’s, when Russians traditionally give holiday gifts.

Most efforts to undermine competitors’ sales in Russia’s sharp-elbowed free market take the form of negative advertising or damaging rumors. Business-related violence nonetheless remains a feature of the cutthroat capitalism that enveloped Russia following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

How about the failure of the rule of law in Russia?

Something to keep in mind when it is reported that Russians are selling missle and nuclear technology to Iran and North Korea.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: Graz Removes Schwarzenegger’s Name from Stadium

    Before

    AND……..

    After name change

Reuters has Graz removes Schwarzenegger’s name from stadium

Californian Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Austrian home town of Graz removed his name from the city’s stadium over Christmas, amid anger over his decision to deny clemency to a death row inmate.

Austrian news agency APA showed the stadium’s entrance displaying only its historical name, “Graz-Liebenau,” and quoted an anonymous city official as saying Schwarzenegger’s name had been removed overnight to avoid a public furor.

Graz city officials were not reachable on Monday, a holiday in Austria.

Left-wing politicians launched a petition drive in Graz to have the town rename the stadium because the Austrian-born governor allowed the execution of death-row inmate Stanley Tookie Williams this month.

Well, Governor Schwarzenegger received this belated Christmas present from the Austrian socialists who are against the death penalty.

While conservative mayor Siegfried Nagl opposed renaming the stadium, a city council majority of social democrats, communists and greens supported it. That prospect prompted Schwarzenegger to turn the tables and withdraw his name himself.

On December 19, Schwarzenegger demanded Graz stop using his name on the stadium and in promotions and returned a “ring of honor” he had been awarded by city officials in 1999, saying politicians in his hometown appeared to have rejected him.

Schwarzenegger, a former body building champion and Hollywood star, trained at the stadium as a young man. It was renamed in his honor in 1997.

Here we have immature and juvenile behavior both in the U.S. and Austria.

The Governor and Graz City Council should have better issues upon which to dwell.
