Michael Angelo Morales Watch: United States Supreme Court Refuses to Halt Morales Execution

San Francisco Chronicle: High court won’t halt execution

The U.S. Supreme Court this afternoon refused to halt the execution of condemned murderer Michael Morales, shooting down the 46-year-old’s last chance to escape a death planned for 12:01 a.m. Tuesday at San Quentin State Prison.

Justice Anthony Kennedy reviewed Morales’ case and sent it to the full court, which denied the prisoner’s final appeal at 6:29 p.m. EST, a U.S. Supreme Court spokesman said.

None of the justices commented further in the decision.

The ruling came after the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco on Sunday denied his request to put off his death by lethal injection. The Ninth Circuit ruled that an anesthesiologist who will be in the death chamber to monitor Morales’ consciousness — as ordered last week by a lower court — can and will ensure he feels no pain when the drugs seeking to paralyze him and stop his heart begin to flow.

The United States Supreme Court has denied Morale’s last judicial appeal. But, Kenneth Starr, the Dean of the Pepperdine School of Law, Malibu, has again filed a clemency request for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

With his execution just hours away, one of Morales’ attorneys, former Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth Starr, pleaded for California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to grant clemency.

Schwarzenegger has already denied clemency to Morales, and it is not unusual for inmates to ask again as their execution looms. Starr, as in his first petition for clemency, noted that the trial judge in Morales’ case had urged Schwarzenegger to show mercy.

Starr said that the 13 times in which that happened in California’s history, the presiding governor granted a reprieve.

“Overriding such opinions,” Starr wrote, “is not only tantamount to thumbing one’s nose at the well-reasoned decision of the trial judge, it shows what will reasonably be viewed as disrespect for our system of government and our respective roles in that great and enduring system.”

A Schwarzenegger spokesman said the governor would respond soon.

Well, it looks ike the “BIG JAB” for Morales at midnight – barring a last minute grant of clemency by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Flap handicaps Schwarzenegger thumbs his nose at Dean Kenneth Starr and former Ventura County Judge Charles McGrath.

islamcartoonfeb20afghanista0fl Muhammad Caricature Watch: Afghan Students If They Abuse the Prophet of Islam Again We Will All Become Al QaedaAfghan protesters hold up a burnt effigy of U.S. President George W. Bush during a demonstration against cartoon drawings of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, east of Kabul Monday, Feb. 20, 2006. About 2,000 students burned Danish and U.S. flags as well as photos of President Bush during a peaceful protest in Afghanistan on Monday against the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, officials said.

Reuters: Afghan cartoon protesters threaten to join al Qaeda

Hundreds of Afghan students shouted support on Monday for Osama bin Laden and threatened to join al Qaeda during a protest against cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

The protest in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad passed off without violence. Students gathered at the university campus chanted “Death to Denmark”, “Death to America” and “Death to France”, a witness said.

They also shouted support for al Qaeda leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahri.

Shouting “Death to Karzai”, they demanded President Hamid Karzai close the embassies of Denmark, the United States and France and expel their forces from Afghanistan.

“If they abuse the Prophet of Islam again we will all become al Qaeda,” the students shouted.

Two weeks ago in Afghanistan, at least 10 people were killed in several days of protests over the cartoons but violent demonstrations there have largely petered out.

What a surprise – more Taliban protesting America……

Are the protest organizers becoming more tansparent?

Yup!

irvingfeb20web8yy Holocaust Watch: Holocaust Denier Sentenced to Three Years in PrisonRight-wing British historian David Irving holds his book ‘Hitler’s War’ when arriving at a court in Vienna, on Monday, Feb. 20, 2006. Irving is accused of denying the Holocaust and is facing up to 10 years in jail. He has been in custody since his arrest in November on charges stemming from two speeches he gave in Austria in 1989 in which he was accused of denying the Nazis’ extermination of 6 million Jews.

ASSociated Press: Holocaust Denier Gets Three Years

Right-wing British historian David Irving pleaded guilty Monday to denying the Holocaust and was sentenced to three years in prison, even after conceding he wrongly said there were no Nazi gas chambers at the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Irving, handcuffed and wearing a navy blue suit, arrived in court carrying a copy of one of his most controversial books — “Hitler’s War,” which challenges the extent of the Holocaust.

“I made a mistake when I said there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz,” Irving told the court before his sentencing, at which he faced up to 10 years in prison.

He also expressed sorrow “for all the innocent people who died during the Second World War.”

But he insisted he never wrote a book about the Holocaust, which he called “just a fragment of my area of interest.”

“In no way did I deny the killings of millions of people by the Nazis,” testified Irving, who has written nearly 30 books.

Irving’s lawyer immediately announced he would appeal the sentence.

Now you know why the American Founders wrote the First Amendment to the United States Constitution……

But, what about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

islamcartoonfeb20iranweb6gh Muhammad Caricature Watch: Islamic Radicals Call for More ProtestsIranian female students attend a demonstration over the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad outside the Danish embassy in Tehran, on Monday Feb. 20, 2006.

ASSociated Press: Islamic Radicals Call for More Protests

Radical Islamic leaders on Monday called for more rallies against the Prophet Muhammad cartoons in Pakistan as lawmakers disrupted a session of Parliament, protesting sweeping arrests before a banned demonstration over the weekend.

The rowdy opposition legislators forced the lower house of parliament, or National Assembly, to adjourn indefinitely after they stood up and chanted anti-government slogans. They also demanded a debate about the roundup of hundreds of Islamic hard-liners before Sunday’s protest in the capital, Islamabad.

More disruption by the Islamic radical clerics in Pakistan. The pattern of protest is apparent – control of the government.

One of those detained was Qazi Hussain Ahmed, a leader of a six-party coalition of radical Islamic parties, called Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), or United Action Forum.

The MMA sympathizes with the former Taliban regime in Afghanistan and is fiercely anti-U.S.

Authorities held Ahmed and others because they feared the coalition’s rally would become violent like others have in the past week. Despite the leaders’ detention, protesters clashed with police for about three hours on Sunday.

After Ahmed was freed from house detention late Sunday he traveled to the capital Islamabad on Monday for a meeting with senior leaders in the alliance.

Ahmed and Maulana Fazlur Rahman, a lawmaker from the coalition and opposition leader in the parliament, jointly announced that a series of new rallies against the cartoons and the government would be held.

A new series of rallies by anti-American, pro-Taliban, pro-AlQaeda radicals.

How surprising……..

More than caraicatures or cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad?

You betcha……

Stay tuned……..

irannukefeb20web3ku Iran Nuclear Watch: Russia Hosts Iranians to Discuss Uranium EnrichmentThe head of the Iranian delegation, a deputy head of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Hosseinitash (L) arrives in Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport early on February 20, 2006. Iranian and Russian officials meet in Moscow on Monday to discuss a compromise deal that may be the last chance to defuse the row over Tehran’s nuclear programme before Western governments seek sanctions.

Reuters: Russia hosts Iranians for talks on nuclear row

Iranian and Russian officials meet in Moscow on Monday to discuss a compromise deal that may be a last chance to defuse the row over Tehran’s nuclear program before Western governments seek sanctions.

Moscow is offering to enrich the uranium Iran needs for nuclear power stations on Russian soil, an arrangement that would help ease international concerns Tehran could divert the material for bomb-making.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made clear he did not expect much from the Moscow talks, but promised President Vladimir Putin that he would try and make best of them.

“Frankly speaking, we feel reserved about the possible outcome of talks,” Itar-Tass news agency quoted Lavrov as saying at a regular meeting with the Russian leader.

“But we will make every effort not to allow the situation to get worse or to evolve into the use of force,” he said.

Russia wants Tehran to reinstate a moratorium on uranium enrichment before creating a joint venture to supply Iran with fuel for power stations — which would not be enriched highly enough for making an atomic bomb.

“We intend to urge our Iranian colleagues strongly to resume the nuclear moratorium,” Itar-Tass news agency quoted an unnamed senior foreign ministry official as saying ahead of the talks.

But the head of the Iranian delegation that arrived earlier on Monday, Ali Hosseinitash, made clear he was not ready for a major compromise.

“Our talks with Russian officials are not conditional,” Iranian television quoted Hosseinitash, a deputy head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, as saying. “We will not step back one inch from our obvious right (to nuclear technology).”

YAWN….another face saving attempt by the Russians for a business ( nuclear reactor building) customer.

Just another STALL and absolutely NOTHING will come of these meetings.

“The sides will discuss mainly technical issues like the number of participants in the project and venues for enriching uranium,” Russian daily newspaper Gazeta said. “All these are important issues, but not the ones of top priority.”

Gazeta said Russia was pinning its hopes on a visit to Iran later this week by Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia’s nuclear agency, Rosatom.

The ball continues in the Mullah’s court and the clock for Iran regime changes continues to tick tick tick……..
