Cox & Forkum: Dicey
Cox & Forkum: Dicey
This cartoon was inspired by a Robert Tracinski comment in yesterday’s TIA Daily:
Over the weekend, Condoleezza Rice rejected a bogus Iranian offer for international inspections, saying that the Iranians are “playing games.” They sure are, but they’re playing the game we started: the charade of trying to establish the basis for war by going through a United Nations Security Council that is sympathetic to dictatorships and hostile to the US.This is the same charade we played before the invasion of Iraq, and as with that game, the slowdown will only help our enemies, while carrying the real risk that the US will cleverly box itself into a diplomatic corner, permanently stalling our efforts to stop Iran.
Meanwhile: Iran Discovers New Uranium Deposits, Continues Enrichment Program.
Iran said Tuesday it had found uranium ore at three new sites in the center of the country, an announcement that appeared designed as a fresh challenge to the drive by the United States and allies to curb Tehran’s nuclear program.Iran already has considerable uranium resources available for its nuclear program, a fact that called into question the importance of the new discoveries — beyond their propaganda value.
“We have got good news: the discovery of new economically viable deposits of uranium in central Iran,” Mohammad Ghannadi, deputy chief for nuclear research and technology, told a conference.

Iran Nuclear Watch: John Bolton – United States to Form Anti-Iran Coalition if UN Rejects Sanctions
US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton testifies before the House Government Reform Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. The United States is ready to form a coalition of countries to take sanctions against Iran if the UN Security Council does not agree measures, Bolton said.
AFP: US to form anti-Iran coalition if UN rejects sanctions: envoy
The United States is ready to form a coalition of countries to take sanctions against Iran if the UN Security Council does not agree measures, the US ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, said.
Bolton told a Congress committee that the United States and its allies would press ahead with a first UN Security Council resolution condemning Iran even if Russia and China abstain.
He added that if one of the permanent members of the Security Council vetoed a later measure ordering sanctions, the United States would seek alternative ways to punish Iran.
“If we were faced with a veto by one of the permanent members, if for whatever reason the council couldn’t fulfill its responsibilities, then I think it would be incumbent on us, and I’m sure we would press ahead to ask other countries or other groups of countries to impose those sanctions,” Bolton said.
Like Flap said the first time.
The ambassador said Iran had been “very effective at applying their oil and natural gas resources to apply leverage against countries to protect themselves” from international pressure.
He said the United States and its allies were preparing a resolution this week under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter “which will make mandatory on Iran all of the existing IAEA resolutions calling on it to suspend its uranium enrichment program and so on.”
Chapter 7 allows for economic sanctions and eventually military strikes. But the first resolution is not expected to threaten sanctions.
The United States, Britain, France and Germany believe the Iranian program hides an attempt to build a nuclear weapon.
“While it would be desirable to have a unanimous Security Council when we adopt this resolution … it’s not impossible that we would proceed without them (China and Russia)”, Bolton told US lawmakers.
“And if they abstain, then that resolution will go into effect, as would subsequent sanctions resolutions if we get to that point.”
Would Russia and China WIMP out and betray their economic partner, Iran?
Stay tuned…….

Illegal Immigration Watch: After May 1 Protests – So Now What?
Anti-protester Sheila Myers stands with a small group of people shouting at cars and holding up signs on the corner of Florida and Kirby in the city of Hemet.
Los Angeles Times: Next: Converting the Energy of Protest to Political Clout
They’ve rallied, they’ve marched, they’ve boycotted.
So now what?
In the aftermath of Monday’s “Day Without Immigrants,” the urgent question immigrants and their supporters face is how to translate the passion of the streets into lasting political gains.
In coming months, immigrant rights organizers say, they will shift their energy into making a difference at the polls through registering voters, helping legal immigrants become citizens and getting out the vote in June primary elections around the nation.
“This is only the beginning,” said Hilda Delgado of Local 1877 of the Service Employees International Union in Los Angeles. “Now we have to reroute all of the energy and momentum and start registering to vote to send a clear message [for immigration reform] to the Senate and House in Washington.”
Organizers have their work cut out for them. According to the Pew Hispanic Center, only 39% of the nation’s 41 million Latinos are eligible to vote, compared with 76% of whites and 65% of blacks. And fewer than half of the 16 million eligible Latino voters voted in the 2004 general election.

Iran Nuclear Watch: Revolutionary Guards Rear Admiral Mohammad-Ebrahim Dehqani – Iran WILL Target Israel
Two Iranian students perform as President Bush and Britain’s Prime Minister Tony Blair while standing under the portraits of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (L) and Iran’s Late Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini during a nuclear exhibition at Bahman Cultural complex in Tehran, May 2, 2006.
Reuters: Iran will hit Israel if US does “evil”: agency
Iran will target Israel first if the United States does anything “evil”, a senior commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards said on Tuesday.
The United States says it wants Iran’s nuclear standoff with the West solved diplomatically but has refused to rule out military action.
“We have announced that wherever America does something evil, the first place that we target will be Israel,” Revolutionary Guards Rear Admiral Mohammad-Ebrahim Dehqani was quoted as saying by Iran’s student news agency ISNA.
The Islamic Republic has never recognized Israel and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for the Jewish state to be “wiped off the map.”
Dehqani said naval wargames held in the Gulf last month “carried the warning to those countries that threaten Iran, including America and the Zionist regime”.
Experts said the wargames, in which Iran said it had tested new missiles and torpedoes, were a thinly veiled threat that it could disrupt vital Gulf oil shipping lanes if it was attacked.
An Iranian woman visits a nuclear exhibition at Bahman Cultural complex in Tehran May 2, 2006Of course, most war planners have mentioned this scenario. It is OBVIOUS.
But, what Iran must understand….. Israel will drop a nuclear bomb on Tehran if Israeli civilian centers are attacked with chemical tipped Shabab-3 missles.
MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT!
This is the look of Tehran:

Iran Nuclear Watch:Manouchehr Mottaki – Russia and China Oppose United Nations Sanctions and Military Attacks
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (bottom) attends a meeting in Tehran as Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki stands in the background in this April 26, 2006 file photo. Mottaki was quoted on May 2 as saying that Russia and China had officially informed Tehran they would not support sanctions or military action over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear programme.
Reuters:Iran says Russia and China will not back sanctions
Iran’s foreign minister was quoted on Tuesday as saying that Russia and China had officially informed Tehran they would not support sanctions or military action over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
U.N. ambassadors from the United States, Britain and France are expected to introduce a resolution this week to legally oblige Iran to comply with U.N. Security Council demands it halt all uranium enrichment work.
When asked how far Russia and China, veto-wielding permanent members of the council, would support Washington, Manouchehr Mottaki told the Kayhan newspaper:
“The thing these two countries have officially told us and expressed in diplomatic negotiations is their opposition to sanctions and military attacks.”
“At the current juncture, I personally believe no sanctions or anything like that will be on the agenda of the Security Council,” he said in the interview.
So, what is new?
Russia and China will NEVER support sactions against Iran. They both have too many economic/business relationships with the Mullahs.
China and Russia both have big energy interests in Iran, the world’s fourth biggest oil exporter. In 2005, more than 11 percent of China’s crude imports came from Iran. Russia’s LUKOIL is exploring the Anaran oilfield in western Iran.
China is also planning a multi-billion-dollar deal to buy Iranian Liquefied Natural Gas when it comes onstream in return for an upstream stake in a huge southern Iranian oilfield.
Russia has been helping Iran build its first nuclear power station at the southern port of Bushehr, a $1 billion project, and Tehran has said it is keen for foreign firms, particularly Russian, to play a role in building more reactors.
What about the trade relationships between Russia/China and the United States?
Well, they are strained but do not be surprised when the United States works a trade deal to sabotage Russia/China’s Iranian relationship.
Stay tuned…..
