irannukemay3lweb2ae Iran Nuclear Watch: President Bush Iran Should Abandon Their Nuclear Weapon Ambitions

German Chancellor Angela Merkel (L) and US President George W. Bush shake hands as they meet in the Oval Office of the White House for the second time in four months. Merkel said the United States and Germany were in “total agreement” on the need to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, after her meeting at the White House with Bush

Reuters: Bush to Iran: Abandon nuclear weapons aim

President George W. Bush demanded on Wednesday that Iran give up nuclear weapons ambitions “for the sake of world peace,” as he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel emphasized diplomacy in dealing with Tehran.

Bush and Merkel, during an hour of Oval Office talks, said it was important for the international community to stay united in the drive to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

“The Iranians must understand that we won’t fold, that our partnership is strong, that for the sake of world peace, they should abandon their nuclear weapons ambitions,” Bush said.

Merkel, who came to Washington intent on mapping out a strategy for confronting Iran that will not splinter the West as Iraq did three years ago, said she and Bush saw good chances for bringing about a diplomatic solution.

“We are in total agreement saying that under no circumstances must Iran be allowed to come into possession of nuclear weapons,” Merkel said.

More diplomatic double and triple speak. The United Nations will do little if ANYTHING.

But, this is good cover for the later military operations, if Iran does not stand down their uranium enrichment program and permit full inspections of their nuclear facilities.

Stay tuned…..

irannukemay3gweb0ll Iran Nuclear Watch: Britain, France Introduce Iran Resolution

Jean-Marc de La Sabliere, French Ambassador to the United Nations arrives at a closed Security Council consultation on the nuclear program of Iran at United Nations headquarters in New York Wednesday, May, 3, 2006. Britain and France introduced a new resolution on Iran to the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday.

ASSociated Press: Britain, France Introduce Iran Resolution

Britain and France introduced a U.N. Security Council resolution Wednesday that could trigger sanctions against Iran if it does not abandon uranium enrichment.

The resolution has the support of the United States but is opposed by Russia and China.

The Western nations hope the council will adopt the resolution before foreign ministers convene in New York on Monday, the ambassadors of France and the United States said before a Security Council meeting to discuss the issue.

The resolution mandates that Iran “shall suspend all enrichment related and reprocessing activities,” according to the text presented to the council.

The resolution also calls on Iran to stop construction of a heavy-water reactor. It will seek a report back from the U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, on Iran’s compliance.

No timeframe has been set for that report, but diplomats said the Western nations want it completed by early June.

The noose is starting to tighten around Iran’s neck.

But, will they care?

And expect a quick response from Admadinejad.

Stay tuned…….

ASSociated Press: Soda Distributors to End Most School Sales

The nation’s largest beverage distributors have agreed to halt nearly all sales of sodas to public schools — a step that will remove the sugary, caloric drinks from vending machines and cafeterias around the country.

The agreement was announced Wednesday by the William J. Clinton Foundation and will also likely apply to many private and parochial schools.

“This is a bold step forward in the struggle to help 35 million young people lead healthier lives,” former President Clinton said at a news conference. “This one policy can add years and years and years to the lives of a very large number of young people.”

irannukemay3aweb1fn Iran Nuclear Watch: Iran Nuclear Chief Gholamreza Aghazadeh Irans Uranium Enrichment Now 4.8 Per Cent

Iranian technicians explains a piece of equipment to a clergyman during an exhibition of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization at the Qom University in the city of Qom 80 miles (130 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran, Iran, Tuesday, May 2, 2006. Iran has discovered new deposits of uranium and is continuing its nuclear enrichment program despite international protests, a top nuclear official said Tuesday.

ASSociated Press: Iran Uranium at Level to Fuel Reactors

Iran’s nuclear chief said Wednesday that Iran has enriched uranium up to 4.8 percent — the upper end of the range needed to make fuel for reactors — as it continues to defy U.S. and European demands to stop enrichment.
The announcement by nuclear chief Gholamreza Aghazadeh tops Iran’s declaration last month that it had surpassed the 3.6 percent purity level. Uranium enriched to between 3.5 and 5 percent is used to make fuel for reactors to generate electricity.

Enriched to more than 90 percent, it becomes suitable for use in nuclear weapons. Aghazadeh added that Iran has no intention of enriching uranium beyond 5 percent.

But, this is their public uranium enrichment program. And what about the P-2 centrfuges which enrich uranium at a much higher rate?

This announcement serves notice to the West that time to negotiate with Ahmadinejad and the Mullahs is OVER.

International Atomic Energy Agency officials in Vienna, Austria, said they had no information about the claim. The agency — whose inspection powers have been curtailed in recent months by Iran — said in a report sent to the U.N. Security Council on Friday that Iran’s claim to have enriched small amounts to a level of 3.6 percent appeared to be true according to initial analysis of samples it took.

Wednesday’s announcement, if true, is significant because it shows that Iran continues to enrich uranium in defiance of the Security Council, which asked Tehran last month to cease all such activity because of fears it could be misused to make nuclear arms.

European nations, backed by the United States, outlined a planned Security Council resolution in Paris on Tuesday to give “mandatory force” to the atomic watchdog agency’s demands that Iran halt uranium enrichment.

While the resolution does not call for sanctions, that is likely to be the next step sought by the United States, Britain and France if Iran refuses to stop enriching uranium.

Still, Russia and China, veto-wielding permanent members of the Security Council, remained firmly opposed to a resolution that could pave the way for sanctions if Tehran refuses to end uranium enrichment.

The Security Council is scheduled to discuss the Iran nuclear issue on Wednesday.

And it was announced yesterday that Iran has discovered new uranium deposits.

Aghazadeh also said Wednesday that Iran had discovered uranium deposits in southern Iran near the port city of Bandar Abbas, a day after Iranian officials said they had found uranium ore at three new sites in the center of the country.

Aghazadeh, who is also the head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said Iran was planning vast investments to extract uranium from its newly discovered deposits.

“Experts at the (Iran’s) Atomic Energy Organization are making plans to identify the country’s uranium reserves. It is predicted that we will have vast investments in various parts of the country,” he said.

More uranium ore, increasing enrichment and all of this is to generate electricity?

Doubtful……

Stay tuned for the United Nations Security Council meeting later today…….
