kennedycovermay4web2ca Representative Patrick Kennedy Cover-Up Watch: BookM Dano

Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., looks on as during a debate in East Providence, R.I. in this Oct. 15, 2004 file photo. Kennedy crashed his car near the U.S. Capitol early Thursday, but he denied alcohol was a factor. “I was involved in a traffic accident last night at First and C Street SE near the U.S. Capitol,” he said in a written statement released by his office Thursday afternoon. “I will fully cooperate with the Capitol Police in whatever investigation they choose to undertake.”

ASSociated Press: Kennedy Blames Accident on Sleep Medicine

Rep. Patrick Kennedy crashed his car near the Capitol early Thursday, and a police official said he appeared intoxicated. Kennedy said he had taken sleep medication and a prescription anti-nausea drug that can cause drowsiness.

Kennedy, D-R.I., addressed the issue after a spate of news reports. His initial statement said, “I consumed no alcohol prior to the incident.”

Later, however, he issued a longer statement saying the attending physician for Congress had prescribed Phenergan on Tuesday to treat Kennedy’s gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

Kennedy said he returned to his Capitol Hill home on Wednesday evening after a final series of votes in Congress and took “prescribed” amounts of Phenergan and Ambien, another prescribed drug that he occasionally takes to fall asleep.

“Some time around 2:45 a.m., I drove the few blocks to the Capitol Complex believing I needed to vote,” his second statement said. “Apparently, I was disoriented from the medication.”

Kennedy appeared to be intoxicated when he crashed his Ford Mustang into a barrier on Capitol Hill early Thursday morning, said Louis P. Cannon, president of the Washington chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Cannon, who was not there, said the officers involved in the accident were instructed by an official “above the rank of patrolman” to take Kennedy home.

No sobriety tests were conducted at the scene.

Like Father - Like Son.

If he was NOT DRUNK he would have taken a sobriety test.

arpaiojoeweb7ua Illegal Immigration Watch: Arizona Deputies to Seek Illegal Immigrants

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio

ASSociated Press: Ariz. Deputies to Seek Illegal Immigrants

A posse of 100 volunteers and sheriff’s deputies will patrol the Phoenix area and arrest any illegal immigrants, the county sheriff said.

The group likely will be deployed across parts of Maricopa County by the weekend, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Wednesday.

Volunteers will be drawn from the department’s 3,000-member posse, whose members are trained and are often former deputies.

“It’s important to send the message out to stay in Mexico and don’t come roaming around here hoping you’re going to get amnesty,” said Arpaio, who in years past gained notoriety for putting inmates on chain gangs and issuing them striped uniforms and pink underwear.

Arpaio’s deputies have already arrested about 120 illegal immigrants using a new state smuggling law.

“We’re going to arrest any illegal who violates this new law,” he said. “I’m not going to turn these people over to federal authorities so they can have a free ride back to Mexico. I’ll give them a free ride into the county jail.”

Under the law _ as interpreted by the Maricopa County attorney _ illegal immigrants can be arrested and prosecuted for conspiracy to smuggle themselves into the country. The law’s authors have said they intended it to be used to prosecute smugglers, not the immigrants being smuggled.

Lawyers for nearly 50 undocumented immigrants charged with conspiracy to commit human smuggling have filed motions to have the charges dismissed.

A Los Angeles attorney brought into the case last week by the Mexican Consul General’s Office in Phoenix plans to file another motion claiming Maricopa County Attorney officials are violating state and federal law because it’s the federal government’s job to control illegal immigration.

Both motions are to be argued in county court on May 23.

About DAMN time…..

Let’s see if Arizona courts will DARE to reverse these arrests.

Stay tuned……..

School ME! Adventures in Education Watch: No Child is Like a Root Canal

Los Angeles Times: No child is like a root canal

Yes, School Me bashed the LAUSD for pandering to parents this week. That doesn’t mean we’re above a bit of pandering ourselves as we cast about for readers. Hence we pass on this “joke”–we think it’s a joke–that landed in our e-mail. Most of you will find it painful. Teachers, we hope, will offer a toothy smile of gratitude, even though it has probably been making the rounds for years.

Read it all.

Actually, the situation is NOT TOO FUNNY at all.

From Flap’s personal experience as a former LAUSD teacher and a dentist in California for over 28 years both systems (education and dentistry) are doing an equally poor job.

To be blunt…….education and dental health in California SUCKS.

One of the common threads…… children of Hispanic illegal aliens/immigrants.

Ask how Flap knows in comments or over at My Dental Forum.

Solutions anyone? Since the comments section is off at the Los Angeles Times School Me! blog.

ratatouilleweb2qe Dentistry Today: Vegetable Cooking Linked to Tooth Decay

Ratatouille
BBC News: Veg cooking linked to tooth decay

Cooking vegetables in different ways could cut down on tooth decay, scientists have claimed.

Certain methods of cooking them can make vegetables as acidic as fizzy drinks, according to a new study.

Researchers at Dundee’s dental school made the discovery while experimenting with the vegetarian dish ratatouille.

They found that, compared with stewing, oven-roasting significantly increased the acidity of vegetables such as green peppers, aubergines and courgettes.

Dr Graham Chadwick, who led the study, said its findings could be used by dentists when advising patients on ways to fight dental erosion.

The problem is caused by the direct contact of acid with the teeth, which destroys tooth tissues - leading to the need for expensive dental treatment.

Yes and the effects can be quite devastating.

Acidic foods and sugar which bacteria metabolize to acid are to be avoided for a healthy dentition.

The Daily Mail:Roast veggies ‘as bad for teeth as fizzy drinks’

Lead researcher Dr Chadwick said: “The acidity of ratatouille prepared by oven-roasting is the same as that of some carbonated drinks that, when consumed in excess, are believed to contribute to the development of dental erosion.”

However, they found the cooking method had no impact on the acidity of tomatoes or onions.

The Dundee team’s research was based on reports that people on a vegetarian diet may be more at risk from dental erosion because such a large quantity of the foods they eat, such as fruits and vegetables, tend to be quite acidic in nature.

The research is published in the current edition of the European Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.
