Illegal Immigration Watch: California Governor Schwarzenegger – National Guard on the Border “NOT RIGHT WAY TO GO”

***ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION UPDATE***

President Bush will call for thousands of National Guard troops to be deployed along the Mexico border in support of patrols aimed at keeping out illegal immigrants, a White House official said Sunday on the eve of an Oval Office address announcing the plan.

An illegal immigrant crosses the US-Mexico border. President George W. Bush, in a nationally-televised speech on Monday, is expected to propose tougher immigration enforcement measures along US-Mexico border, including the use of additional troops, US media reported.

Los Angeles Daily News: Arnold skeptical of Guard patrols

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has urged Washington to toughen border security, said Friday that he had misgivings about mobilizing state National Guard troops to help secure the nation’s Southern boundary.”Going the direction of the National Guard, I think, is maybe not the right way to go,” Schwarzenegger told reporters after a news conference on the state budget.

But, Governor you continue to criticize the President, federal government (remember you blamed them for the Pinko de Mayo, May Day immigrant protests) and you do NOT want to build a border wall.

So, what do you propose to stem the tide of illegal immigration?

NOTHING!

Arnold bloviates and is part of the problem NOT part of the solution. Schwarzenegger panders to the Minutemen one minute and then to the illegal aliens the next.

Tammy Bruce, a member of the Governor’s transition team weighs into the controversy, Schwarzenegger Has Begun To Officially Blither.

And as someone who served on his Transition Team, let’s just say I’m an indication of the general feeling about him in California. I have to admit, one of the silver linings of the illegal alien debate is that we get to see the real nature of some of these political circus clowns. If Schwarzenegger continues to make statements like this, I’ll begin to think that’s he’s indulging in Uncle Teddy’s flask and Cousin-in-Law Patrick’s “medicine” chest.

Here’s a bit from Schwarzenegger explaining why he doesn’t like the idea of the National Guard being used to secure our borders, a suggestion President Bush is expected to make Monday night (right after the president says over and over again that Americans won’t do difficult work, as he talks about the National Guard, which generally consists of a bunch of young people helping to save the world from Islamist fascist tyranny, a pretty difficult job for not a lot of money. Fascinatingly, the National Guard isn’t manned with a bunch of Mexican illegal aliens. Somehow, inexplicably, we’ve found a bunch of young American citizens to do the job. Go figure.).

From a Drudge flash:

“There is all kinds of talk about now that should we use the National Guard,” Schwarzenegger explains. “I think that the key thing is that we secure our borders. Going the direction of the National Guard, I think is maybe not the right way to go because I think that the Bush administration and the federal government should put up the money to create the kind of protection that the federal government is responsible to provide.”

So Arnie wants troops controlled by and answerable not to him but by the president? There’s a reason why we prohibit the military from engaging in civilian law enforcement operations–because we know what happens when the government gets too big and wants too much. Arnie, the National Guard exists in part so that governors have control of a uniformed force that is part of the community they are asked to engage domestically. Protecting/closing/guarding a state border is a perfect job for the National Guard.

He also noted in his complaint that he thinks after the Iraq war we should let National Guardsmen go back to normal work again. Newsflash for Arnie–not every National Guard soldier is deployed to Iraq. There are actually some who are still here and have not served overseas.

Schwarzenegger’s effort to undermine one of the very few good ideas out there on this issue offered by President Bush also seems like an outrageous move to pander to his wife’s liberal, Bush-hating constituency. His effort to be all things to all people on this issue is also wearing thin.

And Bill Quick over at Daily Pundit, Governor Musclehead Spouts Off

Well, lessee. Governor Musclehead is against using the National Guard (so am I) and he’s against building a fence (I am not). So what does he think is going stop the flood of illegals – muscle magic?

All I can say is thank goodness this guy is constitutionally barred from becoming President. It’s hard to conceive, but he might be an even worse RINO than GWB himself.

The Governor is making it increasing difficult for any Republican to vote for him this November.

RINO is a kind word for Schwarzenegger.
