A member of Mexican immigration group Beta checks the border wall between Mexico and the United States during a patrol in Tijuana, Mexico May 6, 2006. The U.S. Border Patrol said on Wednesday it had arrested 724,613 undocumented migrants crossing the 3,200-km (2,000-mile) border from Mexico since October 1 last year, a rise of 6 percent from the same period a year earlier. The increase comes as U.S. lawmakers debate a proposal by President George W. Bush offering millions of illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, and as Hispanic activists staged protests and a work stoppage in cities nationwide.

ASSociated Press: Senate OKs Border Fence, Mulls Citizenship

The Senate voted to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border Wednesday and clashed over citizenship for millions of men and women who live in the United States illegally.

Amid increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation, senators voted 83-16 to add fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. It marked the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the contentious measure.

The Senate vote on Senator Session’s amendment is here.

A ittle ray of hope before the House-Senate conference negotiations on the final bill.

“Ultimately we all understand where this bill is going to be written. It’s going to be written in the conference committee between the House and the Senate,” said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.

House Republicans remained unyielding in their opposition to legalization.

“Thinly veiled attempts to promote amnesty cannot be tolerated,” said Rep. Tom Price of Georgia. “While America is a nation of immigrants, we are also a nation of laws, and rewarding those who break our laws not only dishonors the hard work of those who came here legally but does nothing to fix our current situation.”

Stay tuned……

Hugh Hewitt: Security First

Michelle Malkin: THE PRICE OF A FENCE

Should be an interesting scene in Washington in about an hour. The illegal alien lobby says it’ll have 100,000 amnesty-demanding activists pounding the pavement. I can’t make it there tonight, but hope to have a few eyewitness reports. Wonder if the MSM will EVER cover these radicalized protests in a fair and balanced way…

Who will be building the fence? Reader Daniel G. imagines the news story:

Ventura County Star: A Ventura County GOP coup?

Rumors abound that there will be a post-primary revolt in the Ventura County Republican Central Committee, with a move afoot to oust five-year party chairwoman Leslie Cornejo as payback for her endorsement of challenger Michael Tenenbaum over 10-term incumbent Elton Gallegly in the 24th Congressional District GOP primary.

The Chairman of the Ventura County Republican Party MUST have the support of the party faithful and the elected members of the party central committee.

By endorsing a candidate against a long-term incumbent and well-liked Congressman is equivalent to sacrilige in GOP politics.

Leslie Cornejo should resign as GOP Ventura County Chairman immediately. If not, then she should be removed at the next regularly scheduled meeting of the county GOP.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gestures during a news conference at the D-8 summit for the group of developing nations in Nusa Dua on the Indonesian island of Bali May 13, 2006. Ahmadinejad on Wednesday ruled out any idea of halting nuclear fuel work in return for EU incentives, saying the Europeans were offering ‘candy for gold’.

ASSociated Press: Iran Rejects Potential European Incentives

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday rejected a possible European offer for incentives, including a light-water nuclear reactor, in return for allaying fears about his country’s nuclear program by giving up uranium enrichment.

“Do you think you are dealing with a 4-year-old child to whom you can give some walnuts and chocolates and get gold from him?” Ahmadinejad told thousands of people in a speech in central Iran.

European nations have weighed adding a light-water reactor to a package of incentives meant to persuade Tehran to permanently give up uranium enrichment — or face the threat of
U.N. Security Council sanctions.

Senior diplomats and EU government officials said Tuesday that the tentative plans were being discussed among France, Britain and Germany as part of a possible package to be presented to representatives of the five permanent U.N. Security Council members and Germany at a meeting in London. All spoke on condition of anonymity because of the confidential nature of the information.

Flap bets that John Bolton and the American delegation to the United Nations are laughing their ASSES off at the APPEASING Europeans.

There are even some FOOLS who think they can ENGAGE Ahadinejad and the Mullahs in constructive diplomatic dialogue.

You don’t need a foreign service degree from Georgetown or Harvard to understand that Iran is STALLING and does NOT want to negotiate ANY reduction in their nuclear ambitions.

And you don’t need effete snobs at fancy foreign policy shops/think tanks telling Americans what common sense dictates.

Iran does NOT want to DANCE.

The United States and Israel will deal with Iranian ambitions and their nuclear program with few allies.

But, they WILL deal with Iran (including military operations, if required).
