stricklandaudramay30aweb1hs Election 2006 Watch: California 37 Assembly District - GOP PrimaryGOP Assemblywoman Audra Strickland and California GOP Controller Candidate Tony Strickland
VS.
larkinbobmay30aweb8ck Election 2006 Watch: California 37 Assembly District - GOP Primary Businessman Bob Larkin

Los Angeles Times:Contest Is a Battle for GOP’s Soul

The 37th Assembly District race could indicate the mood of the national party this year.

For the second time in a row, the Republican primary in the 37th Assembly District is shaping up as battle for the soul of the GOP.

On the right is the incumbent, Assemblywoman Audra Strickland, 31, who has used her first term to push such issues as repealing the gas tax, providing tax credits to offset private school tuition and getting rid of much of public education’s bureaucracy.

Her opponent, Bob Larkin, 70, represents a more moderate wing of Ventura County’s Republican Party, which has struggled in recent years to elect candidates.

Larkin, a businessman and grandfather of six, calls himself a fiscal conservative but thinks the government should stay out of social issues, “the way the party used to be,” he adds.

On June 6, Republican voters in Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Simi Valley, Camarillo and a portion of the San Fernando Valley will decide which of the two best represents their interests.

The outcome could hint at the mood of GOP voters nationwide, amid multiple scandals unfolding in Washington, D.C., said Allan Hoffenblum, a Republican political analyst.

Allan Hoffenblum has it WRONG.

The choice Ventura County voters will have on primary election day will between an ethically challenged (but cleared) young incumbent assemblywoman and a 70 year old RINO.

Flap handicaps an Audra Strickland win.

130237039_59a3f1d414_o Illegal Immigration Watch: Send a Brick Project Noticed in Washington

Rockey Mountain News: Lawmakers get hard messages

Sometimes, mail call hits Congress like a ton of bricks - literally.

One by one, opponents of illegal immigration have been sending lawmakers real, red bricks with angry messages written on the side: “Build a wall. Deport them all.”

While hundreds of thousands of activists took to the streets Monday, lawmakers in Washington dealt with an increase in mail from supporters of a get-tough approach to illegal immigration.

Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., laughed about the heavy bricks he has found in his in-box, saying he’ll have to weigh them against the letters and calls he receives from both sides.

“The question I have is, how do they get that through security?” Allard said. “The second thing is, how did they afford the postage? Now that is a motivated citizen.”

Send a Brick to YOUR Congressman.

irannukemay30ajpgweb8jl Iran Nuclear Watch: Iran Wants to Resume Nuclear Talks with European Union

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, center, smiles as he leaving the meeting hall after he is greeted by his Malaysia’s counterpart Syed Hamid Albar, left, following the closing ceremony of the Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Putrajaya, Malaysia, Tuesday, May 30, 2006. The Non-Aligned Movement, the world’s biggest bloc after the United Nations, emphatically backed Iran Tuesday in its nuclear standoff with the United States, and condemned Israel for occupying Palestinian lands.

ASSociated Press: Iran says it wants to resume EU talks

Iran’s foreign minister said Tuesday that Tehran is ready to restart negotiations with the European Union on its nuclear program, but he ruled out direct talks with the United States.

“I announce that Iran is ready to respond positively to the call” made by the Nonaligned Movement “for resuming the negotiations on Iran’s nuclear issue without any preconditions,” Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters.

“Accordingly, I would announce our readiness to restart immediately the negotiations with the EU Three to resolve the issues,” he said, referring to Britain, France and Germany.

The announcement raised hopes that Iran would react positively to a planned package of incentives meant to convince it to abandon uranium enrichment. The package has been put together by the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany.

But, will Iran immediately halt their uranium enrichment program?

This is the pre-condition for any further negotiations.

The package was to be presented to Tehran by France, Britain and Germany — the nations that broke off talks with Iran in August 2005 after it resumed activities linked to uranium enrichment.

But, Iran declines direct engagement with the United States.

“Because of the bad temperament of the Americans, for the time being we have suspended direct talks (with the U.S). After changing of the behavior we may consider again,” said Mottaki, who was in Malaysia to attend a meeting of foreign ministers of the Nonaligned Movement, which ended Tuesday.

The United States WILL NOT negotiate with Iran unless the IAEA has verified that all uranium enrichment has been stopped.

Flap is doubtful that Iran will ever allow the IAEA to make unfettered inspections of their nuclear facilities again.

Stay tuned for Thursday’s meeting of Big 6 foreign ministers.

A meeting of the European foreign ministers, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, was set for Thursday in Vienna, said the diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were disclosing confidential information.
