Global War on Terror Watch: House Resolution 895 Passes 227-183
House of Representatives: H. Res. 895:
supporting intelligence and law enforcement programs to track terrorists and terrorist finances conducted consistent with Federal law and with appropriate Congressional consultation and specifically condemning the disclosure and publication of classified information that impairs the international fight against terrorism and needlessly exposes Americans to the threat of further terror attacks by revealing a crucial method by which terrorists are traced through their finances.
The roll call is here: (Roll no. 357).
The resolution is real “WEAK SAUCE” and does not NAME NAMES but it clearly defines the partisan divide between the GOP and Democrats.
Flap listened to the debate and it was weak too, especially the GOP who let Barney Frank, D-MA make too many unanswered points.
Perhaps some in the GOP do NOT wish to offend the New York Times and prefer to be invited to the “TRENDY” media parties and to be interviewed by the New York and Los Angeles Times editorial boards.
Hugh Hewitt is RIGHT to be outraged.
On H. Res. 895 the GOP WIMPED OUT.

From the Washington Times: Casey cites Iran hand in attacks by Iraqi Shi’ites.
The top U.S. commander in Iraq said yesterday [June 22] that covert Iranian troops are training brethren Iraqi Shi’ites on how to attack U.S. and coalition troops. The disclosure by Army Gen. George Casey is the most pointed Pentagon criticism of Iran’s militant regime, which is embroiled in a debate with the United States because Washington demands an end to Tehran’s uranium enrichment.

Iran Nuclear Watch: Iran Brushes Aside G-8 Deadline on P-5-plus-1 Proposal
Manouchehr Mottaki, Foreign Minister of Iran adresses reporters at a press conference at United Nations headquarters in New York Thursday, June, 29, 2006.
AP: Iran brushes aside deadline on response
Iran’s foreign minister on Thursday brushed aside demands from the major industrialized nations to respond by July 5 to an international offer for Tehran to roll back its uranium enrichment program, saying his nation would need until August.
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran had questions about the proposal that will be raised in talks expected early next month with Javier Solana, the
European Union’s foreign policy chief. The questions need to be answered so Tehran can respond in August, he said.“The Islamic Republic of Iran is seriously and carefully reviewing the proposed package,” he said. “Questions and ambiguities on the Iranian side are pending. Therefore, we welcome the discussions and negotiations for clarification of those ambiguities.”
Stall, Stall, Stall
Tick Tick Tick – as the Natanz uranium enrichment centrifuges spin in Natanz.
Refer them to the United Nations Security Council…..
Enough already……..
Listen to Mottaki Bul*sh*t his way ……..
Mottaki, asked about the Group of Eight request for a response by July 5, noted that when Solana presented the package to the Iranians in Tehran “we did not agree on any specific date to respond.”
“The response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the proposed package … is clear and will be substantive but … the proposed package contains questions and ambiguities which must be clear,” he said.
“Some of these ambiguities may be responded by Mr. Solana,” Mottaki said, but some questions may need “a substantive response” from the six countries that drafted the incentive package, the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.
The Iranian minister said the government set up committees to review different aspects of the package because it wanted careful consideration of all aspects. Presumably, the committees would also consider any responses from the six nations that proposed the package.
Mottaki rejected claims that Iran was playing for time, saying the proposal took months to prepare.
Since the issue is important, he said, “I think the time until August is not a long time for submitting a response — and that’s very natural and normal.”
“I’ve said that such response will be in August. I didn’t say early August or mid-August,” he said.
Refer Iran.
The answer is NO!
Stay tuned……..

North Korea Watch: Bush WARNS North Korea Not To Test Missile
US President George W. Bush(R) and First Lady Laura Bush(L) welcome the Prime Minister of Japan Junichiro Koizumi during an official White House Arrival Ceremony at the White House in Washington, DC. Bush and Koizumi underlined their common vision on challenges like Iraq and North Korea to open their final White House summit.
AP: Bush Warns N. Korea Not to Test Missile
President Bush on Thursday warned North Korea not to test-fire a long- range missile, saying Pyongyang must tell the world its intentions for any launch.
“Launching the missile is unacceptable,” Bush said in an East Room news conference alongside Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Bush said that he and the Japanese leader discussed concerns about what is loaded onto the missile and where North Korea intends to aim it. He asked for “a full briefing” from the North Koreas about their intentions.
“There have been no briefings as to what’s on top of the missile. He hasn’t told anybody where the missile’s going,” the president said in a reference to North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. “He has an obligation, it seems like to me and to the prime minister, that there be a full briefing to those of us who are concerned about this issue as to what his intentions are.”The world has been treading water for days while Kim Jong-Il decides what do do with his seemingly fueled
How long can this missile remain fueled on its launch pad? A few more weeks?
Answer: Depends whether the missile has been completely fueled.
Kim Jong-Il has been given the ultimatum to stand down.
Will the United States preemptively attack the missile should a launch be imminent? Or await and attempt an interception?
Picture released on June 16 shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il. North Korea has offered the United States talks on its missile launch plans, indicating it might put off a flight test that has raised tension and drawn sharp international warnings.

Global War on Terror Watch: House Resolution 895 – Redux
A pedestrian passes the New York Times building in April 2006 in New York City.
Washington Post: Bush Seeks to Use Media Leaks to His AdvantagePresident Bush rallied Republicans with another attack on the media last night, in remarks that highlighted efforts at the White House and on Capitol Hill to gain momentum from recent disclosures about classified programs to fight terrorism.
Senior administration officials say the president was outraged by articles in the New York Times and other newspapers about a surveillance program in which the U.S. government has tapped international banking records for information about terrorist financing. But his comments at a Republican fundraiser in a St. Louis suburb yesterday, combined with new moves by GOP congressional leaders, showed how both are working to fan public anger and reap gains from the controversy during a midterm election year in which polls show they are running against stiff headwinds.
The Washington Post can spin the public’s outrage with the press on the disclosure of the secret SWIFT progam any way it wishes, but, the outrage is real and originates not by the President but by the public/voters. The House will introduce, debate and vote on House Resolution 895 today.
The text of the resolution is here.
The GOP resolution, sponsored by Rep. Michael G. Oxley (Ohio), also states that “the disclosure of the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program has unnecessarily complicated efforts by the United States Government to prosecute the war on terror and may have placed the lives of Americans in danger both at home and in many regions of the world.” It “condemns the unauthorized disclosure of classified information by those persons responsible and expresses concern that the disclosure may endanger the lives of American citizens.”
The resolution does not name the New York and Los Angels Times. However, the strategy of the House GOP appears to make the Democrats go on the record against illegal leaks of classified material and side with the New York and Los Angeles Times or President Bush’s and the GOP’s criticism. A wedge vote that WILL be used in the Fall House elections.
The Democrats are already backing away from criticism of the press but instead resumed its attacks on President Bush and the GOP.
“This is all so people don’t realize what else is going on,” especially in Iraq, said Rep. Rahm Emanuel (Ill.), who is heading his party’s efforts to regain control of the House in the November elections. “This is disingenuous of both the White House and House Republicans.”
US President George W. Bush gestures as he speaks during a fundraiser for the re-election campaign of Sen. Jim Talent , R-MO, at the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton, MO. Bush said Wednesday that there was “no excuse” for news accounts last week that gave details of a secret program to track and disrupt terrorism financing
Hugh Hewitt has The House Should Defeat H.R. 895. Maybe the Senate Will Represent the People?
The question before the Congress, the one on which the House –inexplicably, and to the shame of the GOP majority there, has apparently punted– is did the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times injure the war effort by assisting terrorists in avoiding capture?
All the rest is posturing.
The resolutions in both House and Senate are being brought forward because of the stories from Friday.
Not referencing the stories is clearly understood by observors to be an acknowledgment that these papers are privileged in a way soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines are not: They get to make mistakes, and not be called to account.
If the House and Senate don’t call them to account, and with specificity, these papers and others will repeat their behaviors.
I just don’t see how a civilian could vote for a non-specific resolution and look a military man or woman –or the family of one of the fallen– in the eye and say: “We spoke for you. We voted a non-specific resolution of condemnation of various behaviors that might hurt the war effort and lead to the escape of terrorists from justice.”
What a horrible joke. What an insult to the military. What a terrible insult to the fallen.
The House should defeat Resolution 895, and its serious members demand a real rebuke to the scribblers who endanger the effort.
And the United States Senate should not commit a similar error.
202-224-3121.
Flap agrees with Hugh that H. Res. 895 is “WEAK SAUCE.” Is this the best the House can do?
NOPE
Should the resolution be defeated?
NOPE
The resolution is better than NOTHING – but not much better.
The debate will be lively and interesting to see if the Democrats concur or take up the sword for the New York Times.
Stay tuned …….
Patterico weighs in with Support House Resolution 895Â
Flap would vote for the resolution but it IS “weak sauce” and misses the point on condemning the egregiously disgraceful conduct by the New York and Los Angeles Times. Bill Keller and Dean Baquet have made poor judgment calls and this resolution will not hold them accountable.
But, Flap likes the idea of making the Democrats vote against their ideological friends in the MSM – if they dare.
