A man is taken into custody in an unmarked car last night at 19 Division police station in Pickering after a series of arrests in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Globe and Mail: Accused in terrorism plot from a “broad strata” of society

From an unmarried computer programmer to a university health sciences graduate and the unemployed, the 17 suspects charged in a foiled terrorist plot represent a “broad strata” of Canadian society.

“Some are students, some are employed, some are unemployed,” RCMP assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell said Saturday.

Family members wept as the 17 accused, five of whom were youths at the time of the alleged crimes and cannot be named, were brought into a Brampton courtroom in small groups, handcuffed and shackled at the feet.

“Broad Strata,” EH?

Those terrorists and their women look like Islamic Jihadists to Flap. This euphemistic attempt to hide the truth is ludicrous.

A group of women identified as relatives of some of the men arrested last night on terrorism charges wait to be let in to the Brampton courthouse Saturday, June 3, 2006.

Here are the adult suspects:

1. Fahim Ahmad, 21, of Robinstone Drive, Toronto, Ontario;
2. Zakaria Amara, 20, of Periwinkle Crescent, Mississauga, Ontario;
3. Asad Ansari, 21, of Rosehurst Drive, Mississauga, Ontario;
4. Shareef Abdelhaleen, 30, of Lowville Heights, Mississauga, Ontario;
5. Qayyum Abdul Jamal, 43, of Montevideo Road, Mississauga, Ontario;
6. Mohammed Dirie, 22, Kingston, Ontario;
7. Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, Kingston, Ontario;
8. Jahmaal James, 23, of Trudelle Street, Toronto, Ontario;
9. Amin Mohamed Durrani, 19, of Stonehill Court, Toronto, Ontario;
10. Steven Vikash Chand alias Abdul Shakur, 25, of Treverton Drive, Toronto, Ontario;
11. Ahmad Mustafa Ghany, 21, of Robin Drive, Mississauga, Ontario;
12. Saad Khalid, 19, of Eclipse Avenue, Mississauga, Ontario.

Real Canadian names from the “Broad Strata” of Canadian society…..NOT!

Most of the group, who were remanded into custody until their next court appearance on Tuesday, wore street clothes although some appeared in white jump suits.

The majority sported the traditional Muslim male beard.

Alvin Chand, brother of Toronto suspect Steven Vikash Chand, scoffed at the charges outside the courthouse.

“He’s not a terrorist, come on, he’s a Canadian citizen” Mr. Chand said of his brother. “The people that were arrested are good people. They go to the mosque. They go to school, go to college.”

RIGHT……

Michelle Malkin has EUPHEMISM O’ THE DAY: “BROAD STRATA”

Oh, dear Lord. A jihadist plot, possibly of global scale, possibly imminent, unravels in Canada…and what do law enforcement officials do? Try to whitewash the obvious jihadi profile from the public’s mind.

At the press briefing held by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police today, the suspects who appeared in court–all sporting traditional Muslim male beards and requesting Korans–were described as coming from a “broad strata“of society. (Hat tip: reader Ed)

Broad strata.

Yes, the same “broad strata” from which the 9/11 hijackers, 1993 World Trade Center bombers, USS Cole bombers, etc., etc., etc., came.

Captain Ed has Broad Strata?

The RCMP and all of the Canadian government can keep talking about broad strata all day long, but the seventeen have this much in common: they are all Muslim, something that the G&M manages to slyly emphasize in that last line. If the RCMP hopes to jolly Canadian Muslims into feeling comfortable, then their efforts have not paid off:

Gee, why does he suppose that might be? Is he prepared to argue that their possession of three tons of ammonium nitrate was meant for a new 4-H club project, perhaps?

The only broad strata at work is the network of multicultural apologists that will attempt to make themselves feel good by ignoring the obvious connection between these suspects, the one that even a child could detect from the list of suspects and their involvement in Islamist websites. That broad strata will go to their deaths rather than admit that radical Islam comprises a threat against Western civilization. Unfortunately, they will take the rest of us with them.

Leader Protests U.S. Tone in Nuclear Dispute but Hints at Breakthrough

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Saturday that Iran would publish details of the package of incentives and possible penalties prepared by the United States and five other major powers aimed at halting Iran’s nuclear program.

In a speech in which he warned Iran’s critics against “threats and intimidation,” Ahmadinejad seemed to sweep aside a request by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan to keep the process confidential. Western diplomats had said they were trying to avoid the appearance of threatening Iran by keeping the terms of the package as private as possible, especially the specific penalties Iran might face if it continues to enrich uranium.

“We will record the talks and we will publish them at the appropriate time, so our people will be informed about the details,” Ahmadinejad said in his first speech since the package was agreed upon by the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany.

Addressing a crowd of government loyalists at the tomb of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of Iran’s theocratic state, Ahmadinejad said Iran would not prejudge the offer from the United States and the other countries. But he reiterated Iran’s refusal to cease enriching uranium as a condition for formal negotiations, saying, “The Iranian nation’s right to nuclear technology and power is legal and definite, and we will not talk about these issues.”

And do you REALLY believe Admadinejad and the Mullahs will share any offer with the Iranian people?

The rhetoric is softening because the Iranians realize they have been “trapped” in a diplomatic stalemate by Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.

There may be an agreement but TRUST BUT VERIFY.

Captain Ed has Ahmadinejad: I’ve Got A Secret 

As I have written before — that’s exactly what Ahmadinejad wants. He is neither rational nor irrational, but non-rational. His messianic strain of Shi’ism drives him to believe in a world catastrophe in which the Twelfth Imam will arise and take control of the entire world. Everything Ahmadinejad does is completely understandable in this context. His efforts to derive nuclear material for a bomb is the most public of his efforts to create explosions of every kind, and to put Iran in the center of the maelstrom. He’s planning for Islam’s transcendancy, not in a strictly corporeal sense but in a spiritual sense as well.

In poker terms, this man is all in for the pot. And it has become increasingly clear that he isn’t bluffing for the final hand.

Flap agrees and ultimately it will be the United States and Israel who will have to deal with the maniac Ahmadinejad, the Mullahs and his nuclear program.  And it looks like President Bush has decided that it will be his administration that will have to deal with Iran – no punting to the next President.

ASSociated Press: Iran welcomes unconditional talks on nukes

A breakthrough in negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program is possible, the republic’s president told the U.N. chief Saturday while welcoming unconditional talks with all parties, including the United States.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a speech later Saturday that his government would not rush to judge an incentives package offered by Western countries to persuade Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program.

State television reported that Ahmadinejad spoke by phone to U.N. Secretary-General
Kofi Annan and told him the crisis could be settled as long as the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog agency preserved Tehran’s right to use atomic energy.

A U.S. offer for negotiations is conditioned on Iran suspending uranium enrichment — a process that can produce both fuel for nuclear reactors that generate electricity and the material for atomic warheads — and allowing international inspections to prove it.

This is a joke, right?

Why would the Big 6 be interested in unconditional negotiations, when Iran has been stalling for years, while developing a nuclear weapon manufacturing program?

The Quotes:

“A breakthrough to overcome world problems, including Iran’s nuclear case, would be the equal implementation of the law for all,” state TV quoted Ahmadinejad as telling Annan.

“We won’t make any prejudgement about the proposal to be presented to us … we won’t be in haste to judge it,” Ahmadinejad told thousands of people in Iran’s capital, Tehran.

“We are after negotiations, but fair and just negotiations. They must be without any conditions,” he said in a speech marking the anniversary of the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution.

“The Iranian nation won’t give in to talks that contain threats or conditions that seek to deprive our definite right,” Ahmadinejad said.

This is NOT a positive Iranian response to the Big 6′s proposal. But, Ahmadinejad has NOT been bloviating as usual so…….

1. Iran has reached a technical snag in their uranium enrichment program or
2. Iran is very close to announcing they have manufactured a nuclear weapon and need a little more time.

The Claremont Institute Local Liberty Blog: “Anchors Away”

Nationally syndicated columnist Mona Charen’s latest column on immigration focusses attention on our argument challenging the popular myth that the Constitution mandates “birthright citizenship.” People down on the border know that “birthright citizenship” provides a powerful incentive for illegal sojourns into the United States for purposes of giving birth on U.S. soil. Here’s how Austin Bay, editorial writer for the Houston Chronicle, reported what he calls the “baby predicament” in a May 20, 2006 column:

“At the first indications of impending birth, a pregnant Mexican woman crosses the border in a car. As her labor begins in earnest, her driver drops her off at the hospital. The doctors confront an immediate challenge: A baby is definitely being born. In the typical case, the soon-to-be mother has had no prenatal care. However, she has had a plan — her child will be born in the United States, come political hell in Washington or high water in the Rio Grande.”

Talk to any doctor in El Paso, or any border town, for that matter, and you’ll get the same story. There is even a “birth tourism” industry in southern California, as recently reported by the Los Angeles NBC affiliate in a major expose, following an old 2002 Los Angeles Times story about South Koren “birth tourism” trips to the U.S.

All from a misunderstanding of our Constitution’s Citizenship Clause. We’ll keep pressing the point, because our very sovereignty, and the principle of government by consent, is at stake. Professor Eastman has an argument but a more immediate impediment to “Anchor Babies” is the enhancement of border security, including physical impediments to border crossings.

Flap thinks it will be easier politically to simply build a wall and enforce employer sanctions than to identify and deny birth citizenship rights to babies.

Keep the illegal aliens out by making it difficult to cross into the United States by barriers and passport control and the problem with “Anchors” disappears.

Toronto Star: Huge bomb planned: police

Families waiting at the courthouse finally got a chance to see the detainees when they were brought before a justice of the peace around 3:30 p.m.

Handcuffed to one another and wearing leg irons the detainees stood silently while the justice of the peace remanded them into custody until June 6 when they are scheduled to reappear.

Through their lawyers, some complained about the conditions where they were held Friday night and asked that they be given copies of the Qur’an while in custody.

Flap says Gitmo would be a good start for these terrorists.

Let’s see how a different government deals with their own homegrown terrorists.

Bet they don’t have their Korans yet……..

Steynonline: BOAT PEOPLE

I hate writing about immigration, really I do. I’m an immigrant myself and it’s hardly my place to say who should or shouldn’t be let into America. I feel like the weekending New Yorker who snaps up the last 18th century farmhouse in Vermont and then goes to Town Meeting to whine about the proposed subdivision on the edge of the village.
