Peace activist Cindy Sheehan, left, is conforted by Iraqi War veteran, former Army Sgt. Geoffrey Millard, as they say prayers, before they eat their last meal before beginning the fast at midnight to end the Iraq War, in front of the White House, Monday, July 3, 2006, in Washington.

Reuters: Anti-War Protesters Begin July 4 Fast

About 150 protesters sat in front of the White House on Monday to savor their last meal before starting a hunger strike that some said will continue until American troops return from Iraq.

The demonstration marking the Independence Day holiday was organized by CodePink, a women’s anti-war group that called on volunteers to abstain from eating for 24 hours from midnight on Monday.

Some protesters said their fast would continue beyond July 4th.

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq, said she would drink only water throughout the summer, which she said she would spend outside President George W. Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas.

“This war is a crime,” Sheehan told a crowd of clapping, cheering protesters. “We represent millions of Americans who withdraw their support from this government.”

Impact: ZERO

And look it is Daniel Ellsberg from Pentagon Papers leakage fame.

Flap is surprised Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr., Publisher of the New York Times was not out there marching in solidarity with Ellsberg. Oh, Flap knows – Sulzberger was there in kindred spirit.

And here is a special July 4th message from Mother Moonbat herself (H/T LGF):

I implore you, while you are enjoying your potato salad and fireworks on the 4th to reflect on what the star-spangled banner means to you. If our flag symbolizes the same thing to you as it does to the neocons, then by all means, enlist and go to Iraq to let some of our soldiers come home that are tired of suffering and committing war crimes for Halliburton, Dick and Donny.

If, however, you realize that the flag no longer waves “o’er the land of the free” and you would like it to again, we invite you to come out to Camp Casey this summer and help us fight for the heart and soul of our nation. If you realize that while you are “oohing and ahing” over the pretty fireworks in your home town that there are real bombs bursting on the people of Iraq, killing them and destroying their nation for no reason other than Dick Cheney wanted to, then you need to digest your 4th of July BBQ and get out and show Dicky and the world that we mean business when we say we want our troops to come home to save them and our brothers and sisters in Iraq.

gwotprotest010web4md Global War on Terror Watch: New York Times Protest in Washington D.C. Today The Photos

Michelle Malkin: DISSENT IS PATRIOTIC, II

It was a small, but stalwart crowd outside the D.C. offices of the NY Times this afternoon. Free Republic co-organizer Kristinn Taylor told me he wasn’t aware of any Times reporters or photographers covering the event outside their doorstep. Lots of spirited signs and chanting from a couple dozen protesters–plus befuddled questions from MSM types who don’t understand why the repeat offenders at the Times are being singled out. We’ll have video later at Hot Air.

Photos are here.

Other photos here.

A small crowd but important none the less. Maybe if someone had protested before the 1983 Beirut bombing two hundred plus Americans would still be alive.

The next protest will be in New York City: Main NYC offices of the Times is scheduled for July 10, 5pm Eastern, 229 West 43rd Street.

Stay tuned for video and more……

irannukejuly3jweb3kk Iran Nuclear Watch: Iranian Nuclear Officials Dismiss Demand that Iran Suspend Uranium Enrichment
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad listens to a speech while attending the African Union summit in Gambia’s capital Banjul, July 1, 2006.

Reuters: Iran dismisses suspension of atomic work: agencies

Senior Iranian nuclear officials on Monday dismissed a demand that Iran suspend uranium enrichment, which was proposed in a nuclear package backed by six world powers, Iranian news agencies reported.

“We have announced our opinion on suspension and we do not think it is a reasonable proposition,” Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Mehr News Agency.

Larijani is due to meet European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Wednesday to discuss the package.

Iranian officials have previously insisted Iran will not suspend the sensitive atomic work, and the remarks by Larijani and other officials suggest a breakthrough is unlikely.

Iran has been consistent in their statements that they will NOT suspend their sovereign right to uranium enrichment. Iran covets nuclear weapons.

Tick Tick Tick

Refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council for sanctions NOW.

NewsBusters, org: WashPost Publisher Admitted Media Leak To Blame for Marine Barracks Bombing

Katherine Graham, the late publisher of the Washington Post, presided over the paper as it brought down the Nixon administration with Watergate. She has been labeled one of the most influential women of the 20th century. But in a 1986 speech, she admitted that the media were to blame for bringing down the U.S. Marine Barracks in Beirut. The 1983 terrorist attack killed 241 servicemen.

The U.S. had broken the code used by the terrorists to communicate. When that information was leaked to the media, the code was no longer used, and five months later, 241 Marines lost their lives.

From Safeguarding Our Freedoms As We Cover Terrorist Acts

Tragically, however, we in the media have made mistakes. You may recall that in April 1983, some 60 people were killed in a bomb attack on the U.S. embassy in Beirut. At the time, there was coded radio traffic between Syria, where the operation was being run, and Iran, which was supporting it. Alas, one television network and a newspaper columnist reported that the U.S. government had intercepted the traffic. Shortly thereafter the traffic ceased. This undermined efforts to capture the terrorist leaders and eliminated a source of information about future attacks. Five months later, apparently the same terrorists struck again at the Marine barracks in Beirut; 241 servicemen were killed.

This kind of result, albeit unintentional, points up the necessity for full cooperation wherever possible between the media and the authorities. When the media obtains especially sensitive information, we are willing to tell the authorities what we have learned and what we plan to report. And while reserving the right to make the final decision ourselves, we are anxious to listen to arguments about why information should not be aired.

And, so, Flap asks Bill Keller again, how many Americans have to die?

Maybe if Keller is ever interviewed by a non-MSM media source he can give the American people his answer?

Hopefully, Patterico will get to ask the Editor of the Los Angeles Times the same question.

North Korea Watch: United States Responds to North Korea Threat of Nuclear War
A commercial satellite photo of North Korea’s Nodong missile launch site taken on by a Digital Globe satellite and annotated and released by analysts at GlobalSecurity.org on May 24, 2006. The United States and Japan warned North Korea on Monday against a missile launch that experts say could reach as far as Alaska and threatened harsh action if the test flight goes ahead.

AP: White House: U.S. Would Guard Vs. Missile

The Bush administration responded sternly Monday to an annihilation threat from North Korea, saying while it had no intention of attacking, it was determined to protect the United States if North Korea launched a long-range missile.

“Should North Korea take the provocative action of launching a missile the U.S. would respond appropriately, including by taking the necessary measures to protect ourselves,” Julie Reside, a State Department spokeswoman, said.

Looks like option 2: interception and destruction of the Taepodong-2 if launched.

Of course, the United States asked North Korea to return to the six-party talks.

Stay tuned…..
