Cindy Sheehan Watch: 150 Anti-Iraq War Protesters Begin Hunger Strike
Peace activist Cindy Sheehan, left, is conforted by Iraqi War veteran, former Army Sgt. Geoffrey Millard, as they say prayers, before they eat their last meal before beginning the fast at midnight to end the Iraq War, in front of the White House, Monday, July 3, 2006, in Washington.Reuters: Anti-War Protesters Begin July 4 Fast
About 150 protesters sat in front of the White House on Monday to savor their last meal before starting a hunger strike that some said will continue until American troops return from Iraq.
The demonstration marking the Independence Day holiday was organized by CodePink, a women’s anti-war group that called on volunteers to abstain from eating for 24 hours from midnight on Monday.
Some protesters said their fast would continue beyond July 4th.
Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq, said she would drink only water throughout the summer, which she said she would spend outside President George W. Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas.
“This war is a crime,” Sheehan told a crowd of clapping, cheering protesters. “We represent millions of Americans who withdraw their support from this government.”
Impact: ZERO
And look it is Daniel Ellsberg from Pentagon Papers leakage fame.
Cindy Sheehan, center, and Daniel Ellsberg, right, join others in a march called the ‘Granny Peace Brigade’, Monday, July 3, 2006, in Washington.Flap is surprised Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr., Publisher of the New York Times was not out there marching in solidarity with Ellsberg. Oh, Flap knows – Sulzberger was there in kindred spirit.

And here is a special July 4th message from Mother Moonbat herself (H/T LGF):
I implore you, while you are enjoying your potato salad and fireworks on the 4th to reflect on what the star-spangled banner means to you. If our flag symbolizes the same thing to you as it does to the neocons, then by all means, enlist and go to Iraq to let some of our soldiers come home that are tired of suffering and committing war crimes for Halliburton, Dick and Donny.
If, however, you realize that the flag no longer waves “o’er the land of the free” and you would like it to again, we invite you to come out to Camp Casey this summer and help us fight for the heart and soul of our nation. If you realize that while you are “oohing and ahing” over the pretty fireworks in your home town that there are real bombs bursting on the people of Iraq, killing them and destroying their nation for no reason other than Dick Cheney wanted to, then you need to digest your 4th of July BBQ and get out and show Dicky and the world that we mean business when we say we want our troops to come home to save them and our brothers and sisters in Iraq.

Global War on Terror Watch: New York Times Protest in Washington D.C. Today – The Photos
Michelle Malkin: DISSENT IS PATRIOTIC, II
It was a small, but stalwart crowd outside the D.C. offices of the NY Times this afternoon. Free Republic co-organizer Kristinn Taylor told me he wasn’t aware of any Times reporters or photographers covering the event outside their doorstep. Lots of spirited signs and chanting from a couple dozen protesters–plus befuddled questions from MSM types who don’t understand why the repeat offenders at the Times are being singled out. We’ll have video later at Hot Air.
And just in a photo of Malkin v. Wonkette
Michelle Malkin stares down Ana Marie Cox (the former Wonkette). Captain Ed says he always bets on the fighter wearing the largest earrings.
A small crowd but important none the less. Maybe if someone had protested before the 1983 Beirut bombing two hundred plus Americans would still be alive.
The next protest will be in New York City: Main NYC offices of the Times is scheduled for July 10, 5pm Eastern, 229 West 43rd Street.
Stay tuned for video and more……

Iran Nuclear Watch: Iranian Nuclear Officials Dismiss Demand that Iran Suspend Uranium Enrichment
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad listens to a speech while attending the African Union summit in Gambia’s capital Banjul, July 1, 2006.Reuters: Iran dismisses suspension of atomic work: agencies
Senior Iranian nuclear officials on Monday dismissed a demand that Iran suspend uranium enrichment, which was proposed in a nuclear package backed by six world powers, Iranian news agencies reported.
“We have announced our opinion on suspension and we do not think it is a reasonable proposition,” Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Mehr News Agency.
Larijani is due to meet European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Wednesday to discuss the package.
Iranian officials have previously insisted Iran will not suspend the sensitive atomic work, and the remarks by Larijani and other officials suggest a breakthrough is unlikely.
Iran has been consistent in their statements that they will NOT suspend their sovereign right to uranium enrichment. Iran covets nuclear weapons.
Tick Tick Tick
Refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council for sanctions NOW.

Global War on Terror Watch: Washington Post Editor Admitted Newspaper Published “LEAK” Cost American Lives
NewsBusters, org: WashPost Publisher Admitted Media Leak To Blame for Marine Barracks Bombing
Katherine Graham, the late publisher of the Washington Post, presided over the paper as it brought down the Nixon administration with Watergate. She has been labeled one of the most influential women of the 20th century. But in a 1986 speech, she admitted that the media were to blame for bringing down the U.S. Marine Barracks in Beirut. The 1983 terrorist attack killed 241 servicemen.
The U.S. had broken the code used by the terrorists to communicate. When that information was leaked to the media, the code was no longer used, and five months later, 241 Marines lost their lives.
From Safeguarding Our Freedoms As We Cover Terrorist Acts
Tragically, however, we in the media have made mistakes. You may recall that in April 1983, some 60 people were killed in a bomb attack on the U.S. embassy in Beirut. At the time, there was coded radio traffic between Syria, where the operation was being run, and Iran, which was supporting it. Alas, one television network and a newspaper columnist reported that the U.S. government had intercepted the traffic. Shortly thereafter the traffic ceased. This undermined efforts to capture the terrorist leaders and eliminated a source of information about future attacks. Five months later, apparently the same terrorists struck again at the Marine barracks in Beirut; 241 servicemen were killed.
This kind of result, albeit unintentional, points up the necessity for full cooperation wherever possible between the media and the authorities. When the media obtains especially sensitive information, we are willing to tell the authorities what we have learned and what we plan to report. And while reserving the right to make the final decision ourselves, we are anxious to listen to arguments about why information should not be aired.
And, so, Flap asks Bill Keller again, how many Americans have to die?
Maybe if Keller is ever interviewed by a non-MSM media source he can give the American people his answer?
Hopefully, Patterico will get to ask the Editor of the Los Angeles Times the same question.

North Korea Watch: United States Responds to North Korea Threat of Nuclear War
A commercial satellite photo of North Korea’s Nodong missile launch site taken on by a Digital Globe satellite and annotated and released by analysts at GlobalSecurity.org on May 24, 2006. The United States and Japan warned North Korea on Monday against a missile launch that experts say could reach as far as Alaska and threatened harsh action if the test flight goes ahead.AP: White House: U.S. Would Guard Vs. Missile
The Bush administration responded sternly Monday to an annihilation threat from North Korea, saying while it had no intention of attacking, it was determined to protect the United States if North Korea launched a long-range missile.
“Should North Korea take the provocative action of launching a missile the U.S. would respond appropriately, including by taking the necessary measures to protect ourselves,” Julie Reside, a State Department spokeswoman, said.
Looks like option 2: interception and destruction of the Taepodong-2 if launched.
Of course, the United States asked North Korea to return to the six-party talks.

Senator Joe Lieberman Watch: Lieberman Will Run as an Independent if He Loses Democrat Primary
Senators John McCain and Joe LiebermanAP: Lieberman may campaign as independent
U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, facing a stronger-than-expected Democratic primary challenge and sagging poll numbers because of his support of the Iraq war, said Monday he’ll collect signatures to run as an unaffiliated candidate if he loses next month’s primary.
“While I believe that I will win the Aug. 8 primary, I know there are no guarantees in elections,” Lieberman told reporters on the steps of Connecticut’s statehouse Monday. “No one really knows how many Democrats will come out to vote on what may be a hot day in August.”
Lieberman said if he loses the primary, he would run in November as a petitioning Democrat. He said he plans to remain part of the Democratic caucus in the Senate if re-elected.
“I want the opportunity to put my case before all the people of Connecticut in November,” Lieberman said.
The Lefties in Connecticut and the blogosphere continue to eat one of their own. Welcome to the GOP (well, sort of) Senator.
Former Connecticut State Democratic Party Chairman George Jepsen, left, gives his endorsement to Ned Lamont, right, at a news conference outside the state Capitol in Hartford, Conn., Monday, June 19, 2006. Lamont is challenging incumbent three-term Democratic U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman for the nomination to run for the U.S. Senate from Connecticut.Lieberman will be re-elected Senator from Connecticut.
Wonder what the LEFT will do to Hillary who has similar views on the Iraq War? Don’t count Al Gore out.
Markos Moulitsas “Screw Them†Zuniga and Lamont in Hartford. And the cursing at KOS (H/T Althouse)
Captain Ed has Lieberman Starts His Independent BidThe Lamont Blog has a response one could not describe as measured or even accurate:
In addition, Joe has just created a world of shit for his supposed friends Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, Chris Dodd, Diane Farrell, Joe Courtney, and Chris Murphy. I wonder what they all think of this. This is how he treats his friends. This is how he treats his party. On the slowest news day of the summer.
These are the actions of a very weak candidate, and a selfish and cowardly man.
What a sorry sight to see an 18-year incumbent senator running scared from a little primary challenge like this. No backbone. No courage. No integrity.
And not a Democrat anymore, either.
Lieberman remains a Democrat, even with the independent bid, especially since he’s committed to caucusing with the Democrats if elected. While one can understand why the Lamont campaign would want to make hay of both the announcement and its timing, the assignment of cowardice seems more than just a little ironic. Lieberman hasn’t pulled out of the primary, after all; he still plans on contesting it. More to the point, the entire reason for Lamont’s campaign and its surprisingly large following is that Lamont wants an immediate retreat from Iraq, cutting and running rather than fight the terrorists in the one place that even Osama understands as the center stage of the war on terror. Throwing around accusations of cowardice seems a bit odd under the circumstances.
I suspect that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will have some uncomfortable moments in the next few weeks. Undoubtedly they will hope that Lieberman will win the primary and let them off the hook. They may do more than just hope, which may result in a nasty split between the hard-Left and the DLC factions, just as the midterms approach. It looks like the Democrats may well wind up with the split that appeared imminent in the GOP until a couple of weeks ago
Captain Ed is RIGHT. There will be a dilemma that will cause a schism between the hard left netroot Kossaks on the one hand and the mainstream DNC operatives on the other. This intraparty split cannot be helpful to a party who seeks majority status. Fundraising would be especially hurt.
Moreover, a Lamont win in the primary will drive many maintream Democrats to the door and barring a few will vote for Lieberman anyway. How will this help the GOP? It will tie up resources that would otherwise go to other races e.g. Montana.

Mexico Presidential Election 2006 Watch: Felipe Calderon Declares Victory
Presidential candidate Felipe Calderon from National Action raises his hand after saying independent exit polls showed him ahead and he had “no doubt” he won the race in Mexico City, July 2, 2006.Reuters: Mexico conservative claims win as chaos fears ease
Mexico’s conservative presidential candidate Felipe Calderon declared victory on Monday in a bitterly contested election and official returns appeared to show his leftist rival could no longer catch him.
Calderon had a lead of almost 400,000 votes over Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador with returns in from 96.6 percent of polling stations and a senior election official said it was unlikely to change with a recount ordered for later this week.
A Calderon victory would ensure Mexico sticks to the free-market policies of outgoing President Vicente Fox and hold steady as a U.S. ally, bucking a trend of Latin American nations who have turned to the left and away from Washington in recent years.
“There is an irreversible result and it is in my favor,” a confident Calderon of the ruling National Action Party said in a television interview. “The result gives me a very clear victory that cannot be reversed.”
Good.
Now, let’s get busy in solving the illegal immigration problem that is plaguing the United States – unless the Lefties in Mexico claim THIS election was stolen from them.
The Americas don’t need another socialist MORON like Hugo Chavez in Argentina or Castro in Cuba.
Stay tuned……..

Meet The Press Watch: Washington Post’s Dana Priest Takes a “CHEAP SHOT” at Bill Bennett
Expose The Left: Post’s Dana Priest Attacks Bill Bennett In Response To NY Times’ SWIFT Story (VIDEO)
Dana Priest, who was obviously born without shame, personally attacked Bill Bennett this morning’s edition of Meet the Press. Priest compared the New York Times running the SWIFT story to casino gambling, a problem Bennett used to have.
The video is here: VIDEO – .WMV
Flap is positive that Bennett never admitted to having a “gambling” problem nor that his gambling (mainly high stakes video poker) ever place his family in financial peril. The Washington Monthly, a lefty journal, outed Bennett for supposed hypocrisy on writing The Book of Virtues and not being virtuous himself.
Flap enjoys casino gambling and as a Catholic, like Bennett, games of chance are not sinful in a religious sense.
It was shameful what Dana Priest did. Playing video poker with your own money is not the same as “outing” classified secret government counterterrorism information and,in turn, winning a Pulitzer Prize for it.
Flap’s suggestion to Priest is to confine herself to the issues and lay off the disgraceful personal ad hominem attacks.
