Senator Joe Lieberman Watch: Lieberman Vows to Run As An “Independent” in November

    liebermanaugust8fweb

CNN: Lieberman concedes to Lamont, vows to run in November

Sen. Joseph Lieberman conceded to cable executive Ned Lamont in the Democratic primary for the Connecticut Senate nomination Tuesday night but vowed to run as an “independent Democrat” this fall.

With 94 percent of the precincts reporting, Lamont led Lieberman 52 percent to 48 percent, according to The Associated Press.

Lieberman, who was former Vice President Al Gore’s running mate in 2000, is seeking a fourth Senate term. Lamont, a former Greenwich city councilman, is running his first statewide campaign.

After telling his supporters that he had called Lamont to congratulate him on his victory, Lieberman said “We’ve just finished the first half and the Lamont team is ahead, but, in the second half, our team — Team Connecticut — is going to surge forward to victory in November”

The three-term senator said he was disappointed by the results but said he was more disappointed in how the primary campaign was conducted.

“The old politics of partisan polarization won today. For the sake of our state, our country and my party, and I cannot, I will not let this result stand.”

As expected Lamont eeked out a small victory against Lieberman in the Democrat primary election.

Now, it is “game on” for Lieberman v. Lamont.

If anyone thinks the primary campaign was dirty and nasty, stay tuned…..

And Ed Koch, former Mayor of New York City is with Independent Joe.

New York’s “Mayor for Life” and one of the country’s most prominent Democrats says he’s backing Joe Lieberman’s independent run for U.S. Senate.

“There’s no blood oath binding him not to run as an independent,” Edward Koch told NewsMax.

Koch predicts that Lieberman, running as an independent, would win the general election handily. He also noted that Lieberman would continue to caucus with Democrats when he takes his seat in the Senate.

    Cox & Forkum: First Casualty

This weekend, Charles Johnson uncovered yet another breach of journalistic integrity: Reuters Doctoring Photos from Beirut?. Reuters has since killed the bogus photo and posted the original, unaltered photo. Apparently the photograher thought the photo of Beirut being bombed wasn’t dramatic enough.

From Ynet News: Reuters admits altering Beirut photo.

A Reuters photograph of smoke rising from buildings in Beirut has been withdrawn after coming under attack by American web logs. The blogs accused Reuters of distorting the photograph to include more smoke and damage. The photograph showed two very heavy plumes of black smoke billowing from buildings in Beirut after an Air Force attack on the Lebanese capital. Reuters has since withdrawn the photograph from its website, along a message admitting that the image was distorted, and an apology to editors. …

Adnan Hajj, the photographer who sent the altered image, was also the Reuters photographer behind many of the images from Qana – which have also been the subject of suspicions for being staged.

Reuters has dropped the freelance photographer, who is claming that he was just trying to “remove dust marks.” Yeah right. More on the work of Adnan Hajj at Riehl World and Ace of Spades.

Propaganda is propaganda and a free press is a free press – a prime example……..

AP: Dixie Chicks Cancel 14 Shows on Tour

Several concerts on the Dixie Chicks'”Accidents & Accusations” tour have been canceled after slow ticket sales, but the group says it has replaced them with other dates.

Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis, Memphis and Knoxville are among 14 cities no longer on the original schedule released in May, according to a revised itinerary posted Thursday on the Dixie Chick’s Web site.

Other shows, including Nashville, Los Angeles, Denver and Phoenix, have been pushed back to later dates.

Natalie’s big mouth has cost the Dixie Chicks their Midwest/South fan base and some real money in the process.

Senator Joe Lieberman Watch: Primary Election Day

    liebermanaugust8aweb

Greenwich resident and Democratic Senate hopeful Ned Lamont enters Greenwich high school with his daughter, Lindsay, 15, as he prepares to vote in the Democratic state primary in Greenwich, Conn., Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006. Lamont, a millionaire owner of a cable television company, held a slight lead of 51 percent to 45 percent over Sen. Joe Lieberman among likely Democratic voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday.

AP: Lieberman’s Senate seat in voters’ hands

With a new poll showing the race tightening between Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman and his anti-war opponent, both sides made their final pitches to voters in the nation’s most closely watched primary election.

Lieberman crisscrossed the state in a final attempt to keep his Senate seat and reassure voters who began going to the polls Tuesday morning in Connecticut’s primary election.

As polls opened at 6 a.m., Lieberman planned stops six stops around the state throughout the day.

He said that the voters who were upset with him were trying to “send me a message,” and he assured them: “I got their message.”

If defeated, Lieberman would be only the fourth incumbent senator since 1980 to lose a primary election.

Challenger Ned Lamont, a millionaire owner of a cable television company, held a slight lead of 51 percent to 45 percent over Lieberman among likely Democratic voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday.

The telephone poll of 784 likely Democratic primary voters, conducted from July 31 to Aug. 6, has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The race tightened in recent days, with Lamont’s lead cut from 13 points.

U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman greets supporters as he arrives at East Haven Community Center in East Haven, Conn., Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006.

Flap has handicapped a Lieberman loss in the primary and a win in the general election as an independent candidate. There is no reason to change this assessment.

Lieberman’s surge is likely due to President Clinton’s in-state campaigning and a reassessment by voters of a divisive Left-wing driven Lamont campaign.

Flap just heard Senator Chris Dodd spinning this election as a referendum on George Bush.

    Hardly so.

Joe Lieberman is a Liberal who happens to have a common sense approach to national security.

Joe Lieberman is NO George W. Bush.

A turn away/rejection of Lieberman’s Iraw War moderation (the same moderation held by Hillary Clinton) will make for interesting times in the Democrat Party. A turn to the left and the George McGovern wing will help the GOP in 2006 and 2008.

    Stay tuned……

Captain Ed has Will Moderates Survive In The Democratic Party?

We will see what Connecticut voters decide today, but if the race is close, we can expect a rematch in November. If Lamont does manage to win, the only possible interpretation is that the activist Left wants to cow the moderates in the Democratic party to support a pacifist policy and to end cooperation across the aisle. Anyone thinking that this is merely a referendum on George Bush is quite mistaken.
