Flap, I utterly agree about the ridiculous theories attributing the 9/11 attacks to the US/Israel. It’s the result of a desperate desire to cram world events into any kind of mental box which can sit comfortably within those people’s mental closets. That kind of thinking is sadly all too common these days.

On the other hand, and without passing judgement, why shouldn’t Iran be the regional hegemon of the middle east? After all, they live there, and their regime is no less repressive than Saudi, Syria et al. Vicious, murderous and unpleasant, but probably less so than its immediate neighbour will be in about a year’s time.

Is it the God-given right of western nations to assume hegemony over barbarous states if we disapprove of their barbarous conduct? I thought that the American Revolution was a refutation of such ideas, and I’ve always regarded its results as the benchmark of democracy.

As far as Iran’s nuclear program goes, the Saudis would bite our hands off if a western nation was to offer them nuclear technology, for similar reasons to Tehran – regional dominance. Such is realpolitik.

Finally, it’s amusing to note that you object to Ahmadinejad’s purge of liberals from Iranian colleges, given the propensity of the American right for such notions.
