Michael Ramirez on the Congressman Mark Foley Sex FLAP

    ramireztoon100406web

The Washington Times Editorial: Resign, Mr. Speaker

The facts of the disgrace of Mark Foley, who was a Republican member of the House from a Florida district until he resigned last week, constitute a disgrace for every Republican member of Congress. Red flags emerged in late 2005, perhaps even earlier, in suggestive and wholly inappropriate e-mail messages to underage congressional pages. His aberrant, predatory — and possibly criminal — behavior was an open secret among the pages who were his prey. The evidence was strong enough long enough ago that the speaker should have relieved Mr. Foley of his committee responsibilities contingent on a full investigation to learn what had taken place, whether any laws had been violated and what action, up to and including prosecution, were warranted by the facts. This never happened.

Rep. John Shimkus of Illinois, the Republican chairman of the House Page Board, said he learned about the Foley e-mail messages “in late 2005.” Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, the leader of the Republican majority, said he was informed of the e-mail messages earlier this year. On Friday, Mr. Hastert dissembled, to put it charitably, before conceding that he, too, learned about the e-mail messages sometime earlier this year. Late yesterday afternoon, Mr. Hastert insisted that he learned of the most flagrant instant-message exchange from 2003 only last Friday, when it was reported by ABC News. This is irrelevant. The original e-mail messages were warning enough that a predator — and, incredibly, the co-chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children — could be prowling the halls of Congress. The matter wasn’t pursued aggressively. It was barely pursued at all. Moreover, all available evidence suggests that the Republican leadership did not share anything related to this matter with any Democrat.

Now the scandal must unfold on the front pages of the newspapers and on the television screens, as transcripts of lewd messages emerge and doubts are rightly raised about the forthrightness of the Republican stewards of the 109th Congress. Some Democrats are attempting to make this “a Republican scandal,” and they shouldn’t; Democrats have contributed more than their share of characters in the tawdry history of congressional sexual scandals. Sexual predators come in all shapes, sizes and partisan hues, in institutions within and without government. When predators are found they must be dealt with, forcefully and swiftly. This time the offender is a Republican, and Republicans can’t simply “get ahead” of the scandal by competing to make the most noise in calls for a full investigation. The time for that is long past.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert must do the only right thing, and resign his speakership at once. Either he was grossly negligent for not taking the red flags fully into account and ordering a swift investigation, for not even remembering the order of events leading up to last week’s revelations — or he deliberately looked the other way in hopes that a brewing scandal would simply blow away. He gave phony answers Friday to the old and ever-relevant questions of what did he know and when did he know it? Mr. Hastert has forfeited the confidence of the public and his party, and he cannot preside over the necessary coming investigation, an investigation that must examine his own inept performance.

A special, one-day congressional session should elect a successor. We nominate Rep. Henry Hyde, also of Illinois, the chairman of the House International Relations Committee whose approaching retirement ensures that he has no dog in this fight. He has a long and principled career, and is respected on both sides of the aisle. Mr. Hyde would preside over the remaining three months of the 109th Congress in a manner best suited for a full and exhaustive investigation until a new speaker for the 110th Congress is elected in January, who can assume responsibility for the investigation.

Yet there are GOP apologists like Hugh Hewitt. He is WRONG and should be ASHAMED of attempting to SPIN grossly negligent conduct by the Republican House Leadership.

But, even Hugh may be hedging.

American voters will punish the GOP in a few weeks.

    Flap does not blame them.

Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert Watch: President Bush – DON”T RESIGN, Mr. Speaker

Fox News: Bush Backs Hastert Investigation of Foley Online Messages With Male Page

Using the words “disgusted,” “disappointed” and “dismayed” to describe his reaction to reports that former Rep. Mark Foley exchanged inappropriate e-mails with a congressional page, Bush stood by the speaker as he launches a probe of the matter.

“I know Denny Hastert. I meet with him a lot. He is a father, teacher, coach; he cares about the children of this country. I know that he wants all the facts to come out,” Bush said. “I’m confident he will provide whatever leadership he can to law enforcement in this investigation … This investigation should be thorough and any violation of the law should be prosecuted.”

The president’s support came after a newspaper editorial board and a leading conservative critic called on Hastert to resign from his leadership post over his handling of the Foley matter.

Hastert’s spokesman said Tuesday the speaker is going nowhere.

“The speaker has and will lead the Republican conference to another majority in the 110th Congress,” Hastert spokesman Ron Bonjean said.

The Speaker and the President just don’t GET IT.

American voters will punish the GOP unless there is a quick adjudication of this matter.

The Speaker has been GROSSLY NEGLIGENT in his duties.

    Flap agrees with Richard Viguerie:

Added Richard Viguerie, chairman of ConservativeHQ.com: “Anyone who covers up such behavior should have the full wrath of the authorities and of the public fall upon them as they are the enablers who made it possible.

“This isn’t an isolated situation. It is only the most recent example of Republican House leaders doing whatever it takes to hold onto power. If it means spending billions of taxpayers’ dollars on questionable projects, they’ll do it. If it means covering up the most despicable actions of a colleague, they’ll do it,” Viguerie said in a statement.

Allah has Hastert’s intransigence and obstinance on the Rush Limbaugh show here.

Hugh Hewitt and La Shawn both have it WRONG (La Shawn only partly). Sorry, but, Positive Spin-doctoring just does NOT cut it.

Captain Ed has it partly RIGHT.

Hastert and his leadership team MUST resign or the voters WILL PUNISH the GOP in the coming elections.

    The choice is clear…….

Global War on Terror Watch: Bill Frist on Fox News

Graphic Courtesy of Ace and Slublog.

Flap just heard Bill Frist on Fox News and he reiterated most of his statement from yesterday.

Frist is more pre-occupied with winning the “HEARTS and MINDS” of Afghan farmers who might become Taliban than supporting our troops in killing terrorists.

    MORON

    Flap agrees with Robert Spencer:

Without knowing anything about the nature and goals of the global jihad, you can’t possibly know what success even is in this conflict.

Bill Frist just needs to shut up and retire from public life………

North Korea Watch: North Korea Will Conduct a Nuclear Test

    northkoreakimjongilweb

Reuters: North Korea says will conduct nuclear test

An increasingly isolated North Korea said on Tuesday it would conduct its first-ever nuclear test, blaming a U.S. “threat of nuclear war and sanctions” for forcing its hand.

The statement by North Korea’s foreign ministry, carried on the official KCNA news agency, was condemned by neighboring Japan as “unacceptable” and caused South Korea to increase its security alert.

The announcement confirms weeks of rumors the communist state was planning a test and came amid increasingly sour relations with the outside world after it test-fired missiles in July.

“The U.S. extreme threat of a nuclear war and sanctions and pressure compel the DPRK (North Korea) to conduct a nuclear test, an essential process for bolstering nuclear deterrent, as a corresponding measure for defense,” the statement said.

But it added that North Korea would never use nuclear weapons first and would “do its utmost to realize the denuclearization of the peninsula and give impetus to the world-wide nuclear disarmament and the ultimate elimination of nuclear weapons.”

YAWN….bluster and threats from Kim Jong-Il.

China and Pyongyang are poking the United States in the eye prior to the November elections.

United Nations ambassador John Bolton calls for a UNSC response.

Diplomatic efforts will be fruitless as the United States bolsters its missile defense and militarizes Japan.

    Stay tuned……

Guantanamo Bay Watch: The Inside Story Part 2

In this image reviewed by the U.S. Military, an unidentified detainee is escorted by two military guards at Camp Delta, in this June 25, 2005 file photo, at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, in Cuba.

Patterico has part two of his series on Guantanamo Bay: Stashiu Arrives at GTMO and Describes the Terrorists).

    Read it all…..

I’ll end this part of the interview with a question I consider critical. Does the enemy think they are going to win this war?

Stashiu gave me a detailed answer, but made it clear that it is his opinion — not a statement of the beliefs of the detainees with whom he has spoken. Still, since he has talked to the detainees for hours, it is probably worth paying attention to his opinion. Stashiu’s view is this:

In my opinion, most of them are sincere in their belief they will win for the following reasons:

    a. They are told they are assured of victory by their religion. They are raised with the belief that Islam is destined to become the dominant way of life for this planet. No matter how long it takes, it is inevitable. Once Islam is supreme, there will be no war, crime, poverty, or need. These are frequent talking points every Friday in the mosques.

    b. Their leaders consistently stress that jihad is working and our culture is a hollow shell. They point to VietNam, Somalia, 9/11, Madrid (both the bombings and the elections immediately following), and the anti-war propagandists here in the United States. . . . The jihadists are constantly told that America is weak-willed and will turn and run if they can be inflicted with enough damage and peace can be delayed long enough.

    c. They believe they are more committed to victory at any cost because it is all in God’s name and is the Will of God. They point to our efforts at minimizing both our own casualties and those of civilians. You never see them worry about collateral damage and destroying infrastructure. They see our compassion as weakness and our integrity as blindness to reality.

The reader wonders why the military is going to such grreat lengths to protect and coddle enemy/terrorist combatants at Guananamo Bay.

What would have been done during the old days of WWII and/or the Cold War?

    Rendition, Torture, Interrogation and Termination?

Likely, in a number of cases. Secret rendition/imprisonment in others.

And what do these folks do to Americans when captured/kidnapped?

Torture, Interrogation and Termination (by cutting their heads off).

Why is the United States bothering at Gitmo?

Iran Nuclear Watch: France Should Lead Uranium Enrichment for Iran?

Update: France Rejects Iranian Nuclear Proposal

AFP: France rejects Iranian nuclear proposal

France has rejected a proposal from Iran to set up a consortium to produce enriched uranium on Iranian soil as a way out of the international impasse over Tehran’s suspect nuclear programme.

“There is a channel of dialogue with the Iranians” that must pass through EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, a spokesman for the French foreign ministry said Tuesday.

“It’s through this channel we await a response from the Iranians on the suspension” of uranium enrichment, as demanded by the UN Security Council, spokesman Jean-Baptiste Mattei told reporters.

He said the Iranian proposal, made on French radio earlier Tuesday by the deputy director of Iran’s Atomic Energy Agency, Mohammad Saeedi, was “unexpected”.

If the Iranians agreed to suspend uranium enrichment, Mattei said, “there could be place for negotiations where each side can make whatever proposals it wishes.”

    Well, maybe they have……..

    irannukeoctober3aweb

This file photo made available Tuesday Oct. 3, 2006 by the nuclear manufacturer state-controlled Areva shows the uranium enriching plant of PierrelatTe, in central France. A top Iranian nuclear official proposed Tuesday Oct. 3, 2006 that France create a consortium to enrich Iran’s uranium, in a bid to satisfy the international community’s demands for outside oversight of Tehran’s nuclear program.

AFP: Iran offers French nuclear role amid sanctions threat

Iran has suggested France should lead a consortium to produce enriched uranium on Iranian soil, in a new attempt to ward off the threat of sanctions over its nuclear ambitions.

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, who has been leading talks aimed at persuading Iran to suspend the sensitive nuclear activity, described such French monitoring as “interesting” Tuesday but in need of further examination.

The proposal comes after a new warning from US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Iran would automatically be hauled before the UN Security Council for possible sanctions if it does not suspend enrichment.

“The best solution to dispel the worries about Iran’s nuclear activities is not to demand a suspension” of enrichment, the deputy head of Iran’s atomic energy organisation, Mohammad Saeedi, told AFP.

“We have an idea that technically and legally is the best solution.

“It is that France creates a consortium with Eurodif and Areva to carry out enrichment in Iran and thus they can closely monitor our nuclear programme,” he added, referring to France’s enrichment specialist and its parent company.

    More Iranian STALLING.

YET another proposal to discuss and negotiate. Old and PATHETIC these proposals/initiatives are.

Refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council and get on with it…….
