Representative William Jefferson Watch: Jefferson Wins 9th Term in Congress
Congressman William Jefferson D-New Orleans, left with his wife Andrea Jefferson shakes hands at his victory party in New Orleans Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006. Jefferson defeated democratic State Representative Karen Carter for re-election.
UPI: Rep. William Jefferson wins 9th term
Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., who gained notoriety after the FBI found $90,000 in his freezer, was elected Saturday to a ninth term in Congress.
Jefferson defeated Democratic state Rep. Karen Carter in a runoff — even though Carter had secured all the major endorsements and had a better funded campaign, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.
Jefferson secured a majority of the votes in black neighborhoods in New Orleans and also won in Jefferson Parish, where Sheriff Harry Lee campaigned against him.
What a JOKE!
Flap can hardly wait for the indictment and trial.
Karen Carter should keep her campaign posters handy. She will be running again soon.
Louisiana has a non-partisan system in which the two top candidates in the general election face each other in a runoff if no one wins more than 50 percent of the vote.
Jefferson won 30 percent of the vote in the first election, more than any of the dozen or so candidates seeking to unseat him. Most political observers speculated that the anti-Jefferson forces would unite behind Carter, giving her an easy win.
The congressman remains the target of a federal investigation for allegedly taking payoffs. Alleged co-conspirators have pleaded guilty, and Jefferson has said he expects to be indicted.
Stay tuned…….

Mitt Romney Watch: Gay Marriage FLAP – Redux
Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney speaks at a rally in front of the Statehouse in Boston, Sunday, Nov., 19, 2006, to force the Legislature to vote on a proposed ballot question that would end gay marriage in Massachusetts. ‘The issue before us today is whether 109 legislators will follow the constitution,’ he said Sunday. ‘Let us not see the state, which first established constitutional democracy, become the first to abandon it.’
New York Times: Romney’s Gay Rights Stance Draws Ire
Gov. Mitt Romney, the Massachusetts Republican who has built a presidential campaign on a broad appeal for conservative support, is drawing sharply increased criticism from conservative activists for his advocacy of gay rights in a 1994 letter.
Mr. Romney’s standing among conservatives is being hurt by a letter he sent to the Log Cabin Club of Massachusetts saying that he would be a stronger advocate for gay rights than Senator Edward M. Kennedy, his opponent in a Senate race, in a position that stands in contrast to his current role as a champion of a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
“We must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern,†Mr. Romney wrote in a detailed plea for the support of the club, a gay Republican organization.
So, what is Governor Romney’s position on Gay Marriage. Is it evolving, like his previous pro-choice position on abortion?
Romney needs to clarify his stacne soon or appear disingenuous and pandering at best or HYPOCRITICAL at worst.
Power Line says Romney has nothing about which to be embarassed on gay rights/marriage.
Perhaps Romney has that explanation, but at the moment, it seems more likely that he’s sensing the political winds and following those rather than any deeply-held principles on the subject. That places him at a disadvantage against Giuliani, who has never felt the need to modify his positions for political gain. It’s the difference between politicians and leaders, and even though Giuliani might hold many of the same positions as the 1994 Romney, he will have fewer problems from it.
Flap says it is another nail in Romney’s presidential coffin – besides his low poll numbers.

Zalmay Khalilzad Watch: New United States Ambassador for the United Nations?
U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad speaks during an interview with The Associated Press at the U.S. Embassy in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, Iraq in this Sunday, May 21, 2006 file photo.
Robert Novak: Bolton’s successor
Zalmay Khalilzad, who was announced this week as leaving as U.S. ambassador to Iraq, is the leading prospect to replace John Bolton as envoy to the United Nations.
President Bush was reported by aides as looking for someone who approximates Bolton’s combination of toughness and diplomatic skill and has tentatively decided on Khalilzad. A native of Afghanistan, he has served in government posts dating back to 1985 and is the highest-ranking Muslim in the Bush administration.
A sound choice and definitely the President’s man.
Stay tuned for the announcement tomorrow or Monday.

Iran Nuclear Watch: Iran Expands Uranium Enrichment – AGAIN
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad waves as he walks with Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh (2nd L) during their meeting in Tehran December 9, 2006.
AP: Iran Expands Uranium Enrichment Program
Iran has begun installing 3,000 centrifuges in an expansion of its uranium enrichment program that brings the Islamic nation significantly closer to large-scale production of nuclear fuel, the president said Saturday.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also claimed that the international community was caving in to Tehran’s demands to continue its nuclear program.
“Resistance of the Iranian nation in the past year forced them to retreat tens of steps over the Iran’s nuclear issue,” the semi-official Fars agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying. Fars is considered to be close to Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards.
Ahmadinejad is playing the Western media cycle again. He knows the feckless EU and United States is ready to circulate a revised United Nations Security Council sanction resolution to the Russia and China for their veto approval. He is now boasting that Iran is expanding their uranium enrichment despite the EU and despite the press accounts that Iran is having technical problems with their uranium enrichment processes.
Ahamdinejad is telling the EU to FECK OFF.
Reuters: West circulates revised UN sanctions draft on Iran
A new European resolution imposing sanctions on Iran for its nuclear ambitions eases a list of goods Tehran cannot buy or sell and exempts Russian construction and fueling of a reactor it is building in Iran.
Britain, France and Germany circulated the draft measure, obtained by Reuters, to
U.N. Security Council members on Friday and are hoping for a vote in the 15-member body by Christmas. It is uncertain whether Russia, which has veto power, will support the measure, vote “no” or abstain.
The proposed sanctions are a reaction to Iran’s failure to comply with an August 31 U.N. deadline to suspend uranium enrichment, which can produce fuel for nuclear power plants or for bombs. The West believes Iran’s enrichment work is a cover for bomb-making. Tehran says it is for generating electricity.
The text of the latest draft still bars Iran from buying and selling key nuclear materials and technology, according to an international list from the Nuclear Suppliers Group and another one from the Missile Technology Control regime on ballistic missiles.
And this is also Iran’s response to the Iraq Study Group report. The response:
America is WEAK.
But, Israel will NOT take to these Iranian machinations lightly.
JPost: Olmert not ruling out attack on Iran
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, in an interview scheduled for publication on Sunday, told Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine that he could not rule out the possibility of a military attack against Iran, and called for the international community to step up action against Teheran.
Olmert called Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s repeated threats to destroy Israel “absolutely criminal,” and said that he expected “more dramatic steps to be taken.”
The “POINT OF NO RETURN” is fast approaching and…….
There is a MILITARY OPTION – it will soon be executed.
Stay tuned…….
