Sandy Berger Watch: Inspector General – Berger Hid National Archive Classified Documents Under a Construction Trailer
AP: Report Says Berger Hid Archive Documents
President Clinton’s national security adviser removed classified documents from the National Archives, hid them under a construction trailer and later tried to find the trash collector to retrieve them, the agency’s internal watchdog said Wednesday.
The report was issued more than a year after Sandy Berger pleaded guilty and received a criminal sentence for removing the documents.
Berger took the documents in the fall of 2003 while working to prepare himself and Clinton administration witnesses for testimony to the Sept. 11 commission. Berger was authorized as the Clinton administration’s representative to make sure the commission got the correct classified materials.
Berger’s lawyer, Lanny Breuer, said in a statement that the contents of all the documents exist today and were made available to the commission.
But Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., outgoing chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, said he’s not convinced that the Archives can account for all the documents taken by Berger. Davis said working papers of National Security Council staff members are not inventoried by the Archives.
“There is absolutely no way to determine if Berger swiped any of these original documents. Consequently, there is no way to ever know if the 9/11 Commission received all required materials,†Davis said.
This former National Security Advisor for President Clinton should be barred from ever dealing with classified documents again. Three years was NOT long enough of a ban.

Cox & Forkum: Half-baked
Cox & Forkum: Half-baked
The Washington Times: Holiday pies won’t fly this year by Audrey Hudson.
Airline travelers carrying aboard potential explosives — holiday desserts containing more than 3 ounces of liquid — are being encouraged by Homeland Security officials to find other means of transportation for the goodies.”These items are permitted but may require further inspection. Keep in mind that many holiday foods like cake and pie have characteristics similar to liquids, gels and aerosols,” listed one travel tip released yesterday by the Transportation Security Administration.
“If you are not sure if an item is a liquid, gel or aerosol it is best to pack the item in your checked bag or ship it to your destination in advance,” says the travel guide.
Amy Kudwa, a spokeswoman for the TSA, will discuss the holiday travel checklist with reporters at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport today and demonstrate common holiday travel mistakes.
One air marshal said screening holiday pies is a “half-baked idea.”
“That’s outrageous; people would have gooey pumpkin pie leaking all over their luggage,” said one airport security official.
And what about the Fruit Cake???

Michael Ramirez on Iraq War Vietnamization
Gates to Report on Iraq to Bush This Weekend
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Friday that he hopes to give a report to President Bush this weekend on what he learned during his three days of meetings with military and political leaders here.
Gates declined to say whether he plans to recommend a short-term increase in U.S. troop levels. But he said he believes the U.S. and Iraqis have “a broad strategic agreement between the Iraqi military and Iraqi government and our military.”
The Iraq War is NOT the Vietnam War – as long as the American people do not allow the enemy to make us think it is.

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Michael Barone – Giuliani is a Front-Runner
Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani gestures while speaking during the Riga Conference, on the sidelines of a NATO summit, at Blackheads House in Riga, Tuesday Nov. 28, 2006.
Michael Barone (via Hugh Hewitt): Polls for the Republican Nomination
Pollster.com has an interesting summary of the poll standings for the Republican nomination in 2008. It makes the point, largely overlooked by political writers of all stripes, that Rudy Giuliani has been leading John McCain in the large majority of polls, albeit usually by narrow margins. Political writers seem to be assuming that Giuliani can’t win the Republican nomination because of his liberal stands on cultural issues. I have disagreed for some time. Yes, Giuliani’s stands on these issues are a liability in Republican primaries. But they could be trumped by the very strong positive feelings people have had about his performance on and after September 11.
That’s what talk show host and law professor Hugh Hewitt found when he polled an audience of Republican women in Temecula, Calif., back in 2005. Hewitt asked one of the women why she could support Giuliani when he disagreed with her on cultural issues.
“All that won’t matter if we’re attacked,” she said. “Rudy will keep us safe.”
The polling evidence suggests she’s not alone. McCain is often described as the front-runner for the Republican nomination. I think it’s more accurate to call him a front-runner and to acknowledge that Giuliani is a front-runner too.
Absolutely.
This is a two man race between Giluiani and McCain. Clearly, Giuliani has the better favorability ratings and has been polling better than McCain against Hillary Clinton, the apparent Democrat nominee.
The GOP Presidential primary season may be long and protracted depending upon the June California Primary – unless it is moved to March. If Giuliani avoids an early GAFFE California and the Republican nomination are his.
UPDATE: Byron York at National Review has a summary of the latest KCCI Poll:
John McCain 27%
Rudy Giuliani 26%
Mitt Romney 9%
Newt Gingrich 7%
Condi Rice 4%
George Pataki 1%
Jeb Bush 1%
George Allen 1%
Sam Brownback 1%Stay tuned……

Iran Nuclear Watch: United Nations Poised to Pass Sanctions Despite Iran Threat
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, seen here on 15 December 2006, vowed that nothing would stop Iran pushing ahead with its nuclear programme, as world powers prepared for a likely vote that could slap UN sanctions against Tehran.
Guardian: UN poised to pass Iran sanctions despite threat
Ahmadinejad warns of immediate retaliation and US and Britain step up naval presence in Gulf
The United Nations security council is finally expected to pass a resolution today to impose international sanctions on Iran for the first time since the 1979 revolution, a punitive move that will heighten diplomatic tensions and risks a military confrontation in the Gulf.
Iran has threatened immediate retaliation, even though the proposed sanctions have been significantly watered down this week. Tehran’s options include withdrawal from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog, which would mean Iran would conduct its nuclear programme free from international monitoring, and possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the channel for 20% of the world’s oil supplies.
So, what are Ahmadinejad and the Iranian Mullahs to do?
Likely, they will with draw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). But, the IAEA inspections have been a sham and worthless in any case. Therefore, what is the big deal?
Will Iran provoke a military conflict?
Possible, but the United States is ready.
The USS Enterprise and USS Dwight David Eisenhower
Western diplomats think that the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and his colleagues are bluffing but, just in case, the US announced this week it is reinforcing its fleet in the Gulf.
The British government is also increasing its naval presence. Two minehunters arrived in Bahrain on Tuesday but the Ministry of Defence said their deployment was mainly for training with Gulf states and “not to counter any increased threat”. Tony Blair, on a visit to the Middle East this week, portrayed Iran as a major threat.
It is doubtful that Iran will provoke a fight with the West. If Iran were try to block the Strait of Hormuz the Professor Herman scenario would likely be initiated.
And what is next?
More bloviations from Iran – of course.
Ayatollah Ahmad Janati attends Friday prayer in Tehran in July 2006. Iran has played down a pending UN Security Council resolution that could lead to sanctions over its nuclear programme, insisting that the Islamic republic will resist to the end
AFP: Iran says UN resolution will not halt nuclear drive
Iran has played down a pending UN Security Council resolution that could lead to sanctions over its nuclear programme, insisting that the Islamic republic will resist to the end.
“We should tell foreign enemies that this is the Iranian nation, whether you adopt a resolution or whatever hostile act… our people will withstand it,” senior cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Janati said in a Friday prayer sermon in Tehran carried live on state radio.
“Our people will resist and stand tall to the end,” Janati said as major powers worked in New York on reaching a Security Council consensus over a European draft resolution mandating UN nuclear-related sanctions against Iran.
Stay tuned for this afternoon’s vote in the United Nations…….or Saturday.
