Giuliani Notes: Rudy Wins New Jersey GOP Straw Poll

    giulianioctober4aweb

Middlesex GOP backs Guiliani, picks slates for state, county offices

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani got 67 percent of the vote today in a straw poll of 14 potential Republican presidential candidates conducted by the Middlesex County Republican Organization.

Guiliani got 151 votes from ballots cast by 224 GOP party workers and officials who gathered in Edison for the annual convention to decide who gets the party line in the June primary.

County Chairman Joseph Leo said the straw poll was an attempt to gauge the party’s preference in next year’s presidential campaign. U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) placed second with 22 votes and Massachusettes Gov. Mitt Romney was third with 14 votes. The other candidates each got a handful of votes.

The race for New Jersey’s GOP Presidential delegates appears to be over, if this is any indication.

And with New Jersey holding its Presidential Primary election on Super Duper Tuesday, February 5th, it may be another state that solidifies Rudy’s nomination on this date.

Iran Watch: Feckless Brits Seek Deal With Iran

    iranmarch312007jweb

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad(C) leaves the Friday prayers at Tehran university, 30 March 2007. Ahmadinejad again called for Britain to apologise for its sailors entering Iranian waters, the state news agency IRNA reported.

    Ahmadinejad Calls U.K., Allies Arrogant

Iran’s hardline president said Saturday that Britain and its allies were “arrogant and selfish” for not apologizing over what he called the incursion of 15 captured British sailors and marines into Iranian waters.

President Bush described the 15 Britons as “hostages” in his first comments on the capture and said their seizure was “inexcusable,” calling for their release.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s most extensive comments on the crisis closely followed tough talk from other Iranian officials, an indication that Tehran’s position could be hardening.

Britain, meanwhile, appeared to be easing its stance, emphasizing its desire to talk with Iran about what it termed a regrettable situation.

“We continue to express our willingness to engage in dialogue and discussions with Iran,” Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said at a European Union summit in Bremen, Germany. I think everyone regrets that this position has arisen … What we want is a way out of it.”

    Iran appeared unreceptive.

Of course, Iran will be unreceptive of the feckless Brits. Britain has shown itself to be WEAK. So, Iran will take advantage. Iran will want more.

Remember when President Ronald Reagan made the statement of “PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH” an American foreign policy standard?

Tony Blair and the British have made “negotiate and beg” their national foreign policy standard.

The Brits need to show some backbone and intestinal fortitude or become subservient Dhimmis to the great Caliphate of Iran.

    iranmarch312007iweb

U.S. President George W. Bush answers a question during a joint news conference with Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at Camp David in Maryland March 31, 2007. Bush said on Saturday that Iran’s detention of 15 British sailors and marines was inexcusable and called on Tehran to release “the hostages” immediately.

In the meantime, the British government is trying to negotiate a “DEAL” with Iran.

Ministers seek deal with Iran for captives

Ministers are preparing a compromise deal to allow Iran to save face and release its 15 British military captives by promising that the Royal Navy will never knowingly enter Iranian waters without permission.

The Sunday Telegraph has learnt of plans to send a Royal Navy captain or commodore to Teheran, as a special envoy of the Government, to deliver a public assurance that officials hope will end the diplomatic standoff.

The move, which was discussed at a meeting of Whitehall’s Cobra crisis committee yesterday, came as Downing Street officials explicitly cautioned against hopes of a speedy outcome and said that families of the hostages should prepare for the “long haul”.

    What a joke.

But, Britain can deal with Iran as it sees fit.

Iran knows that had they attacked and attempted to capture an American vessel that at the least the Americans would have fought them and that there would be no negotiations only reprisals.

Some Brits are not too happy:

Defence officials emphasised that they were not preparing to concede that the two British boats detained nine days ago were at fault. But one said: “We are quite prepared to give the Iranians a guarantee that we would never knowingly enter their waters without their permission, now or in the future.

We are not apologising, nor are we saying that we entered their waters in the first place. But it may offer a route out of the crisis.”

Details of the strategy emerged as a former Falklands War commander expressed fury at how the sailors surrendered to Iranian gunboats without a fight.

Maj Gen Julian Thompson called for a review of the Navy’s rules of engagement, dictated by the United Nations, that they cannot open fire unless they are shot at first. “In my view this thing is a complete cock-up,” he said.

“I want to know why the Marines didn’t open fire or put up some sort of fight. My fear is that they didn’t have the right rules of engagement, which would allow them to do this.”

This photo released by the Ministry of Defence shows the HMS Cornwall on station in the Gulf. More people in Britain oppose military action than support it to end the standoff over Iran’s capture of 15 British military personnel in the Gulf, a poll published at the weekend said.

Michael Ramirez on Senator James Webb and the Gun

    ramireztoon032907web

Webb Is Vague About Gun Incident

U.S. Sen. James Webb expressed support yesterday for a top aide caught with a handgun in a Senate office building but shed little light on his role in what he described as an “unfortunate” situation.

Webb (D-Va.) declined to confirm what the aide, Phillip Thompson, told authorities after he was taken into custody on Monday: that the gun belongs to the senator and that he was “safekeeping” it for him. Webb said that a mix-up was to blame for the episode but that he could not provide details because Thompson faces criminal charges.

“I think this is one of those very unfortunate situations where, completely inadvertently, he took the weapon into the Senate yesterday,” Webb said. Beyond that, Webb provided little information, never saying whether the gun is his.

“I have never carried a gun in the Capitol complex, and I did not give the weapon to Phillip Thompson, and that’s all that I think I’ll say,” Webb said during a news conference at the U.S. Capitol.

So, Senator, you have no knowledge that your aide carries a gun?

There is more to this story.

Giuliani Notes: Rudy in Salt Lake City

    giulianimarch31aweb

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani arrives at a fundraising event Friday, March 30, 2007, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Giuliani is scheduled to fly to Florida tonight for fund raising events there Saturday.

    Giuliani rakes in Utah donations

GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani said Friday his record as mayor of New York City proves he’s not too liberal for Utah voters — and that he may be the toughest candidate in the war on terrorism.

Giuliani, who arrived in Utah midday and left shortly after collecting as much as $250,000 at an early evening fund-raiser at the Federal Heights home of former Salt Lake County Council member Steve Harmsen, was careful not to criticize the other Republicans in the race.

Especially not Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who is widely seen as the favorite to win Utah in 2008. Not only did Romney turn around the scandal-tainted 2002 Winter Olympics, he’s also a Mormon like the majority of Utahns.
“I like Mitt very much. I think Mitt was a really good governor. I campaigned for him,” Giuliani told local reporters, adding that Republicans have “got a really big challenge ahead of us next year making sure a Democrat stays out of the White House.”

During the 10 minutes or so he spent fielding questions, Giuliani repeatedly touted his experience as mayor of New York City during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that made him a hero in the eyes of many, heralded as “America’s mayor.”

He talked tough on Iraq, criticizing Democrats in Congress for demanding a deadline for withdrawing troops. “What they did was irresponsible. To give your enemy a timetable to your retreat is unheard of, I think, in the history of war.”

Giuliani said Iran’s leader needs “to know that America will use its military power not because it wants to. We know it’s dangerous. We know it’s not a good thing to do. We know it’s a worse thing if he has nuclear weapons.”

The word conservative came up again and again as Giuliani described how he cleaned up crime, wiped out budget deficits and reduced taxes as mayor. On social issues, though, he acknowledged “people should know we’re going to have some differences.”

Rudy is off to Florida today and will speak before the Club for Growth. Rumors have been flying around the net for weeks that the Club for Growth will endorse Giuliani’s campaign for the presidency.

The Club for Growth speech is closed to the media as Flap understands. But, I’ll watch out for any bootleg audio/video views of the meeting.

Iran Watch: British Sailors May Be Tried By Iran

AP: Iranian official: Sailors may be tried

Iran’s ambassador to Russia renewed a threat Iranian officials made earlier this week, saying 15 British sailors held by Iran could be tried for violating international law, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported Saturday.

Gholam-Reza Ansari told Russian television Vesti-24 on Friday that Iran had launched a legal investigation of the British sailors. “They will be tried if there is enough evidence of guilt,” Ansari was quoted by IRNA as saying.

Britain’s Foreign Office said it was checking the claim that the sailors were facing trial, but noted that the ambassador’s comments didn’t alter their view of what was needed to resolve the standoff.

“This doesn’t change our position, we have made it perfectly clear that our personnel were in Iraqi waters and we continue to request immediate consular access to them and their immediate release,” said a spokeswoman for Britain’s Foreign Office, speaking on customary condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

Flap’s best intuition tells him that Britain and the United States are planning a military operation to damage Iran with concomitant back channel negotiations to avoid any loss of life.  And Britain must make sure any response does not provoke riots in the UK’s Muslim communities.

    But……

It is awfully quiet out there.

And where is big mouth Iran President Ahmadinejad?

    iranmarch312007aweb

An image taken from Iranian television Friday March 30, 2007 showing three British service personnel, at left a serviceman whose name was given in Farsi as Nathan Thomas Summers, Faye Turney, 26, the only woman amongst the British navy personnel, centre, and a man believed to be Adam Sperry, some of the British personnel being held captive by Iran. A newscaster earlier on Al-Alam television said the taped confession would show a British marine explaining how he and his colleagues entered Iranian waters ‘in an illegal way.’

On the other hand, it may be that Britain is not capable militarily or lacks the will to get their sailors back.

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Rudy 36% McCain 20% Thompson 9% Gingrich 6% Romney 6% in Latest Fox News Poll

    giulianimarch30bweb

Polling Data from Real Clear Politics

FOX News Poll: Most Think Democrats Will Win White House in 2008

Among Republicans, Giuliani still tops the list with 36 percent to McCain’s 20 percent. Thompson takes over the third place slot with 9 percent, moving former Speaker Newt Gingrich down to fourth place at 6 percent. Former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney also receives the backing of 6 percent.

In a two-way matchup, Giuliani’s strong lead over McCain subsided this month, though he still has a double-digit edge: 50 percent to 37 percent (among Republicans). Last month, Giuliani led with 56 percent to McCain’s 31 percent.

The poll also asked which Republican candidate was most like former President Ronald Reagan — a Republican icon that many of the candidates compare themselves to on the campaign trail. Giuliani gets top billing here too, as 18 percent of Republicans say “America’s Mayor” most reminds them of Reagan, 12 percent say McCain, 10 percent Fred Thompson, 6 percent Gingrich and 4 percent Romney. Fourteen percent say none of the candidates is like Reagan.

    In the general election match-ups:

Giuliani tops Clinton by only 1 point — 45 percent to 44 percent. Last month Giuliani had a 9-point edge (49 percent to 40 percent).

In addition, in a three-way race with current New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg as an independent, Clinton takes a slim lead over Giuliani (42 percent to 40 percent), with Bloomberg at 6 percent.

Obama now ties Giuliani at 43 percent. In mid-February, Obama (39 percent) trailed Giuliani (45 percent) by 6 points.

The race is also sharply divided between Clinton (43 percent) and McCain (47 percent), and she easily tops potential contender Fred Thompson by 51 percent to 34 percent.

    The poll is here.

In this first poll with Fred Thompson, there is a little Giuliani slippage but not much. McCain and Romney continue to lag far behind.

So, will the race take a change with Fred Thompson and Rudy being the top GOP two?

Possibly, but not if Thompson continues to lag in head to head polls with Hillary.

Ominously, Fox News reports by 67 percent to 22 percent, American voters think the Democrats are going to win the 2008 presidential election.

    Not good……..

Giuliani Notes: Rudy’s Wife Won’t be a Cabinet Member

    giulianimarch30aweb

n this undated handout photo provided by ABC, Barbara Walters, right, poses with Judith Giuliani, left, and her husband, presidential hopeful and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. during an interview in New York. Giuliani says if elected, he’d be open to his wife attending Cabinet meetings on issues in which she’s interested. He described his wife as a close adviser who has as much involvement in his campaign as she wants. The interview will air, Friday, March 30, 2007 on ABC News’ ’20/20′.

AP: Giuliani: Wife won’t be Cabinet member

Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani said Friday his wife will not be a member of his Cabinet or attend most high-level meetings as he sought to clarify his previous statements suggesting she would play a significant role in his administration.

Giuliani, in interview comments released Thursday, had said he’d be open to his wife attending Cabinet meetings on issues in which she’s interested. “If she wanted to. If they were relevant to something that she was interested in. I mean that would be something that I’d be very, very comfortable with,” Giuliani told Barbara Walters on ABC News’ “20/20.”

Late Friday, the Giuliani campaign issued a statement in which the former New York City mayor suggested that would not be the case.

Of course, no one really expected Rudy’s wife to be a policy wonk like Hillary Clinton during Bill’s presidency.

Rudy was simply deferring to his wife and being polite in a joint interview with Barbara Wa Wa.

    But, was this a gaffe?

    Somewhat…….

    Here is the clarification:

“Judith and I got a good laugh after we heard that she would be a member of the Cabinet, especially after she made it clear in the interview with Barbara Walters that she is not particularly interested in politics or policy,” he said. “Like most couples, we rely on each other and support each other, but we have different interests. My interest is in politics and deciding policy. Judith is a nurse. Her interest is in educating people on how to stay healthy.”

“Obviously, she will not be a Cabinet member or attend most Cabinet meetings — if any. But she will pursue a campaign to educate Americans on preventing illness and promoting overall health.”

    Obvious to Flap.

But, it is good and quick politics to issue the correction/clarification.

Giuliani Notes: California Representative George Radanovich – An Interview

    giulianimarch30aaweb

California Congressman George Radanovich Endorses Rudy Giuliani

The Rudy Giuliani Presidential Exploratory Committee announced today that Congressman George Radanovich is supporting Mayor Giuliani for President. Congressman Radanovich’s support is just the latest in a growing list of California endorsements which includes fellow Congressional members Mary Bono, David Dreier, Jerry Lewis, Devin Nunes, and Ed Royce.

“We need a proven leader with an optimistic vision who can unite our party and our country,” said Congressman George Radanovich. “Rudy Giuliani is an experienced, decisive leader who will use the same conservative principles that led to New York City’s revitalization to tackle the difficult issues our country faces today.”

“I welcome Congressman Radanovich’s support and look forward to working together to grow our California team,” Mayor Giuliani said.

Flap had the opportunity this afternoon to interview Representative Radanovich regarding the Giuliani campaign.

George P. Radanovich is a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1995, representing the 19th District of California. The 19th District comprises all or part of the Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne Counties.

    giulianimarch30jjweb

His Congressional website is here and campaign website is here.

Flap: Congressman where are you today?

GR: I am in the Valley in between Madera and Fresno, making the rounds (of his Congressional District).

Flap: Why Rudy Giuliani? Why have you endorsed him for President?

GR: This election will be about strong leadership while we are in this War on Terror. And this will require somebody who will be strong on leadership and be very decisive. And especially to be able to retain the White House for the Republican Party. And I think that Rudy does that job.

It is not so much for me (an election) on local issues but staying strong world-wide. We cannot afford to have just anybody who will not be strong and who thinks the Iraq War is a mistake. And, I think with his 9/11 background (Rudy) puts the best face on victory in the War on Terror.

Flap: So, you would say the War on Terror and the Iraq War – issues of War and Peace trump all of the others?

GR: I think they will be the biggest issues in this campaign. And I believe that over the next few months this President is going to start standing up to this Democratic Congress especially with these war votes coming up, and frankly the American people are going to start getting back (supporting) the President on this war and I want to carry this into the next presidency.

Flap: You mentioned earlier in your comments about electability and retaining the White House. How do you feel about Rudy’s electability versus Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama?

GR: I think for that reason Rudy’s strength on national issues will and (his) attitude of what we are trying to accomplish in the world he will show be much stronger than Hillary Clinton and frankly I just don’t see Obama getting the nomination.

    giulianimarch30ccweb

Flap: Endorsements in GOP primaries are always risky. Certainly some Members of Congress do not put their necks out there and endorse in a partisan primary. Why have you decided to put your neck out and endorse Rudy over John McCain or Mitt Romney?

GR: Well, now is the time to start and with the new primary (GOP Party) rules in California, the individual districts will be able to weigh in more. (California chooses its GOP Presidential delegates based on winning a plurality in each Congressional District). So, I have the ability to hopefully influence not only delegates in my district but also surrounding Democrat districts and so the districts play a little bit more of a role in the nomination process. Plus, it is happening alot sooner than we think with the primary – and so getting in now, although it might seem a little early but is something we need to do in a timely fashion. I would support the nominee whoever it was but I think in the long run Giuliani goes the distance and I think will win in the long run. You know, if John McCain were to get the nomination or Mitt Romney or anyone else, of course, they would have my support. Just in my view, he is showing the ability to go the distance and he has got in his persona and a good face to put before the world and (to show) that we are determined to win and have victory over terror.

Flap: Lat week I interviewed Michelle Steel from the California State Board of Equalization and I asked her this question: In light of the polls showing Rudy Giuliani with a commanding lead over the GOP field, is the Presidential campaign in California is done/over? Michelle Steel said yes. Congressman, what do you say?

GR: Politics can change in a day and I do not think it is in anyone’s court at all right now. There are alot of things that can happen. Newt and Fred Thompson might enter the race and you never know what might happen with Romney or McCain -so no it is not over. There is still alot more listening by the public to do. We are a long ways from having this thing in the bag.

Flap: The Mayor has been up in your area and has campaigned up in Fresno this last month. Do you know of any plans for him to return?

GR: I know when I talked to him personally he said and this is before we knew for sure that the California Primary was going to be in February that he was going to be pretty much living in California. So, my feeling is that he will be out here quite often.

Flap: Some members of the GOP say that Giuliani is a liberal and that he doesn’t reflect the views and values of mainstream Republicans. What do you say Congressman?

GR: Like I said before the issue with national leadership on the War on Terror and cutting spending in New York City and I don’t think anybody believes he will be a tax and spend liberal.

He has satisfied me on a number of the social issues.

    1. He opposes Gay Marriage in any form.

    2. On abortion, he is on the conservative side – front and center now and does not favor Partial Birth Abortion. And he supports Parental Notification.

So, these are the issues and the fact that he is a tax-cutter not a spender. I think he fills the bill in that way.

Thank you Congressman for the interview.

Iran Watch: Iran Releases Video and Letter of Captured British Hostages

Reuters: Iran releases letter, video of captured Britons

Iran displayed three detained British naval personnel on television on Friday and released a letter from one saying she was being held because of “oppressive” British and U.S. behavior in
    Iraq.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the footage of three of the 15 British captives enhanced people’s disgust at the treatment of the sailors and marines, and risked isolating Tehran further – but he urged calm and patience over the crisis.

“I am writing to you as a British service person who has been sent to Iraq, sacrificed due to the intervening policies of the Bush and Blair governments,” said the third letter from sailor Faye Turney, released by Iran’s embassy in London.

The letter from Sailor Faye Turney:

    iranmarch302007bweb

Obviously Iran is ignoring the 1949 Third Geneva Conventions and its Article XIII regarding humiliating and degrading prisoners of war.

And why are the Brits allowing Iran to humiliate them?

This is a replay of the fecklessness of the Jimmy Carter Iran Hostage crisis of 1979 when Iran held Americans for 444 days.

Will Britain let this play out or will their be a further provocation and/or response?

Flap will repeat his recommendations to Prime Minister Blair and President Bush:

    1. Tell Iran they could keep the fifteen hostages all the time they want, even though they are violating the 1949 Third Geneva Convention Article XIII regarding humiliating and degrading prisoners of war and that those responsible in the Iranian government would be charged later with War Crimes.

    2. If Iran persisted in holding the prisoners that within one week Iran might discover that their oil refining capability, nuclear facilities, and one gasoline refinery might not work nor exist.

    3. If Iran continued to hold the prisoners, that within a week the United Kingdom and the United States would enforce a blockade of all gasoline into Iran.

    4. But, of course, if Iran simply admits they made a mistake in their GPS coordinates and expeditiously returns the fifteen prisoners, Iran might return to a mechanized society under United Nations sanctions .
