Dentistry Today: Dentistry from a Garage

A Florida man was held Wednesday, April 25, 2007 on charges that he performed dental work on customers without a license in his “filthy” garage, authorities said.

Man Accused of Dental Work in Garage

A man was held Wednesday on charges that he performed dental work on customers without a license in his “filthy” garage, authorities said. Roger Bean, 60, was arrested Tuesday and held on $6,000 bond.

Bean performed denture fittings and made false teeth in his garage, charging just $200 for a full set of dentures, a procedure that typically costs more than $2,000, authorities said. But he was not licensed to practice in Florida.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s detective Don Zumpano said there were “health risks with operating this type of facility outside of your house,” adding that Bean’s workspace was “filthy.”

Neighbors and clients, however, praised Bean for saving them thousands of dollars.

Ron St. Mary, 73, head of the neighborhood crime watch, said Bean is no criminal.

“He’s helping the old people who don’t have a few dollars,” he said. “I think the world of him.”

Oh Please……… there is plenty of financial assistance both governmental and private to help any old or infirm patient receive some basic dental care, including complete dentures.

There are denture clinics which are very inexpensive as well.

And, they have clean facilities.

But, at least the United States has not “progessed” like the UK. This poor chap had to do it himself.

He was not helping people but practicing a healing art without proper training and/or licensing. This is against the law and is not ridiculous. It protects the public.

And it does not cost more than $2,000.00 for a complete set of dentures. In fact, in some denture clinics the cost is less than $500.00.

And if you have good credit, there is financing available.

Flap suggests you do some investigation before you make wild and unsubstantiated statements.

This guy was violating the law and should be punished accordingly.

If you want to practice detnistry, go to school, license up and set up shop.
