Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton speaks to supporters Sunday, May 6, 2007, during a campaign stop in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Gingrich: Clinton looks ‘foolish’ on Iraq

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich Sunday said Sen. Hillary Clinton’s call for repealing congressional authority for the Iraq war “made her look foolish.”

“Well, I think, quite frankly, it made her look foolish,” Gingrich told host Bob Schieffer on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” If she honestly believed that we should get out of Iraq, vote no on the funding. The Congress has every authority under the Constitution to force the president out of Iraq.”

Clinton, D-N.Y., last week said and Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., would introduce legislation to end authority for the war in Iraq, proposing Oct. 11, 2007, as the expiration date for the congressional resolution approved Oct. 11, 2002.

Gingrich said Clinton’s proposal was “essentially an effort by Senator Clinton to appease her left who are very angry at her for, you know, not having gone back on her vote on the war.”

Yes, Newt has it RIGHT. Hillary is “SUCKING UP” to the Left who wants her to apologize for voting to authorize the war.

    NO GUTS NO GLORY, Hillary…….

France Watch: Nicolas Sarkozy Elected President

    sarkozymay6aweb

President elect Nicolas Sarkozy gives thumbs up after leaving his campaign headquarters in Paris, Sunday May 6, 2007. French voters elected reform-minded Nicolas Sarkozy as their new president on Sunday, giving him a comfortable winning margin, preliminary official results and projections from four polling agencies showed. With more than half of the vote counted, Sarkozy was scoring just over 53 percent to a little more than 46 percent for Socialist Segolene Royal. Polling agencies also had the conservative Sarkozy winning 53 percent of the vote compared to 47 for Royal amid massive turnout of 85 percent.

    Sarkozy wins French presidency

Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy won the French presidency by a comfortable margin Sunday and immediately signalled his victory would mean friendly relations with the United States.

His socialist opponent, Segolene Royal, conceded defeat for her hopes of becoming France’s first woman president. With nearly 70 percent of ballots counted, Sarkozy had just over 53 percent of the vote, according to the Interior Ministry.

Washington can “count on our friendship,” Sarkozy told hundreds of cheering supporters, though he added that “friendship means accepting that friends can have different opinions.”

President Bush swiftly phoned the new president-elect to offer congratulations.

“The United States and France are historic allies and partners. President Bush looks forward to working with President-elect Sarkozy as we continue our strong alliance,” said Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the White House National Security Council.

Better for France and the United States?

    We will see…….

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Can Rudy Overcome Pro-Choice Abortion Stand?

    giulianimay6aweb

Former New York Mayor and Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani is hooded by Associate Provost Isaac Metts, right, after he was awarded the honorary degrees of Doctor of Public Administration during the commencement ceremony at the Citadel Saturday, May 5, 2007, in Charleston, S.C.

Washington Post: Can Giuliani Overcome Abortion Stand?

Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani may be able to overcome his support for abortion rights with primary voters who oppose abortion, GOP lawmakers said Sunday.

“I think it’s an uphill fight on that issue,” House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said. “But I think a lot of Republican voters see Rudy Giuliani as competent and able to do the job.”

Rep. Tom Tancredo, agreed it is possible for Giuliani to win the nomination.

“Because one of the things that happens, of course, is that Republicans start looking at alternatives and saying, `Oh my gosh, even if Mayor Giuliani is a pro-choice, or at least a flip-flop, candidate on this issue, maybe he will appoint strict constructionists and that sort of thing,” Tancredo said.

“And God knows we don’t want the alternative, being whoever the Democrats have in place,” Tancredo said.

Boehner was on “Fox News Sunday,” while Tancredo appeared on “This Week” on ABC.

The fact is the Mayor’s position on abortion and federal funding of abortion has been so miscontrued/twisted/spun that no voter absolutely understands the Mayor’s position. And Hizzonder did not help himself out this week in the debate by saying:

In a GOP debate last week, Giuliani said “it would be OK” if the Supreme Court upholds Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision legalizing abortion. “It would be OK to repeal it. It would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as precedent,” Giuliani said.

What the Mayor was attempting to say in a nutshell was that the issue of Roe v. Wade and abortion is for the Supreme Court to decide not the President.

However, as President he feels the issue/choice of abortion is best left between the woman and her doctor within certain restrictions as determined by each state.

Moreover, he supports the Hyde amendment which limits federal funding for abortion.

He opposes partial birth abortion and the recent ruling of the Supreme Court limiting/outlawing it.

Also, the Mayor should have emphasized that he has NO litmus tests on the issue of abortion for new appointments to the Supreme Court.

Can Rudy be nominated by the GOP with a pro-choice position on abortion?

The answer is YES and others in the GOP agree, if he adequately states his mainstream position on this issue.

    Fred Thompson Watch: Like McCain?

Fred Thompson speaks before the Orange County, California Lincoln Club

    Thompson’s Politics Much Like McCain’s

Fred Thompson fervently backed the Iraq war, railed against an expanding federal government, took stands that occasionally annoyed his party and rarely spoke about his views on social issues during his tenure as a senator from Tennessee or in his writings and speeches since leaving office.

In short, the man some in the GOP are touting as a dream candidate has often sounded like the presidential hopeful many of them seem ready to dismiss: Sen. John McCain (Ariz.).

With some in the party clamoring for an alternative to their current field of presidential contenders and Thompson’s allies hinting strongly that he will run, 400 conservatives flocked to Newport Beach, Calif., on Friday night to hear the actor-turned-politician-turned-actor address the annual dinner of the Lincoln Club of Orange County, a group that credits itself with pushing Ronald Reagan to run for governor of California in the 1960s. Thompson delivered a vision of cutting taxes, reducing the size of government, overhauling Social Security and staying in Iraq until “there is some semblance of stability.”

He also called for “reform-minded, change-minded leaders,” a profile that McCain — whom Thompson described as “a man of the highest integrity and courage” in 1999 when he co-chaired the Arizonan’s presidential run — has worked hard to lay claim to over the past decade. Thompson was one of only four GOP senators to back McCain’s bid in 2000, and a former aide to the Tennessean said McCain “was far and away his best friend in the Senate.”

Well, almost the same except: McCain was

    1. McCain-Feingold author

    2. Kennedy-McCain Immigration Reform Bill, co-author

    3. The 2000 Presidential campaign against President Bush calling Evangelicals “intolerant.”

    4. Gang of 14

    5. Opposed President Bush’s tax cuts

    You get the picture……..

But, should Fred Thompson run, McCain will NOT make nice and Thompson’s views on other subjects will be contrasted.

Does anyone think that negative piece’s will NOT start appearing regarding Fred Thompson – from McCain AND Romney?
