California PPIC Statewide Survey

At the national level, Giuliani is also the front runner—with or without Gingrich in the race—according tocthe mid-June USA Today/Gallup poll, with Thompson and McCain nearly tied for second place. When California’s Republican primary likely voters were presented with a shorter list this past March thatcincluded Giuliani, McCain, Gingrich, and Romney, 33 percent supported Giuliani, 19 percent supportedcMcCain, 14 percent Gingrich, and 7 percent Romney.

Giuliani is the leading candidate today among conservatives (26%) and others (35%), and both men (27%) and women (31%). Conservatives are less likely than others to support Giuliani and more likely than others to support Romney and Thompson. After Giuliani, men are more likely than women to support McCain and Thompson, while women are more likely than men to support Romney.

The GOP NUTS:

Rudy continues to enjoy a lead in California although I suspect that it is closer than 14-18 points.

When Fred Thompson announces in the next week or so, the game will be afoot with advantage Team Giuliani. Rudy has been visible in California, campaigning in both Northern and Southern California – in fact he is in California today.

No other candidate has been as visible and been as actively contending the state.

Olli Heinonen, left, deputy director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is interviewed by the media upon his arrival at a Pyongyang hotel on Friday June 29, 2009, following his visit to the Yongbyon nuclear complex. UN nuclear monitors said Friday they were able to see all the facilities they wanted on their visit to the plutonium-producing reactor that North Korea has pledged to shut down in return for aid.

U.N. inspectors, North Korea reach deal

The U.N. nuclear watchdog and North Korea have reached an agreement on how the agency will monitor and verify shutdown of the country’s main nuclear reactor, a top official said Friday.

A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency returned Friday to the North Korean capital from a two-day trip to the Yongbyon nuclear complex, broadcaster APTN reported.

It was the first IAEA visit to the facility since U.N. monitors were expelled from the country in 2002.

“We have concluded this understanding, what our monitoring and verification activities are in principle,” IAEA Deputy Director Olli Heinonen said in footage shot by APTN.

This may be one of President Bush’s and Condoleezza Rice’s biggest foreign policy accomplishments. Just a year ago, North Korea was testing a prototype ICBM and shooting it at Hawaii.

Now, North Korea is closing down its nuclear program and facilities.

But, the United States must TRUST BUT VERIFY.

Stay tuned……

As Flap has said for a few weeks (since it was definite that Thompson would announce his candidacy) the race is now between Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani.

Rudy continues to be the front-runner.

Mitt Romney has been polling well in Iowa and New Hampshire but he is fading nationally and is statistically tied with Rudy in the latest New Hampshire polling.

Again, Flap maintains it will be Florida that will determine the momentum going into Super Tuesday, February 5, 2008 that is the race to watch.

First Read has the breakdown of votes on cloture for Senate Bill 1639, the Shamnesty Illegal Immigration bill:

The Presidential candidates: All of the Democratic candidates voted YES. McCain, who was part of the bipartisan coalition that crafted and supported the bill, also voted YES. Brownback’s initial vote was YES, but later, probably when the outcome was clear, switched to NO.

Senators up for reelection in 2008: On the Democratic side, all the blue state senators voted YES (Biden, Durbin, Kerry, Lautenberg, Levin, Reed). But those Democrats running in red or purples states voted NO (Baucus, Harkin, Landrieu, Pryor, Rockefeller).

Most of the Republican senators up for re-election this cycle voted NO (Alexander, Allard, Chambliss, Cochran, Coleman, Collins, Cornyn, Dole, Domenici, Enzi, Inhofe, McConnell, Roberts, Sessions, Smith, Stevens, Sununu, Warner). The exceptions, with YES votes, were Craig, Hagel, and Graham (who is one of the original and most vocal coalition members that wrote the bill).

Senate Leadership: The Republican leadership was split. GOP Leader McConnell, who’s also up for re-election, voted NO. (He had voted YES on another procedural vote earlier this week.) McConnell was joined by Texas Sens. Hutchison and Cornyn, as well as Ensign, who’s responsible for running the GOP senate campaigns this cycle. Lott and Kyl split with the leadership and voted YES.

All the members of the Democratic Leadership stuck together with YES votes: Reid, Durbin, Murray, and Schumer.

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani greets a passerby during a walking tour of the Strip District of Pittsburgh, Wednesday, June 27, 2007.

Rudy Giuliani on today’s Senate Immigration Bill vote:

“Today a majority in the Senate made clear this bill shortchanged the American people by failing to end illegal immigration and failing to secure our borders. The bill did not deserve to move forward.

“As I have said before, this bill – which I believed was based more on compromise than on principle – failed to do several basic things, including: securing our borders, creating a uniform tamper-proof ID card for all foreign workers and students, establishing a single nationwide database of foreigners, and mandating the full implementation of a biometric ‘check in-check out’ system.

“The legislation was a hodgepodge at best, and I believe it would have ultimately made our country less secure.

“I urge the President to use the authority and funds at his disposal to do everything possible to end illegal immigration and secure our borders.”

Today’s vote has delivered up the illegal immigration issue to the GOP Presidential contenders.

Rudy et al should press the Democrats, particularly Hillary Clinton on this issue.
