Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Watch: Still Smitten; Update: Eric Leonard Investigating Documentary Evidence Mayor’s Office Has Different Press Rules for Spanish Language Media

Reporters swarm the mayor’s Suburban at a news conference in the mid-city area Monday, July 23, 2007.

At a mid-morning news conference, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa confirmed that he continues to see Telemundo political reporter Mirthala Salinas who is now on leave from her job because of their affair which is the subject of a Telemundo ethics investigation.

In the audio that is located here, the Mayor defends his girlfriend:

“I continue to have the utmost respect and confidence in the journalistic abilities and the high ethical standards of Mirthala Salinas,” the mayor said.

“I can tell you that I believe that if this investigation addresses all of the issues here, including the fact that she made it absolutely clear the extent of the relationship that we have, that I expect she’ll be vindicated.”

Villaraigosa confirmed he and — as he called her — “Seniorita Salinas” were still dating and speak to each other daily.

The Mayor deflects questions about the appropriateness of the affair to NBC/Telemundo. And is high in his praise for Mirthala.

“Even what you’ve read doesn’t accurately reflect the level of her talents and the seriousness of her journalism,” Villaraigosa said.

“She’s been nominated for three Emmys, she’s received two Emmys – not one; she has four Golden Mikes, not one — maybe five!”

Gad, the Mayor is supportive of the journalistic ethics of Salinas who “on air” announced the Mayor’s divorce from his wife while she knew she was the “other woman.”

Some ethics there, Mr. Mayor? Didn’t you run for Mayor on an ethics and reforming government platform?

No wonder former Mayor James Hahn is gearing up to run against you.

    Update:

Eric Leonard was on KFI’s John and Ken Show and said that he is now investigating documenatary evidence that the Mayor’s office had different press rules for Spanish language media than the regular MSM.  Leonard mentioned a source who remained unidentified.

Leonard also reported that he has received three calls – one from an insider at Los Angeles City Hall – that gave reported sightings of the Mayor with Mirthala Salinas since the Flap blew up a few weeks ago.

He also snarked out the strategy of Mayor Villar and Mirthala to “BLAME” Telemundo executives for ANY breach of journalistic ethics on the part of Mirthala.  Flap has to ask: Are they both worried that NBC/Telemundo will fire her?  Apparently, Salinas will NOT be resigning or going away quietly.

John mentioned that today’s defense of Mirthala and the glowing praise will get the Mayor some extra nookie tonight.

    Indeed……

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Watch: Mayor Denies Affair With LAPD Officer Anita Moreno

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has denied an affair with Anita Moren an LAPD officer assigned to his security detail, Eric Leonard reports:

L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has denied a rumor he had another affair with an attractive LAPD officer assigned to his protective detail.

The officer — already named in other news reports — was transferred to the bodyguard unit from a training division assignment in 2005, according to department records obtained by KFI NEWS under the California Public Records Act.

    Ok, fair enough.

But, why was Officer Anita Moreno transferred to the protective bodyguard detail?

And is this the normal protocol for selecting Mayor’s security officers?

A denial is one thing but note the half-stonewall.

Will Officer Moreno answer questions from the press?

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Watch: In the Garden of Telemundo

Graphic courtesy of the Daily News – Note Cardinal Mahoney in the tree

In today’s episode of the Mayor Villar – Mirthala Salinas novella, Rick Orlov of the Daily News has a piece about the Mayor thanking his political friends for not piling on.

First there was the Redemption Tour. Now, it’s gratitude time.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is making the rounds among elected officials these days thanking them for not taking any shots at him – in the press, at least – over his marital problems.

The mayor has had private meetings, calls and dinners with various officials to express his gratitude and to renew pledges of cooperation with the City Council to continue to push his agenda.

“The mayor is just letting us know he appreciates that none of us were piling on during the height of the controversy,” said one official, who asked not to be identified.

Did the Mayor send flowers to the Los Angeles Times and the major television networks, too?

If this story had broken about Riordan or Hahn, there would already be calls for resignation or recall.

And, what is up with the silence from the LAPD about the use of the Mayor’s security detail to cover up the affair? This NEVER would have happened under Ed Davis.

Villaraigosa and Salinas wait out a pause in filming on the north steps of the state Capitol. Salinas is now a news anchor on Telemundo 52, June 19, 2006 (now on leave).

Giuliani Notes: Radio Ads to Begin in New Hampshire and Iowa

Republican presidential hopeful and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani waves after addressing the 2007 South Carolina Fire-Rescue Convention Friday, July 20, 2007, at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Rudy Giuliani Presidential Campaign will launch three radio ads in New Hampshire and Iowa tomorrow:

    “Out of Control”:

GIULIANI: Every promise I made running as Mayor of New York City they said couldn’t be done… said I couldn’t cut crime… New York City was the crime capital of the America… can’t be done.

VOICE OVER: Under Rudy Giuliani’s leadership crime in New York City dropped 56%.

GIULIANI New York City was the welfare capital of America… 1.1 million people on welfare. You can’t cut welfare… can’t be done.

VOICE OVER: Welfare rolls went down by a staggering 58%.

GIULIANI: They said we couldn’t reduce taxes in New York. They said you couldn’t get control of spending. That’s impossible.

VOICE OVER: Rudy Giuliani turned a 2.3 billion dollar deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus and cut or eliminated 23 taxes.

GIULIANI: My focus when I ran for Mayor of New York City was on the future, and it will be in this campaign. Leadership is about what we can do, what we can accomplish, never taking “No” for an answer. This is all about how America can grow, how America can get stronger, how America can be the country that realizes all the potential we know we have.

    “Will Do:”

VOICE OVER: Here is Rudy Giuliani talking about his 12 Commitments to the American People; including his commitment to restore fiscal discipline and cut wasteful Washington spending.

GIULIANI: This is what I did in New York City. I restored fiscal discipline and I held spending in New York City, a city that was out of control in spending, to less then the rate of inflation and the growth of the population.

VOICE OVER: Leading George Will to say Rudy Giuliani’s eight years as Mayor were “the most successful episode of conservative governance in this country in the last 50 years.”

GIULIANI: We will require agency heads to present 5 to up to as much as 20% reductions in their annual budget. It’s the only way to reduce spending. And we’ll make sure we do away with earmarks in which anonymous spending is done in the billions and billions and billions of dollars. I will restore fiscal discipline and cut wasteful Washington spending.

    “Garbage Can:”

VOICE OVER: Here’s Rudy Giuliani, talking about his 12 Commitments to the American People,

including his commitment to cut taxes and reform the tax code.

GIULIANI: I believe that you collect more money from lower taxes then you collect from higher taxes. I believe in it because I saw it work.

I was given a report, shortly after I was Mayor-Elect, and the report was all of the things that should be done to take New York City out of the deficit. The biggest ones were raise taxes. They asked me what I was going to do with the report, and I said I’m going to throw it in the garbage. It doesn’t make any sense. It’s exactly why we are in the trouble we are in, and then I went ahead and reduced taxes. I reduced the rate for income tax by about 23-24 percent. The revenues from the income tax went up 40 percent. That’s what we have to do. I will cut taxes and reform the tax code because I realize that that’s how you stimulate an economy.

Mitt Romney currently leads the polls in both of these states, while Hizzoner leads in most of the others. Romney has been “on air” with television commercials for some time. Will this cheaper media buy give Rudy the BUMP he desires in these two early states?

    Stay tuned……
