Romney: Consult The Lawyers!

Romney, Giuliani continue to spar over debate charges

Republican presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani today kept up the battle from Tuesday’s GOP debate in Dearborn, exchanging charges over Romney’s promise to consult lawyers before launching an attack on Iran and Giuliani’s record as mayor of New York City.

Speaking to reporters outside a Royal Oak restaurant after meeting with voters, Romney called criticism of his remarks on consulting lawyers before using force “a phony issue” and said Giuliani was “in first place” when it came to using lawyers.

Phony Issue Mitt? You said it in the video clip above:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: “Governor Romney, that raises the question, if you were president of the United States, would you need to go to Congress to get authorization to take military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities?”

ROMNEY: “You sit down with your attorneys and tell you want you have to do, but obviously the president of the United States has to do what’s in the best interest of the United States to protect us against a potential threat. The president did that as he was planning on moving into Iraq and received the authorization of Congress…”

MATTHEWS: “Did he need it?”

ROMNEY: “You know, we’re going to let the lawyers sort out what he needed to do and what he didn’t need to do. But, certainly, what you want to do is to have the agreement of all the people — leadership of our government as well as our friends around the world where those circumstances are available.” (Mitt Romney, Republican Presidential Candidate’s Debate, Dearborn, MI, 10/9/07)

As for Powerline’s Paul Mirengoff’s: A faux “gotcha” moment

What do you expect from a Washington D.C. attorney? The same indecisiveness as Mitt Romney – or an apology for him.

Sorry, Paul, you have seemed to miss the point. There are too many lawyers and not enough LEADERS in Washington. Mitt’s response is a typical businessman’s approach to decision making not a leader but a FOLLOWER.

Paul, America does NOT need a President who has to consult lawyers to make a decision regarding Iran or our national security. America needs a LEADER who can MAKE a decision without consulting you.

From the Giuliani campaign:

In case anyone was wondering, the Romney campaign’s definition of “strong” and “direct” in the face of any threat to the American people goes something like this…

“…You know, we’re going to let the lawyers sort out what he needed to do and what he didn’t need to do.” (Mitt Romney, CNBC Debate, 10/9/07).

So applied to everything Mitt Romney has said about national security and Iran in the past means…

ROMNEY: “I think the President has whatever authority is necessary to protect this country and protect our troops.” (If the lawyers say it’s OK)

ROMNEY: “Iran is an extraordinary threat to the nation and to the world as it considers nuclear armament; that is a course which is very threatening. … It’s essential for us to stop that.” (If the lawyers say it’s OK)

ROMNEY: “If the principles of the UN’s founders and the harsh lessons from past genocide have any meaning, our leaders must act now to confront the Iranian regime’s terrorist, genocidal and nuclear ambitions.” (If the lawyers say it’s OK)

ROMNEY: “But today, I wish to focus on the regime that has become the heart of the Jihadist threat – Iran. … That being said, let me just talk for a moment about a strategy which I think should be pursued. It includes five major dimensions.” (If the lawyers say it’s OK)
