GOP targeting Clinton on phone-call snooping

In their book about Clinton’s rise to power, Her Way, Don Van Natta Jr., an investigative reporter at The New York Times, and Jeff Gerth, who spent 30 years as an investigative reporter at the paper, wrote: “Hillary’s defense activities ranged from the inspirational to the microscopic to the down and dirty. She received memos about the status of various press inquiries; she vetted senior campaign aides; and she listened to a secretly recorded audiotape of a phone conversation of Clinton critics plotting their next attack.

“The tape contained discussions of another woman who might surface with allegations about an affair with Bill,” Gerth and Van Natta wrote in reference to Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton. “Bill’s supporters monitored frequencies used by cell phones, and the tape was made during one of those monitoring sessions.”

A GOP official said, “Hillary Clinton’s campaign hypocrisy continues to know no bounds. It is rather unbelievable that Clinton would listen in to conversations being conducted by political opponents, but refuse to allow our intelligence agencies to listen in to conversations being conducted by terrorists as they plot and plan to kill us. Team Clinton can expect to see and hear this over and over again over the course of the next year.”

So, Hillary listened ILLEGALLY (without a WARRANT!) to cell phone conversations of political opponents about another of Bill’s BIMBO ERUPTIONS.

And this HYPOCRISY is something new?

Add it to the others and be prepared for the GOP television commercials which will certainly air over this very matter.

Motorist fee increases signed by governor

Acting on the last batch of bills from what experts called a disappointing regular legislative year, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday signed into law a controversial increase in motorists’ fees that is intended to raise millions to develop alternative fuel and clean-air technology.

Consumer advocates condemned the bill for putting the costs on the backs of motorists rather than oil companies.

Registration costs will go up $3 per year for all vehicles and a smog abatement charge on new cars will jump from $12 to $20 a year.

Although this is a small and modest increase, Arnold was first elected in a recall election by promising a roll back of the “car tax” and a no “new taxes” pledge.

Is this the start of Arnold’s post-partisan assault on California taxpayers?

Probably.

Schwarzenegger has NOT settled the multi-billion dollars of structural deficit in any of HIS state budgets.

Look for the Governator next year to negotiate with the majority Democrats to approve programs which would require across the board tax increases. Will there be GOP support since California law requires a 2/3′rds vote of the California Legislature to approve them?

No. There will be NO GOP support for either the programs or tax increases.

Arnold will put the tax increases on the ballot, circumventing his own party.

Flap doubts they will pass and Arnold will be portrayed as just another TYPICAL POL who taxes and spends his way to electoral bliss.

Arnold is heading the way of his fellow Predator actor, Jesse Ventura.

Rudy and Religion

The most surprising recent national polling result was an answer given by Republicans who attend church weekly when Gallup asked their presidential preference. A plurality chose Rudy Giuliani, a Catholic who in 1999 said: “I don’t attend regularly, but I attend occasionally.” Their choice raises deep concern among prominent conservative Republicans who feel it would be a serious mistake for leaders of the religious right to scorn the former mayor of New York.

This is threatening to become a major problem because, contrary to the conventional wisdom, Giuliani has stubbornly kept first place in national surveys of all Republican voters. His elevated status cannot be written off as merely superior name identification. He no longer seems uncomfortable as a Republican and clearly dominated the most recent presidential debate last week in Dearborn, Mich. The real possibility that Giuliani might actually be the Republican nominee led a group of religious conservatives, meeting in Salt Lake City Sept. 29 under the leadership of James C. Dobson of Focus on the Family, to consider a third-party alternative.

The Flap first mentioned here has neither deterred voter support for Mayor Giuliani nor scared GOP operatives to rally behind another GOP Presidential candidate. Moreover, the Dobson, Viguerie, Land Salt Lake Group group appear to be splitting their own constituency.

But the situation is not a simple confrontation between the Christian right and Giuliani. The Gallup data suggests that Dobson and the Salt Lake City group may be out of touch with rank-and-file churchgoers. A well-known social conservative, who asked that his name not be used, is disturbed by Dobson saying he could not vote for Giuliani under any conditions. Apart from being the lesser of two evils against Sen. Hillary Clinton, Giuliani seems to be the positive choice of millions of religious Americans.

It is HYPOCRITICAL of James Dobson and other members of the Christian Right to be willing to help Hillary Clinton win the Presidency when Rudy Giuliani has pledged to appoint “strict constuctionist” (certainly MORE pro-life than Hillary’s appointees) judges to the federal bench.

Apparently others, including religious values voters agree.

Craig Appeals Minn. Judge’s Ruling

U.S. Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho appealed to the Minnesota Court of Appeals on Monday in his ongoing attempt to withdraw his guilty plea in connection with an arrest in an airport bathroom sex sting.

Craig’s appeal was filed at the court in St. Paul less than two weeks after Hennepin County Judge Charles Porter refused to overturn the guilty plea, saying it “was accurate, voluntary and intelligent, and … supported by the evidence.”

Flap cannot imagine ANY appellate court overturning a trial court judge’s ruling in this minor matter.

At first this entire FLAP appeared to be hurting the GOP but as it drags on and with Craig’s refusal to resign (after announcing early he would quit) is evloving into “politics as usual” rather than an exclusive GOP scandal.

Moreover, the Idaho GOP has NO danger of losing this seat with demographics, registration and a number of front-line candidates ready to run in 2010.

Senator Craig can do what he likes. He is ONLY humiliating himself and his family.

Falling numbers of state dentists in England has led to some people taking extreme measures, including extracting their own teeth, according to a new study released Monday.

Others have used superglue to stick crowns back on, rather than stumping up for private treatment, said the study. One person spoke of carrying out 14 separate extractions on himself with pliers.

More typically, a lack of publicly-funded dentists means that growing numbers go private: 78 percent of private patients said they were there because they could not find a National Health Service (NHS) dentist, and only 15 percent because of better treatment.

“This is an uncomfortable read for all of us, and poses serious questions to politicians from patients,” said Sharon Grant of the Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health.

Overall, six percent of patients had resorted to self-treatment, according to the survey of 5,000 patients in England, which found that one in five had decided against dental work because of the cost.

The British NHS Dental Health Care System is clearly not working. Flap has been documenting the inevitable collapse of this “SOCIALIZED” system for years now.

With only a little more than half of UK dentists participating in the NHS, the government must facilitate changes unless they prefer stories like this.

Hints to the Labor Government:

1. Eliminate the NHS dental system gradually

2. Allow dentistry to be a private system like in Australia, Canada or South Africa

3. Establish a government paid voucher system which is redeemable at ANY dental office in the UK for the truly poor, disabled or infirm.

4. Cut taxes for the dentists and patients that pay for the abysmal NHS dental system.

5. Convene a panel of dental economists to privatize the UK dental care industry, including dental education.
