Will Illegal Immigration Be a 2008 Wedge Issue for the GOP? Part Two

The Democrats HAVE an illegal alien problem. Look at this poll of blue state New Yorkers.

Seven in ten New York voters who have read or heard about the Governor’s proposal to allow undocumented aliens to obtain New York driver’s licenses continue to oppose his original plan, and nearly two-thirds oppose his revised three-tiered license plan, according to a new Siena (College) Research Institute poll of registered voters released today. The Siena New York poll shows that Spitzer’s job performance rating is now virtually two-to-one negative and, for the first time ever, more voters now view him unfavorably than view him favorably. If the 2010 gubernatorial election were today, only 25 percent of voters are prepared to re-elect Eliot Spitzer, while 49 percent prefer “someone else.”

This is not just a Hillary problem but a generic one that the GOP could ride to redemption of 2006 losses in the Congress.

The poll numbers do not lie – notwithstanding the noise and wishful thinking of the LEFT and RIGHT.

A GOP WEDGE ISSUE?

You betcha……

The issue of illegal aliens shouldn’t be a “party” issue. Both parties should do what’s best for securing the country. Both parties are supporting the SAVE Act – H. R. 4088

The Save Act – forces all employers to VERIFY al social security numbers.

This “turns off” the jobs magnet. Call your congressman today and urge him/her to co-sponsor the SAVE Act.

I agree it doesn’t poll high but being that even conservative voters like you aren’t changing their vote ( you will vote for Tony Strickland over every Democrat, even one that doesn’t agree with giving out licenses, correct?) on this issue how do you really think it will be a major issue?

The major issue should be the candidates’ plans for Iraq.

You think illegal aliens drivers licenses will be a major issue. I agree it isn’t popular but I don’t see it trumping issues like the war.

You will vote for Strickland for senate as he is a Republican you normally agree with even though he voted for this bill.

That isn’t enough to change you and I don’t think it will make an anti-war voter a pro-war voter or vice versa.

Yes, illegal immigration will be a major issue in the race for 2008. Note NY Governor and Hillary Clinton both backed away from illegal alien driver’s licenses today.

The California State Senate race is speculative at this time because of the term limits initiative which will be on the February 2008 ballot.

Brian, I know you will back your fellow Democrat Jim Dantona and thus oppose Tony Strickland should he receive the GOP nomination. What does Dantona say about illegal alien’s issues like in-state tuition and driver’s licenses?

Regarding the Iraq War, the United States is doing better and winning. The issue may not be the most important by the time November 2008 rolls around.
