Michael Ramirez on Evangelical Christian Vs. Mormon in the GOP
The Mike Huckabee (Southern Baptist Minister) vs. Mitt Romney (Mormon) fight is threatening to tear the GOP apart.
And by Huckabee’s own logic, since he is not running for head of a theological college, what is he doing proclaiming himself a “Christian leader” in an ad promoting himself for president? Answer: Having the issue every which way. Seeming to take the high road of tolerance by refusing to declare Mormonism a cult, indeed declaring himself above the issue — yet clearly playing to that prejudice by leaving the question ambiguous, while making sure everyone knows that he, for one, is a “Christian leader.
Should Mike Huckabee prevail by using his Evangelical Christian beliefs to win enough GOP delegates to either WIN or BROKER the September 2008 National Convention, the GOP may implode.
Certainly the Mormons will abandon the GOP as well as Catholic, Jewish and secular GOP voters.
The GOP invited the Evangelicals to the dance and they have one of their own in Mike Huckabee as a Presidential contender.
But, this invitation and “PLAYING THE RELIGION CARD” may be the path to an overwhelming Democrat victory and the demise of the GOP as a national party.
Stay tuned……

What Romney did with his so-called “religion speech†the other day was try to get ahead of the curve. And he’s actually been quite successful. Mostly due to the fact that he pays image agencies millions to feed the media the angle that his campaign wants to present.
In doing so, they’ve done a marvelous job blowing smoke. And they’ve angled it so that “conventional Christians†are made to seem like bigots for not accepting that Romney is a “real Christian.â€
This is a beautiful deflection. But what is it a deflection from? It’s a deflection from Mormon doctrine, which says that THEY are the only true Christians! Joe Smith taught that all Christianity as presented thus far has been wrong. He rewrote whole sections of the Bible, and introduced an entirely different doctrine. And filled in the details with a story of how Jews escaped to the New World in 580 BC. And began to create warring kingdoms in America. God then cursed the “bad†group of Jews by giving them dark skin, and they are the American Indians.
Yes my friends, you heard that right! Mormons believe that American Indians are “cursed Jews.†Literally not one single piece of archeological evidence has ever surfaced that any of the kingdoms ever existed. Not a single stone from a single building. Nothing.
But Mormonism teaches that this is the REAL Christianity! Mormons refer to all non-Mormons as “gentiles,†and consider them spiritual heathens.
So it’s actually Romney that must answer whether HE thinks Huckabee is a “real Christian,†not the other way around.
But Romney’s multi-million dollar PR machine has turned the whole thing on it’s ear.

Is this what the GOP of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan has come to?
A former Baptist minister, Huckabee, who should be under church discipline for
publically misrepresenting his record as governor in order to solicit votes, and
a member of a cult (Mormonism has historically been labeled such by the federal
government and many evangelical theologians) Romney are now lecturing America
and the GOP about matters of faith and tolerance?
The end must truly be near.
Sigh.

The Church of Jesus Christ (LDS) is often accused by Evangelical pastors of not believing in Christ and, therefore, not being a Christian religion. This article http://mormonsarechristian.blogspot.com/ helps to clarify such misconceptions by examining early Christianity’s comprehension of baptism, the Godhead, the deity of Jesus Christ and His Atonement.
The Church of Jesus Christ (LDS) adheres more closely to First Century Christianity and the New Testament than any other denomination. Harper’s Bible Dictionary entry on the Trinity says “the formal doctrine of the Trinity as it was defined by the great church councils of the fourth and fifth centuries is not to be found in the New Testament.â€
Perhaps the reason the pastors denigrate the Church of Jesus Christ (LDS) is to protect their flock (and their livelihood).

I think there is a real danger for the GOP to tear its constituency apart with the use of religious doctrine differences as campaign fodder.
Someone may win a primary but piss off a whole bunch of folks.
