Mitt Romney,  President 2008

Mitt Romney Watch: Concord, New Hampshire Paper Excoriates Romney

Republican presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney, speaks at a town-hall style meeting at the American Legion Hall, Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, in Rochester, N.H.

The Concord Monitor:

Romney should not be the next president

If you were building a Republican presidential candidate from a kit, imagine what pieces you might use: an athletic build, ramrod posture, Reaganesque hair, a charismatic speaking style and a crisp dark suit. You’d add a beautiful wife and family, a wildly successful business career and just enough executive government experience. You’d pour in some old GOP bromides – spending cuts and lower taxes – plus some new positions for 2008: anti-immigrant rhetoric and a focus on faith.

Add it all up and you get Mitt Romney, a disquieting figure who sure looks like the next president and most surely must be stopped.

Romney’s main business experience is as a management consultant, a field in which smart, fast-moving specialists often advise corporations on how to reinvent themselves. His memoir is called Turnaround – the story of his successful rescue of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City – but the most stunning turnaround he has engineered is his own political career.

If you followed only his tenure as governor of Massachusetts, you might imagine Romney as a pragmatic moderate with liberal positions on numerous social issues and an ability to work well with Democrats. If you followed only his campaign for president, you’d swear he was a red-meat conservative, pandering to the religious right, whatever the cost. Pay attention to both, and you’re left to wonder if there’s anything at all at his core.

As a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1994, he boasted that he would be a stronger advocate of gay rights than his opponent, Ted Kennedy. These days, he makes a point of his opposition to gay marriage and adoption.

There was a time that he said he wanted to make contraception more available – and a time that he vetoed a bill to sell it over-the-counter.

The old Romney assured voters he was pro-choice on abortion. “You will not see me wavering on that,” he said in 1994, and he cited the tragedy of a relative’s botched illegal abortion as the reason to keep abortions safe and legal. These days, he describes himself as pro-life.

There was a time that he supported stem-cell research and cited his own wife’s multiple sclerosis in explaining his thinking; such research, he reasoned, could help families like his. These days, he largely opposes it. As a candidate for governor, Romney dismissed an anti-tax pledge as a gimmick. In this race, he was the first to sign.

People can change, and intransigence is not necessarily a virtue. But Romney has yet to explain this particular set of turnarounds in a way that convinces voters they are based on anything other than his own ambition.

In the 2008 campaign for president, there are numerous issues on which Romney has no record, and so voters must take him at his word. On these issues, those words are often chilling. While other candidates of both parties speak of restoring America’s moral leadership in the world, Romney has said he’d like to “double” the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, where inmates have been held for years without formal charge or access to the courts. He dodges the issue of torture – unable to say, simply, that waterboarding is torture and America won’t do it.

When New Hampshire partisans are asked to defend the state’s first-in-the-nation primary, we talk about our ability to see the candidates up close, ask tough questions and see through the baloney. If a candidate is a phony, we assure ourselves and the rest of the world, we’ll know it.

Mitt Romney is such a candidate. New Hampshire Republicans and independents must vote no.

Wow, Mitt Romney is a PHONY…..Fancy that…..

Mitt Romney has lied and I just can not see how he can face the people after lying and lying and lying. He sure has some nerve after professing to be a man of God to keep on spewing the trash that he does. How does he think that this type behavior reflects on his congregation or is this alright with them? He has confirmed any doudt that I had as to whether he was capable of being president. He is not capable nor is he trustworthy and I can only imagine what a grave disappointment that he would have been to his father. Telling that fabricated story about MLK and his father marching with him that was just terrible and very disappointing. I think that he has lost the believability factor and once that is gone what do you have?

Big deal. Since when do the American people let a news paper decide about who they will vote for? There are just as many publications supporting Mitt Romney. The NRO, and recently the Sioux City Journal and many more. Values are important to me, but so is our Military and Economic strength.

My vote is my decision based on the record of the candidates. Romney will be the best candidate to improve the economy. Romney will get a fence up; he will stop the flow of illegal immigration. Tancredo has even put his support behind Romney based on this issue alone.

Romney knows how the economy works, he understands international trade and he will get it done. I’m tired of all the talk; I want someone who I know will get things done. He took care of business at Bain, he took care of business in the Olympics, and he took care of business in Mass and turned around the 3 billion dollar deficit.

I want Romney to take care of Washington.

Big deal that is why a romney-bot like you is commenting.

Mitt Romney waon’t win in a general election. He will lose 45 states plus. Maybe he will win Utah.

The reason why Tom Trancrazy endorsed Romney is that his campaign manager Bay Buchanan, Pat Buchanan’s sister is a MORMON. BFD.

you guys are all bigots. just because a person is a Mormon, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t vote him. Heck, it’s just as dumb if i didn’t want to vote for Hilary because she’s a woman, or obama because he’s black and was raised Musilim, or not voting for Giluani because he’s as freakin’ old as my grandpa!! No i don’t hold anything against anyone because of their race or religion. and you shouldn’t either. all you adults disappoint me. i’m only 16 and compared to me, you guys sound like elementry school kids not wanting to play with someone because he has freckles or wears glasses. that is just plain childish. i’m too young to vote, but i’m making a statement! turn away your bigotness and your hard hearts. i don’t want to discuss religion, because i believe in seperation of church and state, and i don’t believe it should effect politics either. the ten admendants grant the freedom of religion. that is why the pilgrims sailed to america. for freedom of religion. and is romney lying? no i do not believe so! he’s just doing the same thing huckabee did to him. fighting fire with fire, an eye for an eye. huckabee is just a baby and mccain comes to comfort his “friend”, and gets into things he shouldn’t have started. don’t pick fights with people who don’t pick fights with you, that’s to mccain. huckabee was saying horse crap about romney’s poltical stance. so romney fired back at little huckabubble and now huckabee can’t take it like a man. is politics fair? no i do not believe so. people do lie for offices, but i do not believe romney has lied. he is just telling the god awful truth about mccain and huckabee. and if mccain and huckabee want president sooooooooooooooooooooooo bad, they should be able to deal with crictisim. and mitt romney will win more states than huckababy. i’m sorry for sounding so mean, it just make me mad when someone (huckabee) does wrong to someone else and they don’t get in trouble for it, but when that other person (romney) wants revenge he is treated like a criminal and is hated. think my words over. you guys may laugh and gang up on me like huckabee and mccain are doing to romney, but i know romney is the GOOD GUY! and who cares if romney doesn’t make president and huckabee does? i’ll just know that Huckabee lied.
