John McCain Watch: Colin Powell for Vice President?

PowellandMcCain

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Senator John McCain

With the selection of Senator Joe Biden as Barack Obama’s running mate, the ball is now in John McCain’s court to name his Vice Presidential selection. The formal announcement will be made next Friday at a campaign event in Dayton, Ohio.

A name not previously mentioned in the conventional wisdom is former General, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Colin Powell. There have been rumors that General Powell will be endorsing Barack Obama at the Democrat cnvention next week. But, Powell has already contributed the maximum to Team McCain.

Team McCain floated the notion of a pro-choice Vice Presidential selection last week and Powell is pro-choice on abortion. Of course, so are Tom Ridge, Joe Lieberman and Rudy Giuliani.

Now, there is this trial balloon floated at Politico.

Retired Gen. Colin Powell is among the potential running mates who have been considered by John McCain, campaign advisers told Politico.

Powell was among the possible vice presidential choices the Arizona Republican senator was thinking of when he said he would not rule out a supporter of abortion rights, a key adviser said.

Powell would be a good choice if the campaign began to focus on foreign policy and military issues but it is NOT. This campaign will be about domestic issues in key battleground states and gender politics.

John McCain would best consider Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal or Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Despite the Dems and the allied main stream media’s desperation to see Romney as McCain’s Veep, Mitt is clearly out, with (1) Obama doubling down on the class warfare theme (McCain’s 7 houses) and (2) McCain doubling down with ads showing the hypocrisy of Biden attacking Obama in the pimaries — Romney did way more than that contra McCain.

This leaves only Govs Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty. Pro-abortion Ridge and Dem-Lieberman were never real considerations, despite relentless media goading. Pawlenty’s lackluster TV performances, coupled with Palin pizzazz, the primacy of oil drilling and the ticked off women/Hillary voters, does now portend a McCain/Palin checkmate on the Dems. This is so albeit the Dems and liberal media dare not mention Palin’s name, that is, everyone but…..

And if there’s any question as to Palin being uniquely positioned and able to more than nullify Biden in debate, see the excellent discussion at palinforvp.blogspot.com

    Team McCain, well done!!!

The McCain campaign floated Powell’s name to grab some of the news away from the Biden announcement. Powell would not accept even if offered.

I don[t believe Hutchison is in the mix. I do agree that McCain cannot slam Biden for his earlier negative comments and turn around and pick Romney whose comments about McCain were much worse. I still think Pawlenty will be the choice under the old addage that the VP pick may not help you but he or she should not hurt you.

Pawlenty fits this definiton to a tee.

    Flap,

Thank goodness about Romney is correct. Hutchison is another US Senator. Why would McCain put her on the ticket?

I think a smart choice would be Elizabeth Dole. Secures NC, VA and GA and she has the resume that anyone, or woman, in politics would die for. From working for JFK to leading labor, transportation, the red cross, running for president or being elected senator. she would be a great choice for mccain.

  • JMann

Not to mention Elizabeth Dole would continue the tradition of a Nixon, Dole or Bush on every ticket since 1952 except for 1964. I would love to see Biden try and attack Elizabeth Dole, he would look like Rick Lazio

  • Mike

Dole would be a HORRIBLE pick. This is not a knock against her as a person but the Dole brand name is more well-aged than Biden. Not to mention the Dole name has an overall negative image among swing voters. Palin would be a much better bet.

  • Abraxia

Liddy Dole ruined the RSCC, so that’s a no-go.

Palin is the only one that would actually work well, as Hutchison is not only old, but also a Senator. She doesn’t have the necessary experience that Palin, a former Mayor and current Governor (10+ years of government experience) would have.

Palin, Cantor, or Pawlenty. In that order.

I know about Palin and Pawlenty . But who is Cantor ? Where does Sarah Palin stand on opening ANWAR to oil drilling ? I am for it. Also what is her stance on abortion and gay marriage ?

I am shocked, I would have gladly voted for Colin Powell, for President or Vice President, but the fact that he would back Obama who is clearly, by all standards, not qualified to be President shows the endorsement is all about race, because even though Powell was always a little left of center, he still called himself a Republican. Obama beside not being qualified, is a socialist. If you study the man’s background, and listen to his positions you can’t help but arrive at that conclusion. If Obama gets elected, God help us, hopefully he will be a one term President like Carter, and won’t have enough time to destroy our great country.
