Barack Obama’s latest ATTACK television ad: “Still”

Flap had this video earlier today in a different context about Barack Obama’s new “take off the gloves” campaign make-over and then a reader drew my attention to this piece from Ed Morrissey.

Earlier today, Barack Obama’s campaign released an ad attacking John McCain for not knowing how to send an e-mail.  Their crack research team apparently never heard of Google or Lexis-Nexis, but Jonah Goldberg does.  He discovers why McCain doesn’t use a keyboard — his torturers made sure he couldn’t.  The Boston Globe reported it eight years ago:….McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes…

And, Jonah Goldberg has an excellent point about why this is another Obama GAFFE.

Lord knows I think the chicken-hawk arguments are stupid. And I don’t think the fact that Obama never served in the military should count against him in and of itself. But how stupid is it for the Obama campaign to claim that McCain is unqualified to be president because he can’t grasp cyber-security issues based on the fact he has never sent an email when the McCain campaign can just as easily say Obama can’t understand first order national security issues because he’s never fired a rife, flown a plane, commanded men in battle, or faced an enemy? I mean which prepares someone to be commander in chief better, hitting “send” on AOL or fighting a war?

This is extremely embarassing for the Barack Obama Campaign. Obama should pull the ad and offer an apology to John McCain.

I think its a rather interesting thing that McCain cant send an email. Its been basic tech for nearly a decade. I was 7 when I was using email.

I sympathize deeply with Senator McCain’s injuries, which need not prevent him from using a computer.

I have had RSIs (repetitive strain injuries” since 1981, and in 1988 they became severe enough to prevent me from using a computer keyboard for years. However, voice-operated software appeared in the early 1990s. I first heard of it in 1991, when it cost far more than I could afford, but I’m sure money would have been no barrier to McCain. I also suspect it would have been easier for a US Senator to learn about the software than it was for an unemployed woman. My most recent copy of the software, purchased in 2006, cost under $200.00.

I acquired my first copy of a voice-operated software program in 1994. Since then, I have completed two graduate degrees using increasingly powerful and less expensive versions of the same software. It is possible to use a computer entirely hands-free, and it has been possible to do so since at least the early 1990s.

The Boston Globe article that says he can’t comb his hair also said that McCain swam, hiked, and grilled at the family weekend cabin. Other sources say that the war injuries prevent Sen McCain from raising his hands above his head. Why can’t he use a key board?

I guess you did not click through on Ed Morrissey’s link above. Note this from Forbes: http://www.forbes.com/asap/2000/0529/053_print.html

In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the U.S. Senate’s savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. “She’s a whiz on the keyboard, and I’m so laborious,” McCain admits.

J, the flap is about Obama mocking McCain because of a disability whatever the sort and the fact he is using the injuries he suffered as a result of service to America to label him out of touch and “OLD” – which is AGEISM.

  7. Flap says:

    @5

After reading my comment and linked piece at comment 6 do you understand a little more about his disability?

Have you ever watched McCain stand and move around? Notice how his arms appear very stiff.

  8. Techxy says:

This is absurd. Unless McCain is adamant about placing the keyboard at eye-level he should have no problem pecking at the keyboard and wiggling the mouse. I find that resting the keyboard at waist level is comfortable and the generally accepted practice.

  9. Flap says:

Apparently not and I doubt you have been beaten in a POW camp for five years either. He has restricted movement in his arms. Look at him closely sometime.

  10. Justin says:

Oops. Apparently he said he can type, and he referred to using a blackberry–the finger coordination required for a blackberry is presumably less than that of a computer.

  11. Flap says:

No oops and Media Matters link from George Soros – give me a break. This is an old thread.
