  • The Hill indulges in some speculation regarding Arlen Specter’s political future. With Pat Toomey suddenly looking for a rematch in a Republican primary and the RNC threatening to insert itself into the race, Specter may find the pastures greener on the other side of the partisan fence:

  • A new survey by The Field Poll finds that Orange County Assemblyman Chuck DeVore has a tough row to hoe in his run Barbara Boxer’s U.S. Senate seat.

Field Poll finds that in a hypothetical Republican primary featuring DeVore, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (who has been thought to be a good candidate for Senate, but has never said he is interested in the job) and former HP CEO Carly Fiorina (who is thought to be considering a run), DeVore comes in a distant third, with Arnold taking 31 percent of the vote, Fiorina taking 24 percent and the assemblyman taking 9.

Without the governor, Fiorina leads DeVore 31 percent to 19 percent, with 50 percent undecided.

  • The California Supreme Court's signal Thursday that it would uphold Proposition 8 but still recognize 18,000 existing same-sex marriages raised questions and concerns about the prospect of being a minority within a minority — part of an exclusive club whose doors have been closed to others.

While some gay married couples fretted Friday about being isolated culturally and legally, others expressed relief and joy that their marriages would remain valid. Some said they would feel pressure to be a symbol for same-sex marriage and to always present a positive image.

"If I'm on an island, at least I'm on an island with someone I love," said Howard Bragman, a Hollywood publicist who married his partner before the November election in which voters passed the gay-marriage ban.

  • President Barack Obama on Saturday challenged his country to see its hard times as a chance to "discover great opportunity in the midst of great crisis."

"That is what we can do and must do today. And I am absolutely confident that is what we will do," Obama said in his weekly radio and video address, taped a day earlier at the White House.

The work week ended on more down news, with the report of 651,000 more American jobs slashed and an unemployment rate climbing to 8.1 percent. That is the highest rate of people out of work in more than 25 years, as the recession continued to put enormous pressures on families and industries.
