Poll Watch: The Rise of the Independent Voter

There has been much discussion as of late as to the declining Republican Party and its demise as a “regional” party. Of course, this is bull and Flap has shown you why.

Now, Mark Blumenthal over at Pollster has his latest Party ID Chart.

    • Democrats – 36.7%
    • Independents – 33.5%
    • Republicans – 26.4%

And, here are the most recent trends:

    2009-05-01_PewParty

The most striking feature of the above charts?

The most striking feature of the chart is not the drop in Republicans, but rather the increase in independent identification. The decline in Republican ID is a nearly parallel decline for the Democrats. That trend is not surprising, as partisan identification often increases slightly during the last few months of an election year and fade afterward. However, note that the Pew Research report labels the magnitude of increase among independents as “noteworthy” as it appears much greater than what they observed in 2005.

    Why more independent voters?

Well, for one, why register with a party when in some states you can vote in whichever primary election you wish.

Or, perhaps American voters are tired of labels.

In any case, the majority of elections will be won be appealing to the independents, on an election by election basis as their numbers increase. Judging success of a political party by its either increasing or decreasing registration numbers may not be that important any longer, especially since both major parties are shrinking.

Nancy Pelosi on CIA Torture? – NO. Except…

    ramireztoon042709

    Political Cartoon by Michael Ramirez

What did Democrat Speaker of the House know about CIA Enhanced Interrogation Techniques and when did she know it?

It is unclear from her public pronouncements.

Judging by Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress who were informed at the time, the answer seems to be yes. In December 2007, after a report in The Post that she had knowledge of these procedures and did not object, she admitted that she’d been “briefed on interrogation techniques the administration was considering using in the future.”

Today Pelosi protests “we were not — I repeat — were not told that waterboarding or any other of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used.” She imagines that this distinction between past and present, Clintonian in its parsing, is exonerating.

On the contrary. It is self-indicting. If you are told about torture that has already occurred, you might justify silence on the grounds that what’s done is done and you are simply being used in a post-facto exercise to cover the CIA’s rear end. The time to protest torture, if you really are as outraged as you now pretend to be, is when the CIA tells you what it is planning to do “in the future.”

But Pelosi did nothing. No protest. No move to cut off funding. No letter to the president or the CIA chief or anyone else saying “Don’t do it.”

On the contrary, notes Porter Goss, then chairman of the House intelligence committee: The members briefed on these techniques did not just refrain from objecting, “on a bipartisan basis, we asked if the CIA needed more support from Congress to carry out its mission against al-Qaeda.”

More support, mind you. Which makes the current spectacle of self-righteous condemnation not just cowardly but hollow. It is one thing to have disagreed at the time and said so. It is utterly contemptible, however, to have been silent then and to rise now “on a bright, sunny, safe day in April 2009” (the words are Blair’s) to excoriate those who kept us safe these harrowing last eight years.

There is little doubt that the evidence clearly indicates Speaker Pelosi and other high ranking Democrats in supporting the CIA and its enhanced interrogation techniques, including waterboarding against high value Al Qaeda detainees.

Why do they continue to LIE?

And, why President Obama will never support a “Truth Commission” to have public hearings regarding the CIA, Enhanced Techniques and Waterboarding in particular.

    Political cowardice and self-preservation.

    • nsurance Commissioner Steve Poizner on Thursday challenged his two GOP rivals, Tom Campbell and Meg Whitman, to debate the May 19 budget ballot measures.

"Surely all three of us can spare an hour for each debate in order to better inform the voters about both our individual positions but also the ballot measures," Poizner wrote of his two proposed hour-long debates in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Campbell, a former state budget director and member of Congress, heartily accepted.

"I enthusiastically look forward to the opportunity to debate both Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner on these important ballot measures," he replied, challenging his opponents to detail "what they propose as a realistic solution to our budget crisis if they oppose" the measures.
      Campbell supports Propositions 1A, 1D and 1E.

Whitman declined the invite. "Given the fact that we both stand strongly in opposition to Propositions 1A, 1B, and 1C ‐- the most critical of the Special Election measures

    • As the secrets about the CIA's interrogation techniques continue to come out, there's new information about the frequency and severity of their use, contradicting an 2007 ABC News report, and a new focus on two private contractors who were apparently directing the brutal sessions that President Obama calls torture.
According to current and former government officials, the CIA's secret waterboarding program was designed and assured to be safe by two well-paid psychologists now working out of an unmarked office building in Spokane, Washington.

Bruce Jessen and Jim Mitchell, former military officers, together founded Mitchell Jessen and Associates.

Both men declined to speak to ABC News citing non-disclosure agreements with the CIA. But sources say Jessen and Mitchell together designed and implemented the CIA's interrogation program.

    • 53 Percent Said Obama Won't Get U.S. Out of Recession by 2012

Apparently the American people are grading on a curve when it comes to their approval of how President Obama is handling the economy. The New York Times/CBS poll asked, "Do you think Barack Obama will be able to get the country out of the economic recession in his first term, or won't he be able to do that?"

Think about that. They're essentially asking, will the recession end by November 2012, or arguably, January 2013!

Overall, 37 percent said Obama will, 53 percent said he will not; 10 percent didn't know or didn't answer.

Among whites, it was 34–56 he won't; among blacks, it was 51–38 he will.

Sounds like the soft bigotry of low expectations.

    • In the pantheon of unsolved mysteries, few can top the Zodiac, the shadowy killer blamed for five Bay Area murders in the late 1960s and untold numbers of stranger-than-fiction theories ever since.

Add to that roster the tale told Wednesday by Deborah Perez, who announced to a skeptical crowd of reporters and Zodiac aficionados here not only that the killer was her adoptive and long-dead father, Guy Ward Hendrickson, but that she had been present at at least one killing and had even scribbled some of the taunting notes the Zodiac sent to the press and the police.

“I was a child and just thought I was helping my dad,” said Ms. Perez, a 47-year-old real-estate agent from Southern California. “I didn’t know.”

    • Real change comes not from throwing tea bags at the steps of city hall, but by accumulating political power to effect change. And it is extremely easy to do so at the local level. As a long time activist within the political party and now an elected Republican, I can assure you that very few people ever turn out for a Republican precinct meeting in most areas.

Those who turn out to the precinct meetings elect the precinct leaders. Then they go to the county meetings and elect the county leaders. Then they go to the state and elect the state leaders. Along the way, those people get to vet potential candidates, come up with positions for the party, etc. They accumulate influence and then power.

    • Senior Senate Democrats are objecting to the deal Majority Leader Harry Reid made with Sen. Arlen Specter, saying they will vote against letting the former Republican shoot to the top of powerful committees after he switches parties.

Several Democrats are furious with Sen. Reid (D-Nev.) for agreeing to let Specter (Pa.) keep his seniority, accrued over more than 28 years as a GOP senator. That agreement would allow Specter to leap past senior Democrats on powerful panels — including the Appropriations and Judiciary committees.
