Sarah Palin Inks Major Book Deal While Two More Alaska Ethics Complaints are Dismissed

    eagleflooding01_may112009_large

Governor Sarah Palin toured the flood-stricken community of Eagle, located about 200 miles east of Fairbanks, May 11, 2009

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has signed a book deal with HarperCollins Publishers.

“There have been so many things written and said through mainstream media that have not been accurate, and it will be nice through an unfiltered forum to get to speak truthfully about who we are and what we stand for and what Alaska is all about,” Palin said in an interview today in which she announced the deal.

Palin and HarperCollins would not say how much she was being paid. Asked why, the former Republican nominee for vice president said she didn’t want to distract from the substance of the book.

“The idea is to focus on the content of the book and what’s coming in terms of me being able to tell my story unrestrained and unfiltered,” Palin said.

The governor said details will be disclosed as required under Alaska law when her annual financial disclosures are due next March. Her advance from the publisher is likely to be paid in stages, though, and it’s not clear if she has to disclose the full amount on that report or only the portion received in 2009, according to the state public offices commission.

In the meantime, two more Alaska Ethics Complaints have been dismissed against the Governor.

Today the governor’s office was informed that yet two more ethics complaints filed against Governor Palin have been dismissed, part of the mounting evidence that accusations of wrongdoing by the governor lack merit and have been politically or personally motivated.

The complaints, one by Zane Henning of Wasilla, filed on November 13, and one by Anthony Martin of Talkeetna, filed on December 2, were dismissed by Michael Geraghty, an investigator for the State Personnel Board. Geraghty concluded “that the conduct asserted, if true, would not constitute violation of the ethics act.”

Looks like the Governor is clearing the decks and getting ready to run for re-election.

Food and Drug Administration Warns General Mills: Cheerios Is a Drug

    cheerios

The Obama Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned General Mills, the makers of Cheerios, that the labeling on Cheerios boxes is in “serious violation” of federal rules.

    The letter is here.

Based on claims made on your product’s label, we have determined that your Cheerios® Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal is promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug because the product is intended for use in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of disease. Specifically, your Cheerios® product bears the following claims ort its label:

    • “you can Lower Your Cholesterol 4% in 6 weeks” ”
    • “Did you know that in just 6 weeks Cheerios can reduce bad cholesterol by an average of 4 percent? Cheerios is … clinically proven to lower cholesterol. A clinical study showed that eating two 1 1/2 cup servings daily of Cheerios cereal reduced bad cholesterol when eaten as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol.”

These claims indicate that Cheerios® is intended for use in lowering cholesterol, and therefore in preventing, mitigating, and treating the disease hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, the claims indicate that Cheerios® is intended for use in the treatment, mitigation, and prevention of coronary heart disease through, lowering total and “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. Elevated levels of total and LDL cholesterol are a risk factor for coronary heart disease and can be a sign of coronary heart disease. Because of these intended uses, the product is a drug within the meaning of section 201(g)(1)(B) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321 (g)P)(B)]. The product is also a new drug under section 201(p) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321(p)] because it is not generally recognized as safe and effective for use in preventing or treating hypercholesterolemia or coronary heart disease. Therefore, under section 505(a) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 355(a)], it may not be legally marketed with the above claims in the United States without an approved new drug application.

And, General Mills responded that it’s flap with the FDA is a miscommunication on their packaging.

The science is not in question … the clinical study supporting Cheerios’ cholesterol-lowering benefit is very strong. The FDA is interested in how the Cheerios cholesterol-lowering information is presented on the Cheerios package and website. We look forward to discussing this with FDA and to reaching a resolution.”

Ok, you would think the FDA would work with General Mills (which is a large food corporation) in formulating better language in compliance with the law rather than issuing a caustic legal missive which demands a fifteen day response.

Wouldn’t cooperation and compliance be better for the American people than confrontation and gotcha?

Soda Tax Weighed to Pay for Health Care Reform?

How does drinking soda relate to childhood obesity? Richard F. Daines, M.D., New York State’s Health Commissioner, explains why more milk consumption and a tax on sugar based soda are better for kids’ health.

There will have to be a helluva lot more soda consumed to pay for Obamacare.

Senate leaders are considering new federal taxes on soda and other sugary drinks to help pay for an overhaul of the nation’s health-care system.

The taxes would pay for only a fraction of the cost to expand health-insurance coverage to all Americans and would face strong opposition from the beverage industry. They also could spark a backlash from consumers who would have to pay several cents more for a soft drink.

On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee is set to hear proposals from about a dozen experts about how to pay for the comprehensive health-care overhaul that President Barack Obama wants to enact this year. Early estimates put the cost of the plan at around $1.2 trillion. The administration has so far only earmarked funds for about half of that amount.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington-based watchdog group that pressures food companies to make healthier products, plans to propose a federal excise tax on soda, certain fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and ready-to-drink teas. It would not include most diet beverages. Excise taxes are levied on goods and manufacturers typically pass them on to consumers.

Reducing consumption of sugary drinks will certainly help obesity and dental health. However, I really cannot foresee any beverage tax coming anywhere close to paying for ANY socialized universal health care system the way President Obama has envisioned.

To think so, is just plain stupid. But, you know bureaucrats and big government folks – like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Obama.

Pretty soon, the government will attempt to restrict the amount of calories an American can consume a day since everyone will be paying for government run health care. You know, less calories, more health, less death – more years to pay taxes to the state.

    It is all good, right?

Poll Watch: 50 Per Cent of Arizona GOP Voters Say Senator John McCain Out of Touch with Republican Party Base

    The latest Rasmussen poll.

Arizona Republican voters don’t see Senator John McCain having much trouble winning the GOP Senate Primary next year, but 50% believe he has lost touch with his party’s base. Conservatives are even more critical of the longtime incumbent.

Forty-three percent (43%) of Arizona Republican voters offer a more positive assessment and say McCain has done a good job representing GOP values, according to a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state.

Nationally, 69% of GOP voters believe that Republicans in Congress are out of touch with the party’s base. A recent analysis by Scott Rasmussen suggested that the Beltway GOP is on a continuing “path to irrelevance.

Among all voters in Arizona, 45% say McCain has lost touch with GOP voters in the state, while 38% say he’s done a good job representing the party’s values.

But, even so, Senator John McCain is a heavy favorite for re-election next year. He is viewed favorably by 65 per cent and unfavorably by 35 per cent.

The lack of class by the LEFT is almost predictable and becoming standard – no longer shocking as it is meant to be.

Politics has its swings and the youngsters mocking the older American voters will be old one day. Will they view the world the same as today?

    Doubtful.

Plus, their children and grandchildren will then in turn mock and disrespect them.

In the meantime, voters will be turned off from the shock-jock antics and vote accordingly.

Video: Notre Dame Seniors Refuse to Attend Graduation in Protest of President Barack Obama Visit

In defense of the unborn, we wish to express our deepest opposition to Reverend John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.s invitation of President Barack Obama to be the University of Notre Dames principal commencement speaker and the recipient of an honorary degree. Our objection is not a matter of political partisanship, but of President Obamas hostility to the Catholic Churchs teachings on the sanctity of human life at its earliest stages. Further, the Universitys decision runs counter to the policy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops against honoring pro-choice politicians. We cannot sit by idly while the University honors someone who believes that an entire class of human beings is undeserving of the most basic of all legal rights, the right to live.

And, in addition to senior students refusing to attend graduation there will be a demonstration as well on the South Quad of the University of Notre Dame between 11 AM and 4 PM on the day of the Commencement.

Does the Notre Dame University Administration “get it” yet?

House Democrats Vote for The Airport for No One

    Murtha-airport

From the National Republican Congressional Committee – Book Your Flight Today

    Here it comes!

While Californians are struggling with high unemployment and home foreclosures, the House Democrats have voted to spend government tax money to build an airport in Pennsylvania that an average 20 people use a day.

It is an airport for no one.

    Except Congressman John Murtha.

Eight House Democrats voted for this boondoggle and will be targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee today in radio ads to be aired in their districts.

The lawmakers are Larry Kissell of North Carolina, Harry Teague of New Mexico, Kurt Schrader of Oregon, Michael Arcuri of New York, Carol Shea Porter of New Hampshire, Vic Snyder of Arkansas, Mark Schauer of Michigan, and Stephanie Herseth of South Dakota

The version running against Kurt Schrader can be heard here. The core of the message is:

“Kurt Schrader voted for Nancy Pelosi’s wasteful $787 billion spending plan. Schrader’s been voting with Pelosi 97 percent of the time. It’s unbridled power, with no accountability. ABC News says $800,000 went to repave for a runway at a Pennsylvania airport that only has three flights a day. It’s the airport for no one. The airport averages just 20 passengers a day — but one of those customers happens to be a powerful Democratic Congressman, John Murtha. Coincidence? You decide.”

The stories of wasteful government spending are only beginning to surface. The earmarks, the special deals, the favoritism all in the name of economic stimulus.

    What a waste……
