Video: David Letterman Defends Jokes About Sarah Palin and Her Daughters

David Letterman defends his jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughters in a seven minute segment above, June 10, 2009

As I predicted David Letterman issued a weak and trite non-apology for his inappropriate attacks on Sarah Palin’s 14 year old daughter Willow which he confused with Bristol who is 19.

“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight’s show. “These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl…. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.” Saying he hopes he’s “cleared part of this up,” Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

An invitation to appear on his show is the lamest of reparations and his cover hius ass moments above will continue to spur a call or a boycott of his show sponsors.

    Stupid joke, but boycott worthy? Really? Seems to me he knew it was in bad taste when he delivered it initially anyway…

    These guys have to come up with thousands of jokes a year, some that have to reach the edge in order to be funny. Once in a while they’re going to step over the line. If they go too far, we can always vote with the remote.

    Mark me satisfied with the apology.

    He totally knew this joke was across the line. He’s an intelligent man and it’s not like he was the only person to review the joke before it aired. Oh yeah, speaking of which, the freaking producers could have edited it out before it aired! So basically Letterman is tying to make some waves and steal viewers from NBC during their transition. And they’re attempting to do this by attacking the children of a losing political party and calling them sluts! Nice try Letterman. Oh, and I guess this shows what a classy show you run. Have fun playing 2nd fiddle to Conan just like you did to Leno for the rest of your career!

    Speaking of anti-Semitism, it’s Jerry Falwell and other fundy leaders who’ve gleefully predicted that in the future EVERY nation will be against Israel (an international first?) and that TWO-THIRDS of all Jews will be killed, right?
    Wrong! It’s the ancient Jewish prophet Zechariah who predicted all this in the 13th and 14th chapters of his book! The last prophet, Malachi, explains the reason for this future Holocaust that’ll outdo even Hitler’s by stating that “Judah hath dealt treacherously” and “the Lord will cut off the man that doeth this” and asks “Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother?”
    Haven’t evangelicals generally been the best friends of Israel and Jewish persons? Then please explain the recent filthy, hate-filled, back-stabbing tirades by David Letterman (and Sandra Bernhard) against a leading evangelical named Sarah Palin, and explain why most Jewish leaders have seemingly condoned Palin’s continuing “crucifixion”!
    While David and Sandra are tragically turning comedy into tragedy, they are also helping to speed up and fulfill the Final Holocaust a la Zechariah and Malachi, thus helping to make the Bible even more believable!

    Well if this had been about Obama and one of his daughters, he would be off the air, pure and simple. If the “slutty flight attendant look” joke had been directed ta Michelle Obama, he would be off the air.

    If the joke wasn’t about the daughter that was AT the game with them, then why make a joke about a daughter, that wasn’t there, having sex at a game where the younger daughter was present? So, either he is an idiot who doesn’t check things out before he sticks his foot in his mouth or he’s a liar. Either way he’s tacky.

    I just wrote to CBS & several of the sponsors in SUPPORT of David Letterman. The whole thing is silly. He was not condoning the sexual abuse of Sarah Palin’s daughter. He was making fun of the MEN referenced in the jokes! If anybody has exploited her family, it’s her. If you don’t believe me, let me reference all of the ridiculous interviews she did after the election. I will also add this – you can’t willingly step into the limelight, bring your family along, behave so outrageously and then expect the world to not notice or call you on it. Just ask Michael Jackson.

    Honestly, a lot of you people really need to get hobbies. Comedians tell jokes — and a lot of the ones that have been told about Sarah Palin and her family are much worse than this one. Palin would have been smart to let it slide. It’s sad that so many of you are going along with her meaningless and embarassing tirade.

    I don’t understand women or mothers that condone this kind of ‘comedy’. What, if any one of you that condone Letterman’s vulgar joke, had a child (no matter what age) that anyone talked about in this manner? Would that be okay? I hope not. You are there to defend your child at all costs. The people that are saying that Palin paraded her children out there and has made them fair game are being riduculous. ALL politicians ‘parade’ their families out there. Hey, Dave……..why did it take you so long to marry your son’s mother after you KNOCKED her up? I would also bet your wife buys her slut make-up at Bloomingdales. Letterman is no better than Imus, who lost his job. I hope this is the beginning of the end for him. Just think….God spared his life during his heart surgery so he could base his jokes on the unfortunate circumstances that any family could go through. Even those who preach abstinence! His mother must be proud.
