    • Fresh from a humbling loss in last year’s presidential election, Sen. John McCain is working behind-the-scenes to reshape the Republican Party in his own center-right image.

McCain is recruiting candidates, raising money for them and hitting the campaign trail on their behalf. He’s taken sides in competitive House, Senate and gubernatorial primaries and introduced his preferred candidates to his top donors.

    • The news that Whitman backed and endorsed Boxer — considered Public Enemy Number One for the GOP in California — comes just days after the eBay CEO faced heat over her failure to vote for decades. She assured grassroots activists at the state GOP convention last week of her solid Republican credentials.

"I'm a Republican, and you'll find I'm a darn good one,'' she told them. "I've committed myself to running for one of the toughest chief executive jobs on the planet because I believe Republican ideals, truly and consistently applied, will save this state."

    • The trick for any gubernatorial hopeful is to be liberal or conservative enough to win a party nomination but centrist enough to capture independents' support. The three Republicans, Meg Whitman, Steve Poizner and Tom Campbell, all carry the moderate label, much to the chagrin of conservative GOP activists, while Brown will hew to the center, taking the "netroots" left for granted, as long as his only rival, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, languishes.

Ultimately, the November 2010 contest may hinge more on personality, money, campaign tactics and image than any major ideological cleavage. Brown would portray himself as the seasoned professional while his Republican foe would define him as an overaged retread.

    • Sen. Thomas Carper (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, told CNSNews.com that he does not “expect” to read the actual legislative language of the committee’s health care bill because it is “confusing” and that anyone who claims they are going to read it and understand it is fooling people.

“I don’t expect to actually read the legislative language because reading the legislative language is among the more confusing things I’ve ever read in my life,” Carper told CNSNews.com.

    • At a conference sponsored by Hoffenblum's publication, the Republican identified eight congressional seats and 13 state Assembly seats as competitive. Nearly all of those Assembly seats and more than half of the congressional seats are now held by Republicans.

"I think this is going to be when we find out if the Republican Party has any life left in it whatsoever as far as being a statewide competitive party," said Hoffenblum, whose publication tracks and handicaps races throughout the state.

A drop in Republican registration and an influx in decline-to-state voters who have not traditionally voted with the GOP have put some districts formerly considered "safe" Republican seats into play.

"I think it's going to be a very, very difficult road on the Republican front if they don't do something about registration, something to appeal to decline-to-state voters, many of whom are Latinos and Asians who have not been voting Republican for the last four election cycles," Hoffenblum said.

    • U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said today there will be a "public option" in whatever health insurance reform bill comes out of Congress.

"We are going to have a public option before this bill goes to the president's desk," Reid said in a conference call with constituents, referring to some kind of government plan.
"I believe the public option is so vitally important to create a level playing field and prevent the insurance companies from taking advantage of us," he said.

Reid also mentioned the inclusion of incentives for healthy behavior, something suggested by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev.

“Darned Good” Republican Meg Whitman’s Campaign for California Governor Self-Destructs With Revelation She Endorsed Democrat U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer in 2003

Meg Whitman has already been struggling with her GOP bonafides with her recent re-registration from a DTS (Decline to State) voter to the Republican Party and this revelation will not help her – AT ALL.

Former eBay executive Meg Whitman, the 2010 gubernatorial candidate who has recently portrayed herself as a “darned good” conservative Republican, endorsed Democratic U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer in 2003, records show.

“Whitman contributed $4,000 to Boxer in the 2004 reelection campaign — and endorsed Boxer as a part of Technology Leaders for Boxer,” confirmed Boxer aide Rose Kapolczynski today.

And, she signed an “open letter” appealing for support from the California technology executives, touting Boxer as a “dynamic and courageous leader” on the tech front.

Whitman’s name was included in a “Friends of Boxer” release when the committee of a dozen technology leaders was formed in 2003 to assist the California Democrat in her 2004 re-election effort, which pitted her against GOP former Secretary of State Bill Jones.

The move by Whitman to back the Democratic junior Senator came about because “in the spring of 2003, some technology leaders were interested in announcing their support for Boxer, so our campaign went out and talked to a wide range of leaders. And Meg Whitman was among them,” Kapolcyznski said.

“She agreed to endorse the Senator…there was a fundraising event in Silicon Valley later in the year and Whitman maxed out to the campaign,” she said.

Looks like the race for California governor in 2010 will be California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner’s to lose.

And, how will this affect former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina’s bid to unseat Barbara Boxer?

If Carly Fiorina decides to run, that is.

Is Sarah Palin A Catastrophy for the GOP in 2012?

Sarah Palin’s new book will be released November 17, 2009

I don’t know if Steve Schmidt is a “SECRET” shill for Palin, trying to hype her new book, “Going Rogue” or whether he is just a news hound.

If Sarah Palin is her party’s nominee for president in 2012 it will be a “catastrophic election” for the GOP, Sen. John McCain’s 2008 campaign manager predicted on Friday.

Longtime GOP strategist Steve Schmidt — who ran McCain’s campaign and played a role in picking Palin as the senator’s running mate — offered a scathing assessment of the former Alaska governor’s political trajectory.

“I think that she has talent,” Schmidt said, “but my honest view is that she would not be a winning candidate for the Republican Party in 2012.”

“She is someone who has a passionate base that constitutes millions of Americans,” Schmidt said. “But in the year since the election has ended, she has done nothing to expand her appeal beyond that base into the middle of the electorate where elections are decided.”

Most of the GOP already understands that Sarah Palin is a conservative leader who is in the arena for the long term. Now, whether Palin will seek or will receive the GOP Presidential nomination in 2012 is pure speculation.

Sarah’s polling numbers of favorable vs. unfavorable and in potential match-ups with Romney, Huckabee and Pawlenty are mixed at best. She understands her political rehabilitation after the most relentless personal attacks in political history will take some time.

However, the GOP REALLY doesn’t need Steve Schmidt to constantly harp on the anti-Palin theme.

Day By Day by Chris Muir October 2, 2009 – Rule 1: You Do Not Talk About Chicago’s Problems

    +++++Update+++++

To Flap’s surprise Chicago is eliminated from 2016 Olympics site consideration in the very first round

    Is Obama embarassed?

Day By Day by Chris Muir

My bet is that Chicago will be picked as the 2016 Olympics host.

The announcement will be made in about two hours and Obama will be hailed as the deciding influence. There will be media interviews all hailing “The One.”

In the meantime, the war in Afghanistan is deteriorating while Obama reviews the situation and American unemployment  is at a 9.8 per cent rate with 263,000 jobs lost in the past month, which is a 17 per cent rate including laid-off workers taking part-time work or having given up trying for employment.

But, the United States may get the Olympics in 2016 – some consolation, right?
