  • Florida's unemployment hit 12.2 percent in February, the highest rate on record, soaring past even the rates recorded in the 1973-1975 recession.

February's rate rose a 0.2 percentage point from the January revised rate of 12 percent. More than 1.26 million people are out of work in the state.

  • University of California leaders made clear Thursday that they were not in a rush to embrace a controversial proposal for UC to provide healthcare for state prison inmates, with an emphasis on connecting doctors and patients remotely over the Internet.

The UC regents were scheduled to discuss the issue at a meeting in San Francisco but delayed it for at least two months, deciding to form a committee to study the plan and other options. "This is a very complicated issue, and we are going to have to spend a great deal of time to determine how and if the university is going to get involved," regents Chairman Russell S. Gould said at the meeting.

  • With Sunday’s vote in the House of Representatives, Congress has passed the first piece of an historic overhaul of the nation’s health care system. What will this reform mean for you — as a consumer of insurance, a patient and a California taxpayer?

In the short run, it is going to depend on where you are in the system. Most likely you will not be affected much at all for many years, despite all the fury unfolding in Washington and across the nation. In the long run, the effects could be more profound.

The bill does a lot of things, but most of them can be divided into two major categories. It tightens regulation of the insurance industry. And it expands access to care for the poor and for low-income working people.

Thanks Dan for the great summary of Obamacare. My question is where will they get all of the money for the subsidies? The costs will be tremendous.

The LEFT and the Democratic Party NEED a health care reform narrative that demonizes someone or something because Obamacare is a disaster. The worst, including massive tax increases, bureaucracy and government waste are yet to come.

And, come it WILL.

The Easter recess will demonstrate as to how disastrous Obamacare has been to the Democrat Congressional majority. Watch the district protests and the number of incumbent retirements.

senaterepublicans CA Sen: Carly Fiorina Gains in Latest PPIC Poll

California U.S. Senate candidates Tom Campbell, Carly Fiorina and Chuck DeVore

Graphic courtesy of Calbuzz

The latest PPIC (Public Policy Institute of California) poll has been released. And, it is all good news for Carly Fiorina.
The Republican primary race for U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer’s seat has tightened since January, when Tom Campbell led both Carly Fiorina and Chuck DeVore among Republican likely voters (27% Campbell, 16% Fiorina, 8% DeVore). Today, Campbell and Fiorina are in a close race (24% Fiorina, 23% Campbell), and DeVore’s level of support is unchanged (8%). In this campaign—which has seen little advertising—the largest percentage of likely voters (44%) is undecided, similar to January (48%).

In hypothetical November matchups, incumbent Boxer is deadlocked with Campbell (43% to 44%), with 13 percent undecided. A plurality of independents support Campbell (48% Campbell, 32% Boxer, 20% undecided). Since January, support for Boxer has dropped 10 points among independents, and Campbell’s support has increased 11 points. Half of women support Boxer (50% vs. 38% Campbell) and half of men favor Campbell (51% vs. 36% Boxer).

Boxer is in a similarly tight race with Fiorina (44% to 43%), with 13 percent undecided. Among independents, Fiorina leads Boxer (41% Fiorina, 35% Boxer, 24% undecided). Women favor Boxer by 14 points (51% Boxer, 37% Fiorina) and men favor Fiorina by 13 points (49% Fiorina, 36% Boxer).

In a potential race with DeVore, Boxer has a slight lead (46% Boxer, 40% DeVore, 14% undecided). Boxer holds a sizable lead over DeVore among women (53% to 34%) and younger voters (52% to 30%), while DeVore leads among men (47% to 39%).

I will have more comments either later today or tomorrow when I can see more of the cross tabs of the poll. But, the short summary is that Carly Fiorina is pulling up, Tom Campbell is starting to fade and the question is why Chuck DeVore continues in this race with so little support.

And…..Democrat Senator Barabara Boxer is extremely vulnerable.

Poiitical violence regarding Obamacare is NOT acceptable and should be rejected in all circumstances. Obamacare will be repealed and revised at the ballot box and the Congress. There is little doubt.

John Hinderaker over at Powerline has an excellent piece.

Today’s big news story, along with the epic debate on health care taking place in the Senate, is the Democrats’ claim that some of their Congressmen have been threatened with violence after voting for the government’s takeover of health care. Steny Hoyer claims that more than ten House members “have reported incidents of threats or other forms of harassment.” He also admits that figure is “just an estimate,” which I guess means he made it up. Nor is it clear what “other forms of harassment” means; angry phone calls from constituents, perhaps.

We condemn political violence in virtually all circumstances; certainly in all circumstances that could arise in our democracy. Threats of violence, sadly, are not uncommon in politics; let alone “harassment.” Even insignificant conservatives like us have been threatened with violence on several occasions, and the linked article notes that Jim Bunning received threats after he temporarily held up the extension of unemployment benefits a few weeks ago.

The current threats (assuming they are real, as I assume some of them are) are being played up in the press because the Democrats want to dampen the anger that has erupted over their adoption of a government medicine program through a series of legislative maneuvers that are in some respects unprecedented. It is important for the Democrats and their press minions to understand that there are many millions of Americans who regard Obamacare not just as misguided public policy, but as an illegitimate usurpation of power. I am one of the many millions who are outraged at the Left’s attempt to destroy the private health care system that has served my family so well, and who regard Obamacare as illegitimate.

Read it all……
