    • The Wall Street Journal's decision to feature a front-page photo of Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan playing softball has ignited a national discussion about why people assume that women who play the field are lesbians.

Despite being wildly popular with both sexes, the game is to gay women what stickball is to Brooklyn.

"Throughout history, softball has been a focal point for lesbian women, so, in a sense, there's a kernel of truth in the stereotype," said Pat Griffin, author of "Strong Women, Deep Closets: Lesbians and Homophobia in Sport."

    • Hacked Twitter accounts are selling briskly on Russian cybercriminal forums, with fraud artists and spammers paying between $100 and $200 for batches of 1,000 accounts, depending on number of followers the accounts have, according to a Russian security researcher.
In many cases the buyers are conducting a lucrative trade by hawking phony antivirus products via tweets sent through these accounts. "The technique of stealing account credentials and posting malicious links on Twitter is more and more popular," and has surged in the past two months, says Costin Raiu, director of the global research and analysis group for the Moscow-based antivirus company Kaspersky Lab. "Cybercriminals are recognizing that social networking sites can be abused very efficiently for their needs."

    • The Los Angeles City Council, protesting Arizona’s crackdown on illegal immigration, on Wednesday voted to ban most city travel to Arizona and future contracts with companies in that state.

During a morning-long debate on the resolution, council members compared Arizona’s action to Nazi Germany and the beginning of the Holocaust, as well as the internment and deportation of Japanese Americans during World War II. A new Arizona law, which will take effect July 23, will require police to determine whether people they stop are in the country illegally, which critics say will lead to racial profiling.

    • To that end, Palin addressed the issue of her endorsement of Carly Fiorina during her speech. Without mentioning Fiorina by name, Palin defended the California Senate candidate as “pro-life, pro-business,” and underscored Fiorina’s conservative credentials. Activists need to back the “best conservatives we can elect,” Palin said, and said that activists have to have some pragmatism about electability. Palin took a more veiled shot at Tom Campbell by noting that Fiorina was a better conservative choice than some of the alternatives.
    • Republicans have solidified support among voters who had drifted from the party in recent elections, putting the GOP in position for a strong comeback in November's mid-term campaign, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.
The findings suggest that public opinion has hardened in advance of the 2010 elections, making it tougher for Democrats to translate their legislative successes, or a tentatively improving U.S. economy, into gains among voters.

Republicans have reassembled their coalition by reconnecting with independents, seniors, blue-collar voters, suburban women and small town and rural voters—all of whom had moved away from the party in the 2006 elections, in which Republicans lost control of the House. Those voter groups now favor GOP control of Congress.

    • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned the United States and other Western nations on Thursday against imposing unilateral sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, Interfax news agency reported.

The European Union has said it may impose unilateral sanctions if a U.N. Security Council resolution fails.

U.S. President Barack Obama's administration has been lobbying Western companies not to do business with Iran, but has not imposed sanctions against them.

Countries facing Security Council sanctions "cannot under any circumstances be the subject of one-sided sanctions imposed by one or other government bypassing the Security Council", Lavrov was quoted as saying by Interfax.

Of course, Bush did nothing against Iran and it is likely Israel will now be forced into a military confrontation with Iran

Updated: Sarah Palin Hits Highland Park, Illinois FLAP Over Girl’s Basketball Team

    +++++Update+++++

Here is Sarah Palin’s statement on the flap

This has-been ball player/Wasilla Warrior would like to send a shout out of support to the Highland Park High School Giants Girls Basketball Team in Illinois. These girls have been working, having bake sales, and saving money for months in order play in a hoop tournament in Arizona. They’ve won their school’s first conference title in 26 years, but now because a school bureaucrat – an assistant superintendent – wants to play politics, they’re not allowed to play ball.

Keeping girls off the court for political reasons? As I said last night in Illinois: “Them’s fightin’ words.”

The assistant superintendent claims that a trip to Arizona “would not be aligned with our beliefs and values.” But apparently the school has no problem sending kids on trips to China, which has a population control policy that is anti-girl in practice – contributing to female infanticide and abandonment and sex-selective abortions. So, is China – with its many serious human rights violations (too many to list here) – “aligned” with the “values and beliefs” of the school? But our sister-state of Arizona is not? Really? This is ridiculous and totally unfair to the girls who just want to play ball. Going to Arizona to play in a tournament will not endanger them, and the ban sure doesn’t solve the problem of unsecured borders.

These boycotts of Arizona will not help the state or lead to positive change. Economic and political boycotts of our nation’s 48th state will hurt all Arizonans – including all members of the Hispanic community. If people really want to help, they should tell President Obama to do his job: secure the border. If he were to do his job, the good people of Arizona, who have been overwhelmed by violence on their border, would not feel compelled to do it for him.

In the meantime, let’s help the girls “go rogue” and go play ball. Please take a look at this Facebook page set up on their behalf.

Let’s have our own bake sale! Let the girls play ball!

    – Sarah Palin

“Them are fightin’ words” -Former Governor Sarah Palin, at AM 560 WIND’s “An Evening with Sarah Palin”, took aim at Highland Park High School’s decision to restrict the girls basketball team from attending a tournament held in Arizona due to the state’s controversial new immigration law.

I think most American voters would agree that the Highland Park girl’s basketball team should not be used as a political pawn over illegal immigration. More good stuff on the flap here.

Remember Sarah Palin was a basketball player whose nickname was “Sarah Barracuda.”

Here is another video of Sarah from Fox News today.

More on the flap as students weigh in.

Seems like Sarah is stepping up the events before fall midterm election campaigns begin in earnest, no? And, then there is her new book due out after Labor Day.

  • Ronald Reagan,  Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin to Announce Presidential Campaign February 6, 2011?

Sarah Palin in Chicago last night

I think it is very probable and so do others.

Let’s face it folks, Sarah may not have had enough time to gain some experience but she is a better candidate to run against Obama than Romney, Huckabee or Pawlenty. Even if she loses to Obama, the others will certainly do so. Plus, she gains the presumed nomination in 2016 when she has a real shot at the White House.

I think Palin fears that waiting will also enable other conservative candidates like Senator Jim DeMint to gain a foothold and threaten her.

So, why not choose Ronald Reagan’s birthday next February 6th? There will be quite a party at the Reagan LIbrary.

  • Barbara Boxer,  Day By Day

Day By Day May 13, 2010 – Cry

Day By Day by Chris Muir

The LEFT or progressives are very good with whimpering and crying for sympathetic causes. It is how they win the hearts and minds. And, fundraise.

Look, for example, at left-wing California Senator Barbara Boxer calling for the permanent ban of offshore oil drilling in California. Of course, the oil rig disaster off Louisiana is horrible. But, Boxer is pandering to extremist environmentalists who pay for her campaigns.

    Why?

There is already a moratorium on new off-shore oil development in California.

Just more hot air and symbolism over substance.
