    • Texas House restricts cities aiding illegal immigrants – The Texas House of Representatives late on Monday approved a measure that seeks to crack down on cities that provide sanctuary to illegal immigrants. The measure would prohibit local governments from banning law enforcement officers asking about the immigration status of people who are lawfully detained or arrested. Republican Governor Rick Perry designated the measure as one of his emergency priorities for the legislative session.

“It simply prevents cities from telling officers to turn a blind eye to violators of federal law,” said the bill’s author, Republican Burt Solomons.

    • Poll Watch: 59% Favor Cutoff of Federal Funds to Sanctuary Cities – New legislation being considered by the House would stop all federal funding for cities that give sanctuary to illegal immigrants, and most voters like the idea. But very few believe Congress is likely to pass such a measure.A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 59% of Likely U.S. Voters favor a cutoff of federal funds to so-called sanctuary cities. Just 28% are opposed and 13% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

However, only 29% of voters think Congress is even somewhat likely to agree to cut off funds to cities that provide sanctuary for illegal immigrants. Twice as many, 55% say Congress is unlikely to take such an action. Those figures include 9% who say Congress is Very Likely to act and 11% who say action is Not At All Likely. Seventeen percent (17%) are not sure.

    • Sen. Jim DeMint: Speeches and Summits Won’t Secure the Border – President Obama’s immigration speech in El Paso today is a poor substitute for the real border security the country still desperately needs. And it was a transparent attempt to keep using illegal immigration as a campaign issue, as President Obama made no attempt to solve this problem during the two years his party held huge majorities in both houses of Congress. His own administration has not done its job to finish the border fence that is a critical part of keeping Americans safe and stopping illegal immigration.Rather than holding immigration summits at the White House with special interests and making speeches, President Obama should direct the members of his administration tasked with homeland security and patrolling the border to enact measures that have already been made law by Congress.

Five years ago, legislation was passed to build a 700-mile double-layer border fence along the southwest border. This is a promise that has not been kept.

Today, according to staff at the Department of Homeland Security, just 5 percent of the double-layer fencing is complete, only 36.3 miles.

Rep. Elton Gallegly to President Obama: Illegal Alien Amnesty Will NOT Pass the Congress

California Congressman Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley)

This is my Congressman’s response to President Obama’s MEGA-PANDER to Hispanics along the Texas-Mexican border today.

    From the press release:

U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly, (R-CA), Chairman of the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement, issued the following statement on President Obama’s call today for Congress to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants:

“Providing a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, as the President called for again today, without requiring illegal immigrants to return to their countries of origin and apply for legal status, is amnesty.

“Amnesty will not pass Congress, Mr. President. It is unfair to the 26 million American workers who are unemployed or underemployed and it is unfair to those who are waiting to legally immigrate to the United States.

“Conservatively, seven million people are working in the United States illegally. Instead of focusing on creating jobs and getting 26 million Americans back to work, the President’ proposal would give millions of illegal immigrants the opportunity to work legally in the United States, attract more illegal immigrants looking for the same opportunity, and take more jobs from American workers.”

    My Man, Elton!

I could not have said it better myself.

President 2012 Virginia Poll Watch: Obama 52% Vs. Huckabee 43%

According to the latest PPP Poll.

    Job Approval Vs. Disapproval:

    • President Barack Obama – 51% vs. 44%

Democrats are united for the President.

The biggest key for him is that he has the Democratic base completely behind him- 94% approve to only 4% who disapprove. Virginia still has a lot of white conservative Democrats, particularly in certain parts of the state, so for Obama to have almost unanimous approval within his party is very impressive. He even has more Republicans (albeit a paltry 7%) who approve of him than there are Democrats (4%) who disapprove. That’s not something we’re seeing in our polling very often right now. Independents narrowly give him good marks, 48/46, as well.

    Favorable Vs. Unfavorable:

    • Mike Huckabee – 37% Vs. 42%
    • Mitt Romney – 35% Vs. 43%
    • Newt Gingrich – 26% Vs. 54%
    • Sarah Palin – 31% Vs. 62%
    • Donald Trump – 22% vs. 69%

    General Election Head to Head:

    • Obama – 52% Vs Huckabee – 43%
    • Obama – 51% Vs. Romney – 40%
    • Obama – 54% Vs. Gingrich – 37%
    • Obama – 55% Vs. Palin – 40%
    • Obama – 54% Vs. Trump – 32%

Virginia is a key battleground sate that the GOP needs to flip in 2012. Compare the results of the most recent Washington Post poll of Virginia.

    Similar, no?

In Virginia, the GOP Presidential candidate field is not very popular and well received. If the Republicans want to take back Virginia’s Electoral College votes, they will need to run candidates other than the current field. Calling on Mitch Daniels and/or Chris Christie.

Even if Obama was unpopular in Virginia he’d still be in a decent position to win the state again because the GOP contenders are so weak there. Take those unpopular Republicans and combine them with a decently popular Obama and you have a very difficult battle for the GOP to get Virginia back. And it’s hard to imagine the party winning back the White House without Virginia- because of that fact and because of Obama’s relative strength there, this is looking to me like the most important state in the Presidential race next year.

Exactly and why Mitch Daniels or Chris Christie will jump into the race.

    The entire poll is here.

President 2012: Mitch Daniels Thinks He Can Beat President Obama

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels delivers speech at Conservative Political Action Conference in February 2011

    OK, here we go.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels says he thinks he could beat President Barack Obama in 2012. He just hasn’t decided whether he’ll try.

The Republican governor said Tuesday his chances of beating Obama would be “quite good,” but that’s not factoring into his deliberations on a White House run. He spoke to reporters after giving public service awards to state employees.

Daniels’ comments came a week after he said he wasn’t ready to debate Obama on foreign policy. They also appeared to break with a public image he’s crafted of a reluctant and self-deprecating politician.

He quickly returned to form, saying any Daniels campaign might “break down” because of him but not because of a lack of high-quality support.

Notice he did not say a generic Republican can beat Obama.

Mitch is going to run and he will announce at an opportune time or just run like Rudy Giuliani did in 2008 without a formal announcement.

    • President 2012: The Tragedy of Sarah Palin? – From the moment Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech electrified the Republican convention, she was seen as an unbending, hard-charging, red-meat ideologue—to which soon was added “thin-skinned” and “vindictive.” But a look at what Palin did while in office in Alaska—the only record she has—shows a very different politician: one who worked with Democrats to tame Big Oil and solve the great problem at the heart of the state’s politics. That Sarah Palin might have set the nation on a different course. What went wrong?======

In a radio interview on Monday morning, Christie said he’d like to see a governor in the Oval Office.

“He’s certainly somebody who I have enormous respect for and would give real consideration to supporting” Christie told talk radio host Chris Stigall, speaking of Mitch Daniels.

“If you look at it, governors have tended to be some of our best presidents. That’s why I would lean in that direction,” he said.

Daniels is weighing a run and is expected to announce his decision soon.

Stigall — who calls himself an “unabashed, gushing” fan of the New Jersey governor — noted the number of likely candidates courting Chrstie’s support in Princeton.

He’s already met with Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty, and is set to sit down with Jon Huntsman in the coming week.

President 2012: Mitch Daniels Campaign Picks Up Steam?

Well, if he announces it will.

Governor Mitch Daniel’s possible run for president continues to gain national support. A political website announced Monday that Daniels is definitely throwing his hat into the ring.

Even though Governor Daniels has yet to make an announcement, it hasn’t stopped newspapers or fellow politicians from endorsing him nor has it stopped political websites like pculcpa.com from making the decision for him.

At the American Enterprise Institute last week, Daniels tip-toed around the issue, telling reporters he didn’t think it was too late to enter the ring.

“I really thought it might become too late somewhere along the line. If it had it would have been that. But for whatever reason I think it is a happy surprise,” Daniels said.

The Governor’s wife Cheri is scheduled to give an Indiana GOP speech this Thursday but reportedly this is being downplayed by Daniel’s insiders. Frankly, with Cheri’s aversion to politics (she is actually a sane politico’s wife), if Mitch is going to go, then he should annoounce today or tomorrow and spare her the grief of all of the press questions.

But, on the other hand, maybe that is the point. Announce after her speech and spare her the follow-up questions.

On Thursday, Daniels’ notoriously politics shy wife Cheri will keynote a dinner for the Indiana Republican Party, and it has been suggested that that would be the venue for Daniels’ big moment. But people familiar with the Hoosier governor say that it’s likely to be a bit more of a wait.

“I don’t want to oversell it by any means,” said one Indiana Republican familiar with the situation of the dinner Thursday. “I don’t expect an announcement of any kind to come that night (if it does, it would be a surprise).”

A more reasonable time to look for a decision, the Republican suggested, would be closer to Memorial Day.

Governor, time to fish or cut bait – soon.
