Photo of the Day: John Edward’s Mug Shot
Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards
Nice hair for a mug shot.
Former U.S. Senator John Edwards, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and campaign law violations in early June. His mug shot was obtained by CNN following a Freedom of Information Act request.
The plea came after a federal grand jury indicted him on six counts, including conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws.
A grand jury has been investigating whether money given to support Edwards’ mistress, Rielle Hunter, by benefactors of Edwards should have been considered campaign donations, a contention Edwards’ team has disputed.

CA-36: Democrats Now Raising Money and Capitalizing on Controversial Ad Denounced by Craig Huey
LA City Councilwoman Janice Hahn (D) and Businessman Craig Huey (R) who will face off on July 12, 2011 in CA-36, Jane Harman’s Congressional District
You remember the flap and Craig Huey’s denunciation of the controversial video. But, while having nothing to do with the viral web video, the Democrats are trying to capitalize on it.Democrats are trying to capitalize on a controversial ad attacking Janice Hahn, the party’s nominee for a congressional seat in Los Angeles, that has been denounced as racist and sexist.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee says the ad, depicting Hahn as a pole dancer and black men as gangsters using derogatory language, is “despicable.” The video by a political action committee called Turn Right USA suggests that Hahn, a Los Angeles City councilwoman, has not been tough on gangs.
The DCCC hopes to raise $150,000 by Monday to fight what it calls “vile right-wing attacks like these.”
“An attack on women and minorities this blatant and offensive deserves our strongest grass-roots response,” DCCC executive director Robby Mook says in a fundraising e-mail.
So, the Democrats are talking out of both sides of their mouths.
Hahn campaign spokesman Dave Jacobson said Huey still has not gone far enough.
“Craig Huey still has not called on the the ad to be taken down. Councilwoman Hahn has called on Tea Party extremist Craig Huey to come out publicly, not only to denounce the ad, but to call for it to be taken down immediately,” he said.
I don’t think the Democrats REALLY want the ad to disappear but then again I haven’t heard them defending Janice Hahn’s record with funding the anti-gang programs either.

CA-36: Craig Huey Denounces Racist and Sexist Ad Against Janice Hahn
LA City Councilwoman Janice Hahn hearts gangsters. Learn more here.
I have known Craig Huey for over 45 years and this ad is definitely not him.California GOP congressional candidate Craig Huey is denouncing what he calls a “racist and sexist” third party web ad that depicts Janice Hahn as a stripper who is soft on gang members.
In a statement provided to POLITICO, Huey said, “Along with many other residents of the South Bay I am outraged over this racist and sexist ad. I unequivocally denounce it. It’s unfortunate that the video will receive so much attention, when voters are hoping to discuss our economy.”
“The ad was not authorized and not affiliated with my campaign. Whether people agree with my politics or not, anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I would not participate in something of this nature. The ad is blatantly racist and sexist and neither racism nor sexism has any place in the public sphere,” he continued.
Democratic groups have been calling on Huey to repudiate the inflammatory spot which has gone viral, attacking more than 93,000 YouTube hits as of this writing Wednesday afternoon.
And, I agree with Craig that the campaign should resume on the issues that most affect the California 36th Congressional District – jobs and taxes – not social issues like abortion.
“Janice Hahn has spent this campaign attempting to discuss only social issues. I have spent this campaign focusing on the issues that matter to our district: jobs, taxes and the national debt,” Huey said.
“I hope that Janice Hahn and national allies will stop dragging this campaign into the dirt. They know the ad is not from me. In fact Hahn is the only person who has approved of typical negative attack ads. Our district deserves better, and that what I stand for,” he continued.

President 2012 Poll Watch: Obama 47% Vs. Romney 45%
According to the latest PPP Poll.
November 2012 is a long way off but at this point PPP’s national polling is finding 2 tiers of electability for the Republican Presidential candidates. The first tier is Mitt Romney. The second tier is everyone else. Our monthly national poll finds Romney within 2 points of Barack Obama at 47-45, the closest he’s been in 7 months. The rest of the Republicans tested all trail the President by double digits.
Romney’s improved standing against Obama is another sign of his increasing strength with GOP voters. Obama’s level of support is pretty similar to where it’s been throughout the year but Romney’s gone from a 64 point lead with Republicans (77-13) on our last national poll to now a 77 point advantage with them (86-9) on this one. GOP partisans are increasingly saying that whether they support Romney in the primary or not, they’re happy to vote for him in the fall.
Against the rest of the Republican field Obama continues to hold comfortable leads. It’s 10 points over Herman Cain at 48-38, 11 points over Tim Pawlenty at 50-39, 13 over Newt Gingrich at 52-39, and 14 over Sarah Palin at 52-38.
So, what does this all mean?
Republican voters are becoming comfortable with Mitt Romney as the front-runner and as the potential GOP nominee. Should conservatives (other than Michele Bachmann who is already in the race) decide to run, they better declare very quickly.
Are you listening, Texas Governor Rick Perry?

CA-36: California Democrats Nervous of a Craig Huey Victory Over Janice Hahn
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn greets former Rep. Jane Harman
They probably should be very worried since Craig Huey was only behind by five points in Democrat tracking polls.Southern California Democrats are growing increasingly anxious about a special House election in a solidly blue district.
They are stepping up attacks on the wealthy tea party opponent, but Democrats’ bigger enemy in holding onto former Rep. Jane Harman’s 36th Congressional District might just be themselves.
While no one believes the race will become a reverse N.Y. 26 situation — in which Democrats notched a surprise win in a special House race where the Republican was strongly favored — they are nervous that midsummer voter apathy coupled with a disenchanted base is leaving an opening for Republican Craig Huey.
Virtually everyone expects Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn to ultimately win the July 12 election in the reliably liberal sun-soaked beach district, yet Democrats are pointing to some worrisome signs as the campaign hurtles into its final month.
Some are concerned about election fatigue; some sense the Democratic base is unmotivated. Others are just plain nervous the contest is closer than it should be.
“Am I worried about Democrats not coming out to vote on July 12? You bet,” said Eric Bauman, Los Angeles County Democratic Party chairman. “Republicans vote, and this guy is spending a lot of money.”
Craig Huey will spend what it takes and while this race is an uphill battle, I would not be surprised if Huey can eek out a victory. Remember the economy is very poor in this area of Los Angeles and Republican voters WILL turn out in July.
And, if not this election, then in 2012, when the district becomes more Republican in registration.
Stay tuned….

President 2012: Rudy Giuliani to Meet with Chris Christie and Rick Perry Today
Rudy Giuliani when he endorsed soon to be elected New Jersey Governor Chris Christie in 2009
Well, Rudy endorsed Chris Christie when he ran for New Jersey Governor and Texas Governor Rick Perry endorsed Rudy in 2008 when Giuliani ran for President. So, hence the meetings since Rudy continues to show interest in a 2012 Presidential race.Rudy Giuliani and Chris Christie, two former federal prosecutors and two similar political models, are set to have lunch Wednesday, sources confirmed.
The meeting will be on the heels of a Giuliani meeting with Rick Perry. Both men are considering a presidential run.
Christie has said repeatedly that he isn’t.
But the Giuliani and Christie meeting comes at a time when the former mayor has said he is seriously looking at his political future, and as some national Republicans are still hoping to lure the New Jersey governor into the race.
I would love to be a fly on the wall during these meetings.
But, my guess is Rudy is lining up support should Sarah Palin decide to throw her hat in the ring and divide the conservative vote in the GOP primaries. Otherwise, Rudy will be on board with either Perry or Christie should one of them decide to run and Rudy doesn’t.
Rudy would go on the stump in Florida for Rick Perry and would definitely hurt Mitt Romney there. And, could deliver a goodly number of East Coast and California GOP delegates for the Texas Governor.
Giuliani will make a terrific Attorney General or Vice President.
