Flap’s Links and Comments for September 2nd through September 6th
These are my links for September 2nd through September 6th:
- Rescue those Boeing jobs in South Carolina – You have to wonder about a federal agency that sticks it to an American manufacturer creating thousands of good-paying jobs inside the nation's borders instead of overseas.
Fortunately, we hope, you won't have to wonder about it for long. We suspect the end is near for the brief reign of an overbearing pro-union majority on the National Labor Relations Board. That should help to lift an economy in dire need of job creation. It also should lift Chicago's Boeing Corp., the manufacturer targeted in an outrageous NLRB complaint earlier this year.
With little fanfare, board Chair Wilma Liebman left the agency after her term expired Aug. 27. President Barack Obama's recess appointment of another board member, labor lawyer Craig Becker, runs out Dec. 31. Combined with a long-standing vacancy, those departures would leave just two of the board's five seats occupied. So in the absence of any new appointments — which Republicans have vowed to block — the board will fall short of a quorum.
Good.
Don't get us wrong, the NLRB has important work to do. It investigates unfair labor practices and monitors union elections. Trouble is, the agency swerved left after the Obama administration stacked the board in favor of unions. Better to temporarily deactivate the board than to keep it going in its current direction.

Wonder if Chicago Tribune will endorse Obama this time around?
- Calls for more regulatory restraint come after Obama halts EPA Ozone Plan – Now that President Barack Obama has stopped Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson from continuing with her plan to tighten ozone regulations, it’s unclear if the politically embattled chief executive will halt additional administrative rules.
In his letter to Jackson, Obama’s regulatory czar Cass Sunstein said the president directed him to “minimize regulatory costs and burdens” in all agencies. Republican leaders and industry groups are jumped on that promise Friday, demanding new cutbacks on more of the regulatory burdens they say his administration has placed on the economy.
“I am glad that the President has finally recognized the job-killing potential of these EPA regulations,” House Majority Whip Rep. Kevin McCarthy said in a statement, adding that he is “hopeful that the President will continue down this road of lifting excessive burdens so the economy can grow and we can get people back to work.”

- House Republicans paint target on NLRB’s proposed union election rules – House Republicans plan to move on legislation in the coming weeks to block a proposed rule by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that will speed up union elections.
The proposal, backed by labor but heavily criticized by business groups, was tagged as one of the 10 most harmful regulations proposed by the Obama administration in a memo sent by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to House Republicans this week.
"The hope is to move forward in the coming weeks with a proposal that will rein in the NLRB, and protect employers’ right to free speech and workers’ ability to make a fully-informed decision in a union election," a House Republican aide told The Hill.
In his memo, Cantor said the labor board’s proposed rule will afford “little time” to employers and workers who do not want to unionize.
“This summer, the NLRB issued a notice of proposed rulemaking that could significantly alter current union representation election procedures, giving both employers and employees little time to react to union formations in the future. The result will increase labor costs and uncertainty for nearly all private employers in the U.S,” Cantor said in the memo.======

President 2012 GOP Poll Watch: Rick Perry Best-Positioned Candidate
According to the latest Gallup Poll.Perry’s combination of high name recognition and a high Positive Intensity Score help make him the best-positioned candidate for the Republican nomination at this point, underscored by his lead in Republican nomination preferences. Cain’s enthusiastic support is offset by his low name recognition, and other well-known candidates like Romney, Michele Bachmann, and Ron Paul, do not generate the same level of intense feeling as Perry.
It is CW that Texas Governor Rick Perry is now the front-runner for the GOP Presidential nomination. Will the rest of the GOP field start to pick on him, in concert, tomorrow night during the debate?
I would say YES.
Perry’s rise in the polls makes him the candidate to beat for the Republican nomination at the moment. His front-runner status means he will increasingly come under attack from his rivals on the campaign trail and in coming Republican candidate debates. The increased criticism could have a negative effect on the way Republicans view him, though if he responds well Republicans may view him in a more positive light.
As the campaign unfolds, it will be clear whether it is sufficient for Republicans to like someone in order to tap him or her as their party’s presidential nominee, as would appear to be the case if they nominate Romney or one of several other candidates including Bachmann, Paul, and Palin or Giuliani should they run. Or does the nominee need to generate a sufficiently high level of enthusiasm among the party base in order to win the nomination, as is the case for Perry, even if he is no better liked in a broad sense than many of the other contenders.

President 2012 GOP Poll Watch: Perry 36% Vs. Romney 17% vs. Bachmann and Paul 10%
Texas Governor Rick Perry (C) speaks at a media conference in Bastrop, Texas September 5, 2011. An estimated 1,000 homes are being threatened in Bastrop County, just east of Austin, as a 14,000-acre (5700-hectare) wildfire rages out of control, causing evacuations
According to the latest Politico/George Washington University Battleground Poll. The Politico/George Washington University Battleground Poll has Perry atop the field with 36 percent, followed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at 17 percent and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Texas Rep. Ron Paul tied at 10 percent.
The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll delivered similar results. Perry is 38 percent of respondent’s first choice for the nomination, followed by Romney at 23 percent, Paul at 9 percent and Bachmann at 8 percent.
These polls are only the most recent to show Perry out in front of the field. Earlier polls from Gallup, Quinnipiac and CNN/ORC International all show a similar picture of the field.
Perry, the most recent entrant into the race, announced his run on Aug. 13, the same day that Bachmann won the Ames Straw Poll in the first-in-the-nation caucus state of Iowa.
Since that high point in her campaign, Bachmann has slipped in the polls.
Bachmann’s former campaign manager Ed Rollins, who stepped down Monday due to health problems, said Perry’s entrance “took a lot of our momentum.”
“Legitimately, it’s a Romney-Perry race,” Rollins said. “I think she’s the third candidate at this point in time, which is way different and better than we thought when we started this thing. She’s very much in this thing.”
The race for the GOP nomination will continue to evolve in September, a month that features three debates, including CNN’s “Tea Party Republican Debate” on Sept. 12 in Tampa Florida.
The Politico/George Washington University Battleground Poll surveyed 1,000 likely voters over the phone and was conducted between Aug. 28 and Sept. 1. The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
And, remember that tomorrow evening’s GOP Presidential debate will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. This will be the first debate that Rick Perry will mix it up with all of the other candidates. It will be televised on MSNBC starting at 5 PM PDT.

President 2012 Poll Watch: Obama Hits All-Time Lows
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
According to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll.
When Barack Obama unveils his jobs and economic plan to a joint session of Congress on Thursday, he’ll do so at the lowest point of his presidency, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
After the bruising debt-ceiling fight — as well as Standard & Poor’s subsequent downgrade of the nation’s credit rating — Obama’s job approval rating has sunk to a low of 44 percent, a 3-point drop since July. His handling of the economy stands at a low of 37 percent. And only 19 percent believe the country is headed in the right direction, the lowest mark for this president.
Perhaps most ominously for Obama, a majority of poll takers — 54 percent — think he’s facing a longer-term setback from which he’s unlikely to recover. Back in January, just 39 percent agreed with that assessment.
Indeed, that 54 percent is virtually identical to George W. Bush’s score on the same question in the Nov. 2005 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, which was released just months after Bush’s widely criticized handling of Hurricane Katrina.
As the polls have been trending, President Obama is in trouble and not a sure bet to win re-election next year.
Although voters appear to like the President, it is all about the economy and he will sink or swim on this issue in the next year. The Obama ship of state is listing from side to side and it bears watching if a Republican Presidential candidate can finish it off with a torpedo.
Stay tuned….
