- Rescue those Boeing jobs in South Carolina – You have to wonder about a federal agency that sticks it to an American manufacturer creating thousands of good-paying jobs inside the nation's borders instead of overseas.
Fortunately, we hope, you won't have to wonder about it for long. We suspect the end is near for the brief reign of an overbearing pro-union majority on the National Labor Relations Board. That should help to lift an economy in dire need of job creation. It also should lift Chicago's Boeing Corp., the manufacturer targeted in an outrageous NLRB complaint earlier this year.
With little fanfare, board Chair Wilma Liebman left the agency after her term expired Aug. 27. President Barack Obama's recess appointment of another board member, labor lawyer Craig Becker, runs out Dec. 31. Combined with a long-standing vacancy, those departures would leave just two of the board's five seats occupied. So in the absence of any new appointments — which Republicans have vowed to block — the board will fall short of a quorum.
Good.
Don't get us wrong, the NLRB has important work to do. It investigates unfair labor practices and monitors union elections. Trouble is, the agency swerved left after the Obama administration stacked the board in favor of unions. Better to temporarily deactivate the board than to keep it going in its current direction.

Wonder if Chicago Tribune will endorse Obama this time around?
- Calls for more regulatory restraint come after Obama halts EPA Ozone Plan – Now that President Barack Obama has stopped Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson from continuing with her plan to tighten ozone regulations, it’s unclear if the politically embattled chief executive will halt additional administrative rules.
In his letter to Jackson, Obama’s regulatory czar Cass Sunstein said the president directed him to “minimize regulatory costs and burdens” in all agencies. Republican leaders and industry groups are jumped on that promise Friday, demanding new cutbacks on more of the regulatory burdens they say his administration has placed on the economy.
“I am glad that the President has finally recognized the job-killing potential of these EPA regulations,” House Majority Whip Rep. Kevin McCarthy said in a statement, adding that he is “hopeful that the President will continue down this road of lifting excessive burdens so the economy can grow and we can get people back to work.”

- House Republicans paint target on NLRB’s proposed union election rules – House Republicans plan to move on legislation in the coming weeks to block a proposed rule by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that will speed up union elections.
The proposal, backed by labor but heavily criticized by business groups, was tagged as one of the 10 most harmful regulations proposed by the Obama administration in a memo sent by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to House Republicans this week.
"The hope is to move forward in the coming weeks with a proposal that will rein in the NLRB, and protect employers’ right to free speech and workers’ ability to make a fully-informed decision in a union election," a House Republican aide told The Hill.
In his memo, Cantor said the labor board’s proposed rule will afford “little time” to employers and workers who do not want to unionize.
“This summer, the NLRB issued a notice of proposed rulemaking that could significantly alter current union representation election procedures, giving both employers and employees little time to react to union formations in the future. The result will increase labor costs and uncertainty for nearly all private employers in the U.S,” Cantor said in the memo.======
