CA-26: Tony Strickland Announces First Day Fundraising Total of $318K

California State Senator Tony Strickland at yesterday’s Congressional announcement

    From the press release:

One day after he launched his campaign for Congress, State Senator Tony Strickland announced that he has raised $317,915 in his first day as a candidate for the newly drawn 26th Congressional District.

“I’m running for Congress because it’s time to put an end to politics as usual that has left too many in Ventura County worrying about their future,” said Strickland. “I’m honored that so many are uniting behind our campaign to create more jobs and opportunities for every citizen.”

The funds raised to date come from a diverse community of supporters including small business owners, community leaders, and working families throughout the Congressional District.

“I’m humbled that so many have joined me in this effort in just one day,” concluded Strickland.

The total of $317,915 in one day alone would place Strickland among the top funded Congressional candidates the country for the previous three-month quarter. Noteworthy about the influx of financial support is that none of the contributions reflect transfers of any kind from Strickland’s state senate campaign account and only represent new financial contributors.

Not a bad first day of fundraising at all.

But, remember that Democrat Rep. Brad Sherman who is rumored looking at this Congressional District has over $3.5 Million already in the bank.

There is little doubt that this contested race will be very expensive and in the multi-millions of dollars expended when the dust clears in November.

President 2012 GOP Poll Watch: Newt Gingrich Making a Comeback? 3 Points Behind Romney

Perhaps, according to the latest Rasmussen Poll.

The race for the Republican presidential nomination is now nearly even with Mitt Romney still on top but Newt Gingrich just three points apart.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters nationwide shows Romney with 30% support and Gingrich with 27% of the vote. Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, who was running second two weeks ago, has now dropped to 15%.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul captures 13% support from likely primary voters, and Texas Governor Rick Perry remains in last place with four percent (4%). Another four percent (4%) like some other candidate in the race, and seven percent (7%) are undecided.

But, the big story here is Gingrich’s resurgence and Santorum’s seeming collapse. This poll was taken Tuesday night after the last South Carolina debate in which Gingrich was the CLEAR winner.

Is there enough time for Gingrich to surge in South Carolina?

But the story in the new numbers, taken Tuesday night, is Gingrich’s jump 11 points from 16% two weeks ago. Romney’s support is essentially unchanged from 29% at that time, while Santorum is down six points from 21%. Paul’s and Perry’s support is also unchanged. Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman earned four percent (4%) of the vote at the start of the month but dropped out of the race this week. This suggests that many voters are still looking for an alternative to Romney and currently see Gingrich as that candidate.

Will Sarah Palin’s pronouncement last night on Fox News help?

Day By Day January 18, 2012 – Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the PROTECT IP Act in the Senate

Day By Day by Chris Muir

    Just say NO.

Wikipedia and thousands of other websites went black Wednesday to protest two anti-piracy bills in Congress, and the dramatic virtual demonstration quickly seemed to be making an impact.

The protest quickly caught the attention of Net users across America and prompted a frenzy of media coverage, while exacerbating the divide between Silicon Valley and Hollywood over the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the PROTECT IP Act in the Senate.

At the same time, signs pointed to a possible political shift on Capitol Hill. Arizona Republican Rep. Ben Quayle pulled his support of the House’s anti-piracy measure just a day before websites like Wikipedia, Reddit and others went dark, while a spokesman for GOP Rep. Lee Terry told a local Nebraska newspaper on Wednesday that the congressman will withdraw his backing too.

It all began at midnight, as the English version of Wikipedia went offline. Blogging software WordPress “censored” items on its home page, while Craigslist hit visitors with a call to action. Google stayed open for search, but covered the company logo with a black box. Mozilla and Reddit joined the protest at 8 a.m.

Members of Congress – stop it!
