So obscure that his conviction for four murders barely made headlines, death row inmate Stanley Tookie Williams owes his notoriety as much to a determined woman who stood by him and to committed death penalty opponents as to his shift from gangster to anti-gang activist.

During a jailhouse visit in 1993 to research a book on gangs, writer Barbara Becnel discovered that Williams, who is scheduled to be executed Dec. 13, had renounced his gang past. Over the next two years, Becnel shed her doubts about the co-founder of the Crips and helped him work to persuade youths to avoid gangs.

She arranged for Williams to speak by telephone to youth and criminal justice groups, and edited his series of children’s books. Death penalty opponents also took up his cause, pushing him into the limelight by nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize and the Nobel Prize for literature, prestigious nominations that are surprisingly easy to make.

Eventually Becnel negotiated a deal for the movie “Redemption,” which starred Jamie Foxx as Williams.

Too bad Becnel did not raise money for victim’s rights.

Does Tookie deserve the BIG JAB?

A correction to what was previously reported:

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will NOT be meeting with the victims’ family members at the December 8th clemency hearing – ONLY THEIR ATTORNEYS.

And although half serious, there is now talk in Republican circles to challenge Governor Schwarzenegger from the RIGHT in next June’s GOP Primary.

Flap thinks this will become more of a reality if the Governator goes LIMP and grants clemency for Tookie Williams.

    I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE FACT THAT THOSE WHO FEEL THAT HE SHOWS NO REMORSE TOWARD THE CRIMES HE WAS TO HAVE COMMITTED HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, HE SHOWS HIS REMORSE BY GIVING BACK LIFE TO THOSE WHO ARE TRYING TO WALK THE SAME ROAD THAT HE ONCE WALKED. WOULD YOU NOT WISH TO BE FORGIVEN FOR THE THINGS THAT YOU SOMETIMES MAY EVEN THINK,,, DEAR FATHER AND MOST HIGH GOD, GOD OF THE MILKYWAY THE EARTH AND ALL WITHIN IN. LORD FORGIVE MAN AGAIN FOR THE SINS OF THERE HEARTS,LORD IF IT IS YOUR WILL THAT MR. WILLIAMS BE PUT TO DEATH THEN SO BE IT, HE IS BEING HATED WITH THE SAME HATE THEY CLAIMED HE USED TO DISTROY OTHER PEOPLES LIVES. I ASK THAT YOU WILL BE THE FINAL JUDGE LORD IN THIS MATTER AND THAT YOU WILL KEEP TOOKIES MIND AND NOT LET HIM LOOSE HEART DUE TO THE HATE THAT IS BEING SHOWN TO HIM BY THOSE WHO HAVE MURDERED IN THERE HEARTS.     It’s something called “justice.” He took lives, and yet it is all about him. He will refuse a “last meal” because he rejects the food from the people who are going to kill HIM.

    Now, think about that for a moment. It’s never been about the crimes HE has committed, and the pain he’s inflicted upon others. It isn’t about the law of the state of California, and the rule of law that governs us. It’s all about HIM.

    Mr. Williams forfeited his rights to live as a citizen of a civilized society when he made the choice of being a violent murderer. His “remorse” that you speak of (e.g. “giving back life to those who are trying to walk the same road he walked) only came to be because the law made Mr. Williams to have to pay for his crimes. Had they failed to do so, or had not arrested him at all, he would still be committing crimes against the community at large, and he would have nothing on his account for folks like yourself to speak of.

    If Mr. Williams was a real man who had owned up to his past, he wouldn’t be so focused upon himself and what other people “are doing to him.” The fact that he cannot see past himself, and that his death is a direct result of his actions shows me that he does not understand anything besides what it all means to him.

    Also, your prayers to God fall upon deaf ears, because you do not understand what any of this means either. You believe that this is all about Mr. Williams too. You do not understand what the rule of law means, and that God is a God of truth AND justice. “Tookie” TOOK life that God gave, and according to the WORD, he must be made accountable for his sin–not only against society, but against God’s commandments.
