Reuters has Schwarzenegger still undecided on gang leader

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will not decide on Sunday whether to grant clemency to former Crips gang leader Stanley Tookie Williams, who is slated to be executed this week for murdering four people in 1979, his office said.

As Williams awaited the clemency decision, his lawyers sought to prevent his scheduled Tuesday execution with a new petition to the California Supreme Court.

Barring clemency or last-minute court intervention, officials will administer a lethal injection to Williams at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday in the death chamber at San Quentin State Prison.

“Mr. Williams has maintained his innocence since the day he was arrested,” Attorney Verna Wefald wrote in the petition filed to the state’s top court on Saturday.

The Governor will probably wait until the California Supreme Court rejects this latest plea. The court could grant an emergency stay and the death watch will be going on and on and on………

Still no decision from Gov. Schwarzenegger. The clock is ticking. SFChronicle reports:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger did not announce his decision Saturday regarding Stanley Tookie Williams’ request for clemency, giving him less than two days to decide whether Williams should be spared the lethal injection he is scheduled to receive at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

Administration officials have not said when the governor will accept or reject Williams’ clemency plea.

Williams’ last legal appeal was denied last week by the state Supreme Court, but lawyers for the Death Row inmate have not ruled out more last-minute appeals.

Exhibits pertaining to the case were filed with the U.S. Supreme Court and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals late Friday that would be part of an appeal request, although Jonathan Harris, an attorney for Williams, said the filing did not necessarily mean attorneys would file an appeal.

Harris would not describe what exhibits were filed with the court.
