Illegal Immigration Watch: Great American Boycott 2006 Mid-Day Round-Up

Mary Katherine Ham over at Hugh Hewitt’s blog has a good mid-day round-up of boycott activities:

Michelle Malkin has a big round-up on the immigration rallies today.

So does Instapundit, who heard from Roger Simon in California that the size of the crowd is incredible.

Roger describes the protestors:

A lot of the organization from the downtown demonstration came, alas, from ANSWER and their extremist ilk, but that didn’t stop us from being moved by the demonstrators and their earnest desire to be Americans and to find honest work here. Nevertheless, there were some among them who wanted, unfortunately, the whole enchilada, the return of California to Mexico. But when you interview these people (you will see the results later), you find some are more confused than anything else. For the most part, they just want to work and raise families. They are being exploited by leaders singing a very old and tired song.

Kim at Wizbang! comments on the A.N.S.W.E.R. connection:

The protests’ organizers, ANSWER, a communist organization founded by Ramsey Clark, have convinced the illegal and legal immigrants that they are the oppressed “proletariat” exploited by the “bourgeoisie,” which is why they use language (we clean your toilets, we watch your children, we pick your fruit and vegetables) that pits the illegal and legal immigrants against the middle class. This is classic communist propaganda meant to “empower” the masses of the “oppressed” immigrants and to intimidate congress and the American people into giving illegal immigrants full amnesty.

Grrrr, Commies.

John Hawkins applauds Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) for making this request of the ICE:

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should pursue the multiple reports in the news media today regarding companies which have been forced to halt operations because large numbers of their employees appear to be in the United States illegally and are participating in the protest rallies.ICE has an obligation to use this public information to enforce immigration laws. We respectfully request that you look into this matter and report back to us on your findings.

Tancredo points out what an actual, full boycott would mean:

Hospital emergency rooms across the southwest would have about 20-percent fewer patients, and there would be 183,000 fewer people in Colorado without health insurance.OBGYN wards in Denver would have 24-percent fewer deliveries and Los Angeles’s maternity-ward deliveries would drop by 40 percent and maternity billings to Medi-Cal would drop by 66 percent.

Youth gangs would see their membership drop by 50 percent in many states, and in Phoenix, child-molestation cases would drop by 34 percent and auto theft by 40 percent.

In Durango, Colorado, and the Four Corners area and the surrounding Indian reservations, the methamphetamine epidemic would slow for one day, as the 90 percent of that drug now being brought in from Mexico was held in Albuquerque and Farmington a few hours longer. According to the sheriff of La Plata County, Colorado, meth is now being brought in by ordinary illegal aliens as well as professional drug dealers.

Darleen points out the Mexican policy on illegal immigrants.

My co-worker Josue thinks this is all going to backfire, big-time:

Mark my words–this is going to backfire on them. America has woken up to the reality of reconquista–a minority but a real threat–and to the problem of illegal immigration. To top it off, to most American citizens, the release of “Nuestro Himon” is an alarming afront on the traditions of the American culture. This is not the way for illegal immigrants to gain a popularity contest as a guest in a foreign country.

Josue also appeared on Tammy Bruce’s show today. She has kind, true words about him.

Michelle Malkin has A DAY TO HATE THE YANQUIS

Welcome to May 1. It’s the day to hate the Yankees. That is: Americans, not the baseball team. Via Mexidata:

In Mexico, what began as a vague appeal for cross-border solidarity on the Internet is snowballing into a movement as well. In various parts of the country, labor unions, regional and local business groups, and ex-bracero associations are supporting a one-day boycott of US products and businesses.”For me, the protest serves a double purpose: I get to support the immigrants and I also get to express my slightly anti-Yankee sentiments,” said Mexico City cafe owner Joaquin Garcia Nava.

As in the United States, the Roman Catholic Church is adding legitimacy, voice and presence to the movement. And the bishops of the Mexican border cities of Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, Mexicali, Nogales, Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo, and Piedras Negras have all endorsed the May 1 action.

Lonewacko keeps track of the who’s who behind the boycott.

Tom Tancredo imagines What If.

North Carolina got a jump-start with an illegal alien rally yesterday. The Cultural Report has photos and details, and witnessed one zealot urging illegal immigrants to “Break the rules!”

The Open Borders Business List (via AP):

Some big businesses were shutting down operations: Six of 14 Perdue Farms plants will close; Gallo Wines in Sonoma, Calif., was giving its 150 employees the day off; Tyson Foods Inc., the world’s largest meat producer, planned to shut five of its nine beef plants and four of six pork plants.
