Representative William Jefferson Watch: Jefferson Refuses to Quit Ways and Means Committee

Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., takes part in a Capitol Hill news conference, Monday, May 22, 2006. The FBI revealed Sunday that Jefferson, under investigation for bribery, was videotaped accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded.

ASSociated Press: Jefferson refuses to quit Ways and Means

Democrats sought to get embattled Rep. William Jefferson to resign his seat on the House’s most prestigious committee.

“In the interest of upholding the high ethical standard of the House Democratic Caucus, I am writing to request your immediate resignation from the Ways and Means Committee,” wrote House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi in the one-sentence correspondence.

All Nany Pelosi is doing is covering her own ASS. Does she REALLY want Jefferson to resign?

NO WAY!

The Louisiana Democrat was defiant.

“With respect, I decline to do so,” he wrote back to Pelosi.”I will not give up a committee assignment that is so vital to New Orleans at this crucial time for any uncertain, long-term political strategy.”

And what is the DUMBASS Speaker of the House doing?

Earlier, House Speaker Dennis Hastert demanded that the FBI surrender documents it seized and remove agents involved in the weekend raid of Jefferson’s office, under what lawmakers of both parties said were unconstitutional circumstances.

“We think those materials ought to be returned,” Hastert said, adding that the FBI agents involved “ought to be frozen out of that (case) just for the sake of the constitutional aspects of it.”

Mr. Speaker, how about scheduling a vote to throw this miscreant off of the Ways and Means Committee until further investigation?

I mean, my God, the FBI has him taking a bribe on tape and they found the cold hard cash in his freezer!

No, the Speaker of the House is MORE worried about the “balance of power” between the branches of government.

This is BULL.

Remember the First Plank of the Republican Contract with America?

On the first day of the 104th Congress, the new Republican majority will immediately pass the following major reforms, aimed at restoring the faith and trust of the American people in their government:

  • FIRST, require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply equally to the Congress;

Flap doesn’t know who is more pathetic Jefferson or the House GOP leadership??

    Hey Flap –

William Jefferson should resign from Congress, not just his Ways and Means post, immediately. The GOP is corrupt to the core and doesn’t want to be investigated for their own, ahem, indiscretions. Jefferson is one bad apple and should go. The GOP is a cesspool from top to bottom.

And now this, today, from ABC News:

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, is under investigation by the FBI, which is seeking to determine his role in an ongoing public corruption probe into members of Congress, ABC News has learned from senior U.S. law enforcement officials.

Federal officials say the information implicating Hastert was developed from convicted lobbyists who are now cooperating with the government.

Part of the investigation involves a letter Hastert wrote three years ago, urging the Secretary of the Interior to block a casino on an Indian reservation that would have competed with other tribes.

The other tribes were represented by convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff who reportedly has provided details of his dealings with Hastert as part of his plea agreement with the government.

The letter was written shortly after a fund-raiser for Hastert at a restaurant owned by Abramoff. Abramoff and his clients contributed more than $26,000 at the time.

The day Abramoff was indicted, Hastert denied any unlawful connection and said he would donate to charity any campaign contribution he had received from Abramoff and his clients.

A spokesman for Speaker Hastert told ABC News, “We are not aware of this. The Speaker has a long history and a well-documented record of opposing Indian Reservation shopping for casino gaming purposes.”

This week, Hastert has been outspoken in his criticism of the FBI for its raid on the office of another congressman under investigation, Democrat William Jefferson of Louisiana.
