An Israeli soldier carries a shell to a mobile artillery unit as it fires a 155mm shell toward Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon at a military staging area outside the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shemona. The United States is expediting an arms shipment of precision bombs to Israel from an arms deal struck last year amid the Jewish state’s ongoing assault on Lebanon, a US official said.

AFP: US and Israel ready to support NATO-led force in Lebanon

The United States and Israel said that they were ready to support an international force led by NATO in south Lebanon to ease tensions.

No US troops are likely to be in the force, which according to a US media report could be between 10,000 and 20,000 strong and led by a contingent from France or Turkey.

There could be delicate questions, however, over whether the force’s mission is to disarm Hezbollah or to support the Lebanese army’s efforts to take control in the south of the country.

Any international force would have to enhance Israel’s security and disarm Hezbollah or why bother?

The Lebanonese government and United Nations (UNIFIL) have been incompetent in dealing with Hezbollah and their terrorist attacks on Israel. A NATO force empowered to disarm and maintain the peace and a de-militarized border may well defuse the situation.

Captain Ed discusses how this plan will isolate Syria and Iran from their Hezbollah clients.
