Reuters: Senior Democrat renews call for military draft

An influential Democratic lawmaker on Sunday called for reinstatement of the draft as a way to boost U.S. troop levels and draw a broader section of the population into the military or public service.

U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, the incoming chairman of the House of Representatives’ tax-writing committee, said he would introduce legislation to reinstate the draft as soon as the new, Democratic-controlled Congress convenes in January.

Asked on CBS’ “Face the Nation” if he was still serious about the proposal for a universal draft he raised a couple of years ago, he said, “You bet your life. Underscore serious.”

Uh – NO!

The all-volunteer army has been working well the past thirty plus years. Why would America need more troops?

The Iraq War WILL wind down and NATO troop commitments should be decreased. Hence, less troops.

Any Iran incursion would not involve any land troops unless there was a declaration of war. Of course then there would be a massive all nation call-up.

Rangel likes politics and government. This initiative is right in character.

I am 25 years old and have never been able to join the Army do to some O.W.I’s and am full of guilt, shame and remorse that I will not be released off of probation untill I am 28 years old because I would love nothing better than to serve my country and make amends to our society. People who do not support the war or the draft are people who take this country for granted. They cried for us to do something on 9/11 and now some are whineing about being there. I support Charles Rangle and his push to reinstate the draft. I believe that it should be mandatory to serve at least 2 years in the service before one is 21.
I may never be able to serve my country like I want to unless my mircle ticket was pulled by the Draft but our country needs more people and some dont relize how much more important their lives would be untill they were drafted. If the Army would allow some people who are on probation for alcohol/driving related offenses to be “volunteery drafted” then I would be in Iraq 2 years ago and probablly still be there. I got lost along time ago and have found myself again after 13 years of hardship but for me its probablly to late. So reinstate the draft so others who have dreams can earn their way back home with us. I am ashamed to now that I cannot enlist and replace a soldier who has been away from their family for along time or whom has never met their first child.I would do anything to replace someone who has been overthere for ever and a day so that they can have time to be with their kids or loved ones.I have had 5 great years with my son while others have lost a few years or have only seen a picture of their kid. I beg of this country to reinstate the draft so that others can come back home..not just in Iraq but all over the world. Sincerly Kevin Johnson 25 Ft. Wayne IN. PROUD to be an AMERICAN..unlike some!!!!!
