U.S. President George W. Bush waves upon his arrival on the snow-covered South Lawn of the White House in Washington, January 22, 2007. Bush returned from a weekend at the Camp David Presidential retreat where he worked on his annual State of the Union address that he is scheduled to deliver on January 23.

Reuters: Millions could see taxes up in Bush health plan

About 30 million Americans could face a tax hike under President George W. Bush’s plan to expand health insurance coverage and address rising health care costs, the White House said on Monday.

“There are always going to be some winners and some losers, but the people who might initially be losers have options,” Kate Baicker, a member of the White House Council of Economic Advisors, told reporters.

There are about 47 million people with no health insurance in a country of 300 million. Baicker said Bush’s tax proposal would result in “upwards of 3 million or more newly insured people.”

Bush plans to highlight the plan in Tuesday’s State of the Union speech to the U.S. Congress.

Wow, socialism/tax redistribution and a massive middle class TAX INCREASE.

Remember “READ MY LIPS?”

This plan is a LOSER and almost as bad as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s radical health care proposal. And the WORD in California is that the Governator’s health care reform proposal is DEAD ON ARRIVAL.

But don’t forget the 150,000 medical doctors. Forget about managed care, imposing medical decisions on doctors by high school graduates, and forget about huge mal-practice premiums….the docs are organizing and are in an ugly mood. Nothing in 35 years have galvanized doctors since the mal-practice crisis. And, they are all furious with the Governor.

But, the Democrat’s plan is even WORSE – UNIVERSAL SINGLE PAYOR GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTH CARE.

The President’s health care plan is DODDEAD ON DELIVERY.

Stay tuned……..

We need some people in this country to get real. I agree that a single payer system would be a disaster but it is coming soon to your local neighborhood if something is not done soon to increase the accessibility and affordability of health care.

I am a Benefits Director for a Fortune 500 company and from what I have seen so far on the President’s proposal it looks to me to be well constructed. You mention 30 million who might see a modest tax increase (which they could avoid by choosing a lower cost plan) but fail to mention the 120 million who would get a tax decrease. The 30 million who might see an increase are largely members of big unions or government employees with gold plated health plans where the individual has no accountability or concern about costs since someone else is paying the tab.

This plan would be a powerful tool to transform health care and assure that the individual controls the choices and costs involved in their own health care, not government. My advice is get behind it or Arnold’s plan is going to look pretty good compared to what could be devised by a Democratic President and Congress in 2008.

I see health care to be an individual responsibility and not one provided by government. President Bush’s as Arnold’s plans to reform health care is government manipulation of private medicine. It is socialism.

If folks want insurance then they can get a job which provides it, purchase it or go “bare.”

The government’s responsibility should be to provide basic emergency care and care to protect the public from contagious disease.

Redistribution of wealth from people that are working and productive to third world immigrants who are here illegally is WRONG.

Where is the redistribution of wealth in the Bush proposal? Today those that do not work for employers and purchase health coverage on their own are subsidizing those with employer coverage. That is redistribution of wealth. The Bush proposal treats everyone the same (up to very generous limit of $7,500/$15,000). The Bush proposal puts more responsibility on the individual as you state you want to see. Government is not involved other than in the tax policy issue. However, that policy would actually be less redistributive than it is today.

I agree with you on illegal immigration. However, if they end up at the emergency room at my local hospital I am already paying for them so there is already a substantial redistribution going on that should not be tolerated.

    Where?

In proposing massive tax increases for folks that already have medical insurance.

People that purchase their own health coverage do this by choice. They can work for employers that provide health coverage or not. They can elect not to have health coverage.

Health Care is an individual responsibility not the governments. The United States medical system should be private with government paid vouchers for the truly indigent, old and poor.

Gaming the tax system and increasing taxes for the middle class is not the way to engender the GOP to voters.

    Leave the tax system alone.

Bush has failed on illegal immigration and until this issue is resolved health care reform cannot even be considered. The scandalous use of public monies and facilities by illegal aliens in California and other Western states is ridiculous.
